So I've had this Jeep for about 8 months and haven't done anything major to it through this point. Tomorrow I'm installing a Donor motor from Kryptonite's old XJ(RIP). Also putting in his 3-4month used 3 core radiator. I will certainly have the camera around and will post up!

He's my new, Kryp's old, motor when I brought her home.
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad210/prcrawfo/abc.jpg

Thanks to Rene and Matt, the install will take place at a shop outside of the Conroe area( I think)

Other things I hope to get done tomorrow are a 3 inch BB, recharge the AC and fix a AC leak that is dripping on the passenger side floor and stinking up the jeep!

Wow... I forgot I started this thread. The engine swap took place but ended up taking the better part of 2 days mainly due to motor/tranny dowl pin issues amoung other issues. So Ive had the new motor in since 104k miles and its about 112k now. I've done several other things to it since July. I'll look through my camera and see if i got some pics to post up.

Well it runs great! This motor had 124k when I put it in mine. The motor itself I havent had any real issues with cept that the rear main seal is leaking a good amount. Things that I've done to it since July are:

3 inch BB- 3in blocks in rear and 3 inch spacers in the front
Removed rear sway bar
New upper and lower radiator hoses
New alternator
New oil pressure sending unit
New Temp gauge sending unit
New U-joint for rear shaft in front of the diff
Replaced cracked aftermarket exhaust manifold with new one thanks to warranty
New magnaflow high flow cat and O2 sensor
Flowmaster 40 series

Well last week I bought a front driveshaft to replace mine that had lots of play in the CV joint. I bought one from a JY from a 98 xj that they said was automatic. It looked right but tonight when i went to install it... I found out it is about a half inch too long. So i researched for a bit and found a link to this site.
http://www2.dana.com/pdf/J321-CV.PDF
Apparently this drive shaft is almost an inch and a half longer fully compressed. So I'm going to be headed back to the jy and see if they can find me one to swap out with.

Im also expecting my 4.5 X-series Rough Country lift to arrive tomorrow but looks like it will stay boxed up thil this coming weekend.

I am guessing you mean 98 XJ, not CJ... but from what I have heard, our front DS is just a tad bit longer... not real sure why... Sorry to hear that the lift didn't come in when you were hoping to get it... so that you guys could install it this past weekend.. I hope that you are able to get everyone together next weekend to install it, if it comes in this week..

Okay... TIME FOR LIFT PICS!! Or the first half of them I should say:cheerleader:

heres before starting
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad210/prcrawfo/lift1st.jpg

Removed the stock leaf and the 3 inch block I had in it... new 4.5 RC leaf in place but it seems like its too short
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad210/prcrawfo/lift2nd.jpg
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad210/prcrawfo/lift3rd.jpg

so with the vehicle lift and jack stand Rene and I tried to compress it so that it would flex to where the leaf eyes lined up... prob was the leaf was so stiff that it didnt flex and so we go to beating and made it line up

Here is the drivers side old leaf removed
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad210/prcrawfo/lift.jpg

Both leafs installed, Shocks and extended brake line(for 4-6inch lift...easily long enough!)
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad210/prcrawfo/lift2.jpg

And this is it on the ground... ran out of daylight and energy... The warmest it was when we were doing this was 26 degrees... so fingers were numb lol
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad210/prcrawfo/lift6th.jpg

Hopefully this weekend(time constraints considered) The front end will be lifted and I will have the front driveshaft from a PNP installed... Right now I drive it around and I call it the rat rod... Rene wants me to get some stickers for the fenders that say "VATO" :smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021:

Well Geo Fry had one posted up for sale and I went over by to pick it up earlier and also got a borla muffler for Matt. Lift installation will resume tomorrow and Saturday will have some much due WHEELING... Will take some pics tomorrow as well and Fireman Ray's son will prob have the camcorder for Creekside on Sat.

FYI after doing the coil removal about 30 times PRIOR to getting long arms... the best thing to do is unbolt the lower arms but do ONE side at a time... like undo the arm pull down on axle remove coil insert new coil re-attach arm... THEN do other sidemakes for lining things up easier

Well Ive got a new list of things to work on a fix so that I can make my Jeep road trip worthy... For MEXICO! Plan is to go to San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico.
Things to track down and repair/replace:
1. Noise from right rear axle... Makes a clicking rattle can noise. Most noticeable when making fast left turns
2. Transfer case leaks from the back side... Not sure where from or if it's just a seal/seals.
3. Water pump... it intermitenly squeals like I have a child under my hood...
4. Radiator... has a slight leak on the passenger side seam.
5. Front axle... Figure out what I broke. Think its the drivers side axle shaft
Maintainance...
I just pulled my pan last weekend to change my rear main seal. All looked well on the bottom side.
Things to do:
1. Replace Fluids, Rear Diff, Trans, T-case, Coolant
2. Replace spark plug wires and dist cap, CEL keeps tripping misfire 1, 5 and random cylinders(plugs were replaced about 8k miles ago)
3. Get some new rubber for the 1900 mile round trip

