Many many thanks to Detours (http://www.detoursusa.com) for taking the extra time to take all these pictures, transfer them to the computer, then e-mail them out. Truly above and beyond!!!

Recovery points if you don't love them you will.
The top of the bumper hasn't been notched yet.

http://muckleroy.com/images/bumper16.jpg
All the BIG bumper's "D" shackles are big. ;)

The other end of the recovery point.

Ok plates all in. Top is notched. This thing is getting close.

You think this is a lot of pictures, wait until I get the bumper, paint it and install it on my Jeep! :lolsign:

Yep yep, Superwinch EP i 9.0 Winch.

http://superwinch.com/UserFiles/Image/epi9LG.jpg

http://superwinch.com/EPi9_9_000_lbs.html

I was looking at various brands, not knowing ANYTHING about winches. Mark at Detours recommend the Superwinch, so I read a few things about them and decided that was the way I was going to go. The bumper is actually built for this winch and model. Others may fit, but Mark asked which winch I was going to use prior to building the bumper.

BlueXJ

Yeah I liked the design but went with MileMarker as they had a bigger winch for a cheaper price and I think a bigger winch may be needed in the gumbo mud I have experienced.

Isn't milemarker very good just slower than Warn and Superwinch?

Isn't milemarker very good just slower than Warn and Superwinch?

Yeah it is slower but the reason I bought it is that it doesn't overheat. My buddies with Warns down here have very fast winches but they have to stop on heavy or extended winching because you could fry eggs on theirs and mine is barely warm.
I have no first hand experience with Smittybuilts or Superwinches winches. Sry!!

DETOURS

EEEEEK!!
Smittybuilt should'nt be in the same sentence as Super_______, while I've heard decent things about the Smitty.....it is a 'direct from China' import with just whats now a 'brandname' of Smittybuilt on it......;)

DETOURS
03-15-2009, 06:52 PM
I've owned a Warn 8274 & 3 various Supewinches, my current winch is
an EPi-9000, very happy with it.

Warn and Superwinch are some of the best, although you're paying an additional percentage for
the Warn name. I consider a winch a tool, you should attempt to buy the best tools you can
afford, it cuts down on the busted knuckles...

I am just having so much fun with this 4x4. I just loved my truck when I had it years ago, but I never did so much to a vehicle as I have done to this one.

I get to "play" with it almost everyday, and with the Internet I have the ability to learn so much more than I would have otherwise.

It is great fun interacting with people that enjoy the XJs as well. I see XJs around the Houston area, but I never see a lifted one.

So yes alone time with the XJ is very much a good thing.

I heard four rumors today related to my bumper.

1. The center hoop is on
2. Someone saw the bumper in the Detours shop (without the hoop) and thought that the bumper was shipped to Detours to have the hoop installed. :smiley-laughing021:
3. I should have a new picture of the bumper today.
4. Everything should be completed this week and the bumper shipped next.

Mark; Do you think I have enough room on the side hoops for lights? It looks pretty close. Looks like the light tabs may have to be pretty close to where the side tubes meet the center hoop? Which is fine with me, if you think it makes sense. BTW, I can see that the tube size you used for the bumper actually "fits" the bump better than my drawing. Those tubes were too small.

Yes, still some odds & ends to button up, I need to do the tabs yet for the lights, and Tony...I think they'll be fine as far as fit goes.

It's been a strange week, temps in the mid 40's most of the days, humidity at 90-100 percent, lots of rain/showers......it all means that our primers have'nt been curing effectively, this slows down packaging and shipping, which in return causes frustration. Why am I mentioning this? It's crazy to think things like temp & humidity can totally bottle kneck production and projected time frames, but it does.

Still looking to ship late this week if at all possible.

Good news on the lights. It looked like it was close from the picture. That center hoop is so wide I think I can get 3 lights on there! I'm going to hate hanging a license plate on the front of my work of art.

Honestly, it would require a seperate building or section of building to create a true climate controlled area......unless you own the electric or fuel company, very few welding/fabrication shops (at the level Im at or most others as well..) are climate controlled. I'd need an addition dedicated to final clean-up/spray & cure......($$$$$$)

Ok another dumb question. What does sandblasting do? Just make it all smooth like sanding a project in wood shop?

firehawk
03-31-2009, 03:24 PM
Sandblasting is blowing sand or some other media/abrasive out of a nozzle using high air pressure. It will strip anything off, INCLUDING SKIN, leaving a sort of matte finish on metal. Depending on what you use to blast with, sand, glass beads, even dry ice, will determine how smooth of a finish you end up with.

