That's right, we've moved the old Dana 30, that broken 4.0L block and various other Cherokee parts out of the corner of the garage and make a little room for the Grand Cherokee folks! After all the Grands are technically REAL Jeeps. :D

The v8s have a dana44a in the rear usually and the trans. depend on whether you have a v8 or 4.0. the v8s have 44re(I think) and the 6's have a 42re trans. the I6 usually has a 242 or a 231 tc and the V8's have 247/249 tc. the dana 30 comes in the front of both. The 98 ZJ also came with a 5.9 as an option. The normal V8 is a 5.2. I think the 93 Grands came with the same trans. as a Cherokee, in 94 they changed trans. As far as I'm concerned this was a BIG mistake.

Isn't it true that the Dana 44 on the Grands are some of the worse axles made, like Dana 35 bad?

They have a aluminium center section and have a problem with pinion bearings from what I understand. Plus they have NO aftermarket support

Yep, that's what I read, the aluminium part. I was sad to hear that. Dana 44 on anything would be nice.

My buddy might be sad to hear that the d44 rear from a grand is junk! he swears up and down the v8 must have a stronger axle.

Well I don't know that they are junk. I mean the Dana 35 is widely believed to be a POS, but it is just right-sized engineered. It's fine for a stock vehicle. We just wouldn't want a Dana 44 from a Grand because it wouldn't perform for what many of us want it for, high torque use.