Is the differential leaking oil?? I dont think so... it is usually wet from being coated in t-case fluid since my t-case leaks a bit... The fill hole does usually have a bit of dampness around it... I changed all my fluids about 8-9 months ago i think it was

If you get it then with the tranny in neutral, then it is most likely a wheel bearing.

okay well I'll try throwing it into neutral next time I drive it.

Today i replaced spark plug wires with a 20 dollar set from Oreilly's that has a lifetime warrantee. CEL has remained off for about 90 miles since reconnecting the battery.

I remembered another thing to add to my repair/replace list. I need to warrantee and replace my year old front wheel bearings. Both seem to be shot and they have a 2 year warrantee from A1AUTO(one of our site vendors)

Thanks for the edit above Steve. lol
Well I went by the body shop and had a long discussion with him. The place is called Cillis Car Care. Off of Shroeder @ 249 in northwest Houston. My Grandfather has gone to this place for years. So I got to talking and heres what we came out with.
The car wash is footing the bill. Pretty much which ever body parts were damaged they are responsible for replacing/repairing. So I threw the idea, of the 97+ front end swap, out there and he said that's not a problem. He said he could get all the parts, but would need guidance from me to make sure he got what was necessary, OR I get the parts and bring them to them.
I told him I would source out the parts, And he'll reimburse me.

SOOOO I might just come out ahead in this thing:D

So obviously I'll need both fenders and front clip(including grill inserts etc.) What little things will have to be switched or can be reused?

Also. tonight Im gonna look at replacing my motor mounts that i got in last Saturday. Pics will come later :D

A few weeks back i replaced the rear sagging leaf packs with new ones. I also added a .5-1.5 in lift shackle to replace the factory worn-out ones. Here's the sagging pic that RC approved me for warranty based on.

My 96 XJ is currently sitting up at the shop until a rear driveshaft can be found to fit with the SYE Matt and I installed.
My 96 is a standard transmission so this requires the drive shaft to be longer than automatic driveshafts. the factory front from mine is about an inch and a half longer than automatic front ds's. My front drive shaft is about 1/4 inch too short when fully extended to be swapped to the rear

PN 9.9485R Energy Suspension
http://energysuspension.com/universal-products/link-flange-type-bushings-universal-mounts-isolators.html

These are the bushings that came in the x-flex 4-6 inch rough country lower control arm prior to about Jan 2012. They(rough country) redesigned the LCA's to take a clevite style bushing for the axle side and no longer offered replacements so they told me to measure the specs and call Energy Suspension.

Mine will arrive tomorrow so hopefully I can be back in the Jeep by this weekend.

So if you bought your lift from rough country prior to ~jan/2012 then your tie rod end part number is below.

I'm planning on figuring out a bracket I can add so that it ties into the unibody nut strips for extra strength

Well I attempted to get slap these in last week and sure enough the bushings i had were too big. After reading and researching for the dims of my control arm bushing with out measuring myself i was certain that I had the right PN. Well the info i got from another forum steered me wrong.

The CORRECT PN for this bushings is 9.9483R (or 9.9483G).

So anyways, I was so excited when i got the wrong ones i took a picture.

Checked the alignment, front was half inch closer than rear so adjusted it to just a lil bit under 1/4 inch.

when checking for play with the woman turning the wheel side to side, the was of course play in the track bar bushing. I tightened the bolt up for now but looks like the real solution will be to put a larger dia. bolt through it.

Cancer restore update:
Cut out the cancer, trimmed floorboards to fit painted and then riveted them in, I've had this ready to be welded but lack of time to get to my friend Matt's shop to weld them in so figured this was a sufficient substitute

Took 84 rivets on the larger patch, hopefully will have time to finish the smaller patch tomorrow, the prep the floorboards underneath for seam sealer.
Suggestions/tips on finishing this sort of project out are appreciated :D

Time to get back to work on my XJ.

I yanked my previous a-pillar lights wiring to start fresh and also run the wires for my roof rack mounted lights. I really don't want to drill through the roof to run up there and I'm too lazy to pull my a-pillar light mounts(PITA) so I'm left with routing the wires through to the rear of the jeep. I plan on dropping the three wires out beneath the drivers tail light and then up the outside of the hatch seal to get to the rear of the rack.

Anyone else run lights to their roof this way or have another suggestion?

