I can tell from the squeaking that it is coming close to the time to replace the pads on the front. I priced some rotors at O'Reily. $19 and $48. I thought if I'm going to pay $48 for a rotor maybe I should check to see if there is a better rotor out there that would stop better.

Any ideas?

Oh the NTB guy said I might want to change out the calipers.

Unless the caliper pistons are froze no need to change them. Clean the bolts and slides and lube them. Get a decent set of rotors and some ceramic pads.

I was going to recommend semi-metallic pads. I've had ceramics on my XJ and swapped them out because they were so loud (constantly squeaking), and the semi-metallics are much quieter. Now my blue one came with the damn ceramic pads (almost new none-the-less) and I'm going to have to change them out because I can't stand the squeaking anymore.

I told him the xj used to pull to the right during hard braking, after the lift and larger tires, it pulls to the left. This is only slightly, but I notice it. That is when he said replace the calipers.

So just a standard set of rotors? Should I go cheap and get the $19 ones?

Dude pony up the cash and get some powerstop rotors and hawk brake pads. You will pat yourself on the back with that purchase. I upgraded to 33's on my wrangler and nearly crashed coming down this 3 mile hill on the way back from the trails. My brakes overheated and yeah, the cheapo brakes we get at the parts store. They just weren't up to the task. I put on some powerstop rotors and hawk pads and they never let me down. The stopping power of the set is well worth the cash. I was lucky and found them both on ebay for $100 but now they go for around $300 total, a very WORTHY $300. ;)

My advice to everyone, don't go cheap when it comes to stopping a vehicle that you invested $1000's into, and also for the sake of other people's safety. I learned my lesson almost wrecking into the back of my buddy's YJ going 40 mph.

If you are running stock size tires or somewhat around that size, the cheapo's can get you by but once you go larger, don't settle for the cheap stuff.

I understand and agree, but you have to go with what you can afford. I guess I should have bought brakes instead of my fancy front bumper.

Thanks for the name brands. I'll have the information when I can afford them.

I understand $$ is a concern.

The kit from summit isn't too bad. Do they squeak? When you have to do the break job again, you take these off and replace them with another kit?

Pop off old, pop in new. Just like your bumper :) You have to run a "break in" procedure for the pads/rotors but they normally send directions on how to. I can't help you with the squeak or not cuz i can't hear but i replaced these on my screeching factory rotors and my buddy said they don't make noise.

One thing to remember the rotors you use on a 91-98 XJ is different then what you use on a 99-01 XJ. 91-98 use a composite style where as 99+ use a cast style. on 91-98 you can not use the cast style with the OEM hubs.

What is this squeaking of ceramic pads? only if you lightly touch the pedal. They are for stopping! Coasting is for Roller Coasters! Mash dem dere brakes eh!
I have them on the xj and the bus (Expedition) no squeaks, minimal dust and good stopping. I get the ceramic ones from AZ and call it good. I didn't notice what year you have but maybe you'd better measure the "hat" on the rotor because in 99 (iirc) they changed the height of the hub and thus the hat on the rotor too.
Calipers are plenty cheap, AZ sells them for $21 plus core, worth it to make sure every thing is ok if you have a problem. I have two spares around right now so I can dump one and still have a spare.
