I have sent out an e-mail to all members with this dismal news.

We found out today that to upgrade to a better and much faster Internet we xjtalk could be down up to 6 days. Best case it may only be a few hours on January 19th. No one was able to say exactly.

The current service may be terminated at any time. The new service should be in place this coming Tuesday (Jan. 19th) but you may not be able to get to the servers for several days as DNS gets updated around the world.

DNS basically converts the web address you type in www.xjtalk.com to a numeric address. Since we will be getting NEW numeric addresses the DNS much change and all the DNS servers around the world will have to be updated.

This is an automatic process and the time it takes is dependent on how each DNS server is configured.

The DNS (Domain Name Server) server you use to translate www.xjtalk.com into a numeric addres (IP address) may update quickly and your outage may be very short, there is just no way to know for sure.

Every member is very important to us and we tried numerous ways to make this a transparent transition, however short of spending a few hundred dollars we are unable to accomplish this.

This is a hobby site that is run without membership fees, or charge to our vendors. Unfortunately this also means that when we make changes there are potential outages like this so we can keep the costs down.

*** The actual GOOD news is that your access to the xjtalk servers should be about twice as fast once service is restored!

The quoted time for DNS to propagate is 72 hours. Anything short of that is gravy. I was real happy to see people on last night at 8pm.

Have you noticed a speed increase?

AT&T is dragging their feet in getting the reverse DNS forwarding set up. You may not be receiving e-mails from xjtalk until they do. This also means you may get a flood of e-mails from xjtalk once it is working.

It appears that many more ISPs are checking reverse DNS that they did 5 years ago. They do this to help determine if the e-mail is legitiment or spam.

SON OF A BITCH! :mad0090: :mad0090: :mad0090:

So AT&T got the reverse DSL stuff working, but the e-mail just sits there.

A little more checking and I found out that AT&T BY DEFAULT BLOCK all out going e-mail from their customers!!!

It took 6 calls and 2 days to get the DNS thing fixed. It took on 15 minute call to get the e-mail unblocked.

So the MASS of e-mails you are receiving now (possibly) is AT&T's fault.

But it is working... :patriot:

P.S. If you are a AOL e-mail user it may be another 24 to 48 hours before your resume receiving e-mails from xjtalk.

Big problem is the fact that AT&T is involved. They and AOL have always seemed to have more red tape than any other choices out there.