Here's what I have for the job:

100 ft 12 ga wire
plenty of male/female crimp on connectors
3 30 amp standard relays
3 inline 20 amp fuses

I think that would pretty much cover it, short of soldering, but who has the time? What's the hesitation of drilling?

Just another place to leak, and I would have to deal with the dropping headliner too.

The sagging headliner was always a major annoyance in my 86. Was very happy after removing all of it. I figured it was already a noisy car, removing that wouldnt make much difference on sound, and I wasnt sure what other purpose it was still serving.

I bit the bullet and fixed my headliner a few weeks back, used about 50 push tacks, problem solved :D

Bought the replacement pan from rockauto and cut it to use on the sizes i needed. rivited it all in, used seam sealer top and bottom and around each rivet then por15 all of it.

For my roof rack lights, I routed 2 12 ga wires from my relays up front, through the cab to the driver side rear tail light. From there I added a common ground for the 4 lights, went out the bottom of the tail light opening and then up the door seal next to the hatch gasket and out near the hinge. I then snaked the wires through the factory roof rack rails up to the front of my aftermarket rack to each light. All lights splice into the ground and the center spots and outer floods each share their own +.
I plan on adding 3 disconnect plugs, one on each end of the factory rail, and one just inside the tail light housing. I also heat shrinked all connections outside the jeep then installed wire duct and used about two rolls of electrical tape for good measure.
Took me an evening and the better part of the next day but I'm happy with the result. Last thing I did was re-install my carpet and seats after a good vacuum. I don't know where to permanently mount the switches so for now they are draped in front of the shift boot.

You know they make LED light bars that will bolt right up to that rack? The 44" I have is like that, has four bolts, and the brackets are adjustable so you can line them up with the holes in the rack.

You're right, but these were a gift to me a couple years ago and thus only cost was my time to install and miscellaneous things for wiring them in. I'm frugal, I buy when its something that makes sense. I have not purchased any of the main components for any of the lights on my Jeep. Rack, gift. A-pillar brackets, contest prize. KC lights, free from a friend that upgraded. hellas, gift. I am very grateful to have all of it, but likely would not have purchased them myself at this point.

Oh I'm not saying you need to upgrade, just letting you know that they make LED light bars that will fit that mount. If you like what you got, that's great. I miss my nice KC lights. They say "off road" to me. Just hard to argue with 10 times the amount of light, for me.

Wow! I just realized that rack isn't white any more!

I agree with the kc/round lights "off-road" statement 100%.

I've had 3 or 4 people ask why I didn't get an led light bar instead in the last month.

And yes the rack got painted an appropriate color in January. My New track bar will also appropriately be painted red :D

Ohhh yes, I certainly remember that day, i was reminded of it just a couple months ago when I had the entire interior out and the water lines were visible on the inside. That pic there shows the highest water has been on my jeep. That hole was a b-itch, took two winches to butted up against a tree to pull me out.

Simple answer... maybe.

I have to get a new 45 torx, the 45 torx i have, well the bit is missing from the socket. I might have to chop off the front face on the factory mount part, but I do want to try to make it work because it adds another bolt further back on uni-body.

Yeah added pull points are always good to have, and having an extra mount bolt further back to spread out the load, is definitely a good thing to have...

I picked up some 1/4 inch angle iron yesterday to make some brackets for my tow bar brackets. While drilling the first 6 holes i wore out my 1/2 inch bit. So the last two will be finished up tonight after picking up a new bit. Ill post pics when its through, first time in a while I've actually made something specifically for use on my Jeep.

Here is a simple redition of what my brackets look like so that i can use the tow bar brackets. The bracket will mount to the bottom of the winch plate with 2 bolts going through the winch plate and then the two on the front of the angle iron to bolt the tow bar brackets on.

I do plan on buying the disconnecting plugs so that the winch can be removed to deter possible theft and also to allow it to be used on our Colorado or YJ.

Some re wiring is in order to clean up my battery terminals which I bought supplies for today.

Also order a 20k snatch block and cover for the winch.

Question on using the snatch block and connecting back to the XJ...

Is it safe to attach to anchor point with snatch block and then back the the shackle that can be seen in the above pictures?

just for fun, here's a pic of a tight squeeze in one of the University of Houston parking garages. Sign said 7' but I know my XJ is about 7'3" with the tire up top. However i didnt hit the clearance bar going in(I tried several lanes to make sure the first one wasnt just wrong.

That's easy to fix... you just air down a bit for the parking garage crawling!!! LOL... I'm guessing they need to re adjust their clearance bar... or the parking garage has settled a bit!!

As long as all that is strong enough, that is up to the pull of twice that of the winch, then yes
