View Full Version : Oil Pressure Problem

I've owned my JX for 8 months. Original 4.0 130,000 miles. The oil pressure was normally at 40 psi during idle and high way speeds (it never climbed above 50 psi). In the last two weeks I've noticed the oil pressure sits at 60 psi and climbs to 80 psi frequently during normal driving. After it hits 80 psi, I let off the gas and it falls back to 60 psi. I changed the oil after the first time it climbed to 80 psi. The oil seemed normal in color and it was not low. Is there any danger with the psi getting to 80? If so any thoughts on fixing the problem?

Check your sending unit. May be a bad or dirty connection.

X2. But also 80 psi is not bad. Good oil pressure is good. My Chevys will run that on start up and drop down to 60 after warm up.

Where would the oil sending unit be located?

I found it, it's near the oil filter.

Yeah the older ones were screwed into the filter housing itself.

Should I get an OEM or aftermarket?

First did you find a loose connection or a dirty connection? If not then that may not be the culprit.

The one on my XJ is connected to the Oil filter housing. Everything is tight and clean.

Is there a point I should worry about pressure being to high?

My 93 runs at 40 at an idle, but runs at 60-70 when at highway speeds, and I have a brand new oil pressure sending unit. Not that this helps, but just thought I'd mention it

Somewhere I read that high oil pressure can wash out a bearing but I have never seen that phenomenon.

Generally it is considered that at pressures above 100 psi and very high rpms, like 8,000 that oil can get under the rod bearings instead of on top and cause them to spin inside the rod. But a 4.0 isn't going to turn that high anyway.

I know mine isn't maybe if it was a Toyota with the mysterious sticking gas pedal.

If a stock 4.0 could make those kinds of revs, it would probably be all over the county.

Thanks for everyones input. I think something in my engine changed about two weeks ago when the oil pressure started to rise but if it's not going to hurt anything then I'm going to leave it alone.

lol, I think the lifter springs would limit the RPM before it got to 10k.

I had the same issue after I changed my oil. I went to a NAPA Gold Filter from a Fram and I went from 40psi to 70psi on the interstate. Kinda worried me for a lil bit to.

Napa Gold 1085 is what I use. Now that I know there is another option when I do my next oil change.

Thanks!

I'm planning on changing my oil this weekend. I'm going to try and find one of these over sided filters myself.

I used Purolator last time. Oil pressure was the same as the Fram.