I guess if I wanted to secure my new winch I could put a spot weld on one or more of the nuts?

Is there any reason to put a cover on a winch?

I'm no winch expert but mine mounted with 4 square nuts that fit in a slot of sorts in the winch frame. It bolted up from the bottom. I guess I kinda assumed all winches mounted the same.

DETOURS

They pretty much do mount the same. (not so for the Warn 8274)

Tack a single bolt from the underside to the bumper, done as far
as security goes.

Thats a good price, bring it to 4WD.com 's attention, they may
match it and you'll have better warranty protection over amazon.
(only cuzz they're in the business, and I doubt you'll need the warranty)

Covers will promote longevity, no matter what brand.

Oh and the induction cowl hood I'm going to get. Money Money Money.

Mark says... I think we're right around 68-73lbs......not positive yet.

If this figure holds, winch and bumper will add about 150 lbs to the nose. I'll be removing the front factory skid and factory bumper, so maybe 30 lbs, with a delta of 120 lbs.

Mudd....that factory skids 'gotta' go, save the front bolts which connect it to the front crossmember, the bumper will tie into this area as discussed.

Personally......I'd consider Plasticoat bedliner spray, it's been re-formulated and is really a nice product in 'rattle can form'.......very black, nice fine texture, and a nice rubbery feel to the cured surface.

Pick up a can and atleast check it out. (NAPA/Walmart/AutoZone- $7.95)

If you later have it painted red, consider who's ever going to paint it will most likely want to start with a freshly sandblasted surface.

Mudderoy, If you want to paint it your self you should try www.paintscratch.com. You can order your specific Red for your year. It runs about 25 bucks a can. This is what I did, cost was about $80. Yeah I'd love to be able to paint it myself. I'd paint the parts as I got them. You may have seen my post on my accident a fews years ago. I had to have the rear driver's quarter panel re-skinned, and painted. The guy that did it told me that red is very difficult to match.

He did a very good job matching the paint, so naturally I wanted him to paint the parts. We agreed that it would be too time consuming having him paint the parts as I got them so he suggested that I get everything then come see him.

Yeah I do too, but the only way I think I could maintain it would be to paint it myself, then repaint it as needed. With the black paint I really don't have to worry about scuffing the paint.

I'm going to try that paint that Mark suggested. I like the idea of the rubberized feel to it.

$7.47 at Wal-Mart. I got 3 cans.

I think I e-mailed you this, not sure if you read it yet. There were 3 places on the bumper that were marked by shipping. One was on the passenger side recovery point, one on the main hoop, and one on the passenger side bumper edge. The mark was where the paint was mashed and rubbed off.

The frame connection points seem to be straight which is what I would have expected to see some damage on.

All in all I'd say the bumper made a very good trip from your to mine. Certainly nothing they did to the bumper was anything that paint couldn't fix.

I'm waiting for some pictures from 'beyond' the driveway........how does it feel driving? Noticable?

I was going to go this evening, but it got dark while I was washing her.

I may try to go tomorrow after work. That barn is about 5 minutes from the house.

No I don't notice anything different in how it handles. I just see little of the yellow tops KC lights. If I didn't see that the experience would be the same as driving it before. We'll see if that changes when I get the winch on there.

:rant:New to XJTALK but have watched Mudderoy's build up for a while. I once said his was the prettiest XJ I've seen. He broke my heart when he started adding black (Bushwackers). I really liked how clean it was because I don't like chopped up tin can XJs.

So my knee jerk reaction was to vote for a red bumper. However, I think with diamond plating red wouldn't look right. Go black with the bumper, go red with the BWs. Stick with three KCs, send the rest back. Buy the way, Harbor Freight made some awesome 5" driving lights that look just like the KCs and have a MUCH wider spread for trail work. Best buy in trail lighting, period.

BTW, I just got my new winch bumper from Logan's Metals. I can wait to put it on. Now I'm struggling with what winch to buy (money's an issue).

See ya.

Since I have removed the light weight OEM bumper mount and replaced it with the STOUT Detours mount, do I need to get a steering box brace?

I have never felt the need for one but if you are going places like Katemcy Rocks then you may need one.
