We have just aquired a 2.5l rwd 2-door xj (94). We cannot open the driver door, so I was hoping I could get this info from you guys. What is the GVWR for said cherokee? We need to move a chevy engine and wanted to know if it would get the job done. Thx in advance.

You can put it in the back. It will squat though. It is not a pickup, but it will handle it. The door thing will have to be taken care of by taking the panel off the door and operating the mechanism manually. The handles and all come off with a phillips screw driver and the panel is held on by plastic fasteners that you can pull out gently. The top is held in by hooking over the edge. Good Luck

Thx for the quick response. Our door is pinned in at the a-pillar, so I hope that the pillar isn't messed up by the door.

Has this been hit?

By the way, welcome to XJ Talk

Yup, previous owner abused this truck, but aside from replacing a few things, it will be great. It is a replacing our fwd Patriot, which is a pretty decent little truck, but payments suck. Lol

Plus, we would rather have something with a little better ground clearance..and rwd. :D

On my two door the hinges are going bad and letting the door drop causing the latch to be misaligned. I have to push in and pick up on my door while holding the button to get it open. Hope this is all it is.

That is the case with the passenger door, typical door-sag, but the driver door needs to be taken apart to remove it. I will post pics later.

There are shims under the hinge where it bolts on the door. Just get some more and insert them under the bottom hinge until it lines up properly. They are easily obtained at a junk yard.

Picture of the driver front door.. this thing will not open.. without force or someone taking apart the door. The bottom one shows it's current "mostly open" state. This is as far as it will go. (where it's actually stuck at, it won't close further either) It's actually pinned on the a-pillar.

My first suggestion is that you could use a new door. You could always rent a porta power and push the door out that way after working the the mechanism. I think that wold be the bet route.

One last question; we want to get a tach.. are the stock ones interchangable between the sport model [found on ebay.. and maybe in junkyards]

Yes they are. You change out the whole cluster. You will however have to change the oil pressure sending unit for sure. It is just plug and play.

Make sure it comes from a 4 cylinder XJ if that is what I remember you have.

suzq044 please update your details. This way people will be able to tell the details of your rig. Really helps out when you ask technical questions.

You can go here (http://www.xjtalk.com/profile.php?do=editprofile) :link: (http://www.xjtalk.com/profile.php?do=editprofile). If you have any questions please feel free to PM me or one of the moderators.

Yup, it is a 4banger. Although I am not sure why it would matter if it was from a 6cyl or 4cyl engine? Engine speed is engine speed, right?

As for the details of my jeep; its a real pita, cause I can only use my Droid to go on the forums, because my browser/pc is a piece. It takes forever for the forums to load on it. But the galleries are just fine. Its weird, only some forums do it. Its incredibly slow typing on my Droid; its sometimes a pita to click links on it when they're close together... long story-short. I put the info on the first post anyways.

The tack registers how many times a coil fires a spark plug. So if you use a six cylinder tach on a 4 banger the tach will only register 66 % of the true engine speed.

Well, we found a clunkered 2.5 with a tach yesterday out of an 89 I believe. It should still plug and play right? I ask because the idiot lights are replaced by gauges in this cluster.

it is plug and play. But you will need the oil pressure sensor for that year to work correctly

exactly that is why an aftermarket tach has a switch to go from 4-6-8 if it isnt set right it wont read right.

and the oil pressure sensor there are a couple kinds one that just sends a signal to a light when the pressure is low and one that actually sends a signal to a guage to read the pressure - there are also mechanical, which you actually have to have a small oil line going from the sensor to the guage and electronic which sends the signal. Both work fine but electronic is way more expensive.

Cool. Thx for the info. Again.

In the long run we were thinking of making it Subaru-powered, drivetrain and all. Mostly because this xj will be the driver, while my FSj cherokee is going to be the desert truck. Just wanted to know what you thought about the Jeeparu idea..thx.

Again, it would be relegated to street duties mostly. The fact that it is at least double the power, and the xj is a few hundred lbs lighter makes it more intriguing.

I have done a subaru conversion. It is not one I would recommend. Your steering sector shaft will end up going through the head. Also, unless you use an old transaxle, you cannot have a full lock up on 4WD. You might find after measuring the engine will be in the grill if you want to have the front wheels in the normal position.

We are basically only keeping the jeep shell, and pretty much everything else will be STi. We considered Audi quattro due to diesel availability, but a subie has a lot less expense in the long run.

It will be at least a year before we start that project. We are still working on a fullsize cherokee, and a 66 c10 panel truck too. And we have just started those.

I will be doing something similar, but not in an XJ. I have a couple of better rigs for that conversion, one of which has already had a Subie in it. And like you, it will be an EJ 55 or 57 engine.

Was also thinking about using the new cosworth sti, because they will be old enough to buy used by the time we are ready for it..

Looks like we will be selling it before starting any of the big plans. We got an offer we couldn't refuse with a 67 Gladiator. We are hopefully picking it up this week. It hasn't been used for a long time, but we are excited about it. After all, its not every day you can pick up a free complete truck.

I am guessing you mean Max [our gladiator]? Not the best photos, but here he is. That is NOT patina, but about 6 layers of paint over the years.

It's an AMC 327, 4x4, 4spd manual; a '67 as mentioned, so no smog..ever. GoJeep! His name is Maximus, as in the Gladiator :D
