Something I've been needing to do for some time was to bump stop my rig.

After poking around on the Internet I found the best solution at GOJEEP!

Hockey pucks and metal tubing. Thanks to rguignard I have the square metal tubing and thanks to Sports Authority (http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3251162&cp=&sr=1&kw=hockey+pucks&origkw=hockey+pucks&parentPage=search) I now have hockey pucks!

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_b0ViaGso2Ko/TE7SQLiBbfI/AAAAAAAAAWo/eLXqGQJpEUA/s912/2010-07-26%2018.55.15.jpg

I purchased 12 hockey pucks from Sports Authority ONLINE for $25 shipped.

Reading the article on GOJEEP all I need to do is glue these hockey pucks in.
http://jeep-xj.info/Marks2003.jpg
:link: (http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoBumpstops.htm)

I noticed that Oreily's has spring compressors that you can borrow. So since I have a factory bump stop that has dropped into the coil, I already tried gluing it once, I'm going to remove the coil, fix that dropped bump stop. Paint the coils factory red and then install the hockey pucks. I'll have to look at it. I may have to reinstall the coil before I can install the pucks. I'd like to bolt that first puck to the base of the coil pad then glue the rest to it.

Keep watching this thread as I will post up things that I learned and pictures as this most recent Jeep project progresses.

Doing a little more searching this morning I found this old thread on NAXJA.org. I had forgot about this. So apparently bolting the pucks down will work.

Well I agree with GOJEEP assessment. It doesn't matter how much you lift, you need to bump stop. The tire is going to come into contact with the fender at some point. I guess you could trim so much fender that at full coil compression it wouldn't touch, but I've already trimmed a couple of inches off of mine.

Doing a little more research. I see that the upper front bump stops are available for the Jeep XJ.

These are for my year XJ. $27 for a pair.

xjtalk vendor JeepinOutfitters.com = :link: (http://jeepinoutfitters.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=180)

I found they are also available through Payless4x4 (http://www.payless4wheeldrive.com/) Call the number on their ad (http://xjtalk.com/images/special/payless4wheeldrivelogo1-animated3.gif) (800-945-4294) and ask for Mark.

Ya, I know I have to bump stop! Its just I gotta trim the fenders first, to figure out where lol. I have a bucket of 20-30 old Captain Morgan hockey pucks I will use :D

Also, your shocks will bottom out and damage them.

You mean without bump stopping, right?

4.3LXJ

You mean without bump stopping, right?

Yes. One of the things to factor in when bump stopping is shock travel. We usually fit shocks based on the extended length of the lifted suspension. The increased length of the new shocks also means there is increased length of the collapsed shock. To protect that shock, the bump stops need to be increased to keep the shock from bottoming out.

To add to what Steve said the one thign to always remember : You can hang from a shock and it wont hurt it if you colapse it , just once , you have already done damage to it.

Passenger's side complete, Driver's side complete.

It was a 12 hour day. About 2 hours of breaks and dinner.

Getting the coils off and on was easy. The time consuming stuff was using the dremel to take about 1/4 each all the way around the upper bump stop. Then cleaning the damn coil well enough to paint it.

I have about 4" of space between the upper bump stop and the top of the second hockey puck. I'll probably be removing some of the upper bump stop. I'll have to see how much the travel is limited.

looks really good, now you will never have to pay to have a lift installed just a little more and you would of done the whole lift. i have taken out and put back in coils like ten times and every time it still sucks, not hard to do but still sucks. nice work.

i need to bump stop as well to me it looks like just the longer isolator word work for me since i have alot of room in the wheel wells. let me know how it works out.

I dug around A LOT and found this rule of thumb...

For every 2 inches of increased tire diameter, you need 1 inch of bumpstop.

Which means I can probably safely remove the two hockey pucks. :o|

Just wanted to add, if the 2' is not enough you can get another 3" out of MJ rear bump stops. They look nice too.

Mudderoy
08-06-2010, 08:13 PM
Not sure if I mentioned it in this thread or not, but the rear bump stops may be a little lower than stock. They may be 1" longer since my XJ came with the UpCountry package. At any rate I had a rear bump stop fail today. I thought the piece of square tubing was about 12 inches long, when I finally got to the point where I was going to work on the rear bump stops, first thing I did was measure it. 10.75" long. That was enough to make one rear bump stop.

So I'll be trying to locate some more square tubing. Rene was going to look for another piece, failing that I'll go back to plan "A" and see if I can find some at Tractor Supply, etc...

You running sissy bars up front to? I mean sway bars? Just lean with it..

What about the rear? Nobody EVER think's about the rear bumpstops..

Travel is all about the down travel and limiting the up... Rear bumpstops are tricky if you have aftermarket Ubolts and havent cut the excess off... I have seen guys inboard them with 2x4 box steal.... would like to see some threads on that... (at the moment I have not done a search on here)... just throwing the Idea out there....

I have the front sway bar with disconnects. I haven't had a sissy bar since my spider bike when I was a kid.

The rear bump stop info (which I have not installed yet) is futher up in the thread.

im needing bumpstops for the front of mine. Those that went to Brazos with us noticed i broke my washer fluid resivour(sp) In the back i have 2x2 square tubing and a Rusty's extended bump stop.

In the front i kept putting hockey pucks and glueing them down, they kept popping off, so i would use different glue, i used what i thought was really good glue, i didnt skimp on that.

So now i am thinking about just getting the composite boltable(is that a word?) pucks that are 3 -4"s high.

Popping off? The come off and go through the coil spring? You are gluing them to the pad at the bottom of the coil right?

yeah i would clean the pad at the bottom then glue one on, then another then another, making sure they were nice and hard, when i would flex, the upper bump stop is not hitting it strait down, if you look they kind of point forward a tad. So that would hit the puck and i guess the force would move it, breaking the bond. Then i would loose the puck on the trail. :(

So i need to bolt them down. Or buy the plastic pucks with a bolt that is recessed.

My tires didn't hit because I clearenced the fender wells.
Buuuttt the Diff did. It punched right through my oil pan.
I got a pan from a stock Cherokee and it was dented also.
So I bought the Daystar extended Bumpstops. They weren't enough so I added a hockypuck. I drilled a 1/4" hole through the puck. Then used a hole saw that I think was about 1" dia. and cut into the puck the depth of a 3/8" bolt head and flat washer. I dug the rubber out and drilled an tappped where it was going to go. I then bolted the puck and silicolned it in.

I first tried 3M adhesive, then i had a friend that worked on cop cars to make crown vic's into well cop cars, and they would use a black silicone stuff on there lights to hold stuff down and i used that stuff and it still did not work.

Its always the driver side that spits them out, the passenger side i have no problem with.

I run 4 hockey pucks per side. I drilled 3/8 holes and used 3/8 bolts. On the top puck I also took a 1in drill bit and drilled down just enough so the bolt head would be counter sunk. Also drilled into the spring perch. Those things dont move at all.

When I did my lift my front bump stops pretty much fell out from being deteriorated and rotten, I shortly replaced them with hockey pucks and I'm happy with them. My rear bump stops are still a problem though, I extended the rear stock bump stops with 1 1/2" square stock but I'm still having issues with having too much travel to the point that they hit the fenders. Other that building plates on top of the axle or spending $80 for extended stops that put me at the same length as I have now are there any other options?:banghead:

I need to do this to my 97. I have some extended Daystars on order. I too was confused about this as no one states the diameter.

I'm horrible on bumpstops, I've never built any and just let the tires eat what gets in the way.. After awhile the problem fixes itself...LOL
