View Full Version : Locked keys in Jeep

I go through a series of predefined steps prior to getting out of my Jeep. Yesterday that series of steps wasn't followed and I locked my keys inside.

I called my wife and she came to unlock the Jeep, have lunch and look around the office. Worked out well, but I still don't like having my keys locked in my Jeep. This happens maybe once a year.

I had a key made up that I could "hide" somewhere on the Jeep. I know about the little magnetic box but that is pretty common. I have also heard about wrapping the key around some cables in black tap. A couple of mud puddles later it looks like all the rest of the cables.

I have also heard the one about leaving a key in your wallet. But lose the wallet then you are nervous about losing your Jeep!

I'd prefer some other alternatives to these three.

Any ideas?

I have installed emergency switches for the keyless entry. You just hide the button some where and when locked out you just push the button and the door unlocks. If you don't have power door locks just install a actuator in one door.

I was thinking of this yesterday. Do you just have the one switch? I was thinking of setting it up like a nuclear launch sequence! You know two switches to be pressed at the same time, but they are too far apart for one person to reach both? :rotfl2:

Actually the switch is a pretty good idea because that would get you into the Jeep but wouldn't start it, where as a hidden key is full access plus you can take the Jeep.

Get a coded key pad where you have a 4 digit to enter. Most of the time we put these on the starter circuit so you have to enter the code in order to start the vehicle. I have been known to install these to control electronic equipment.

I have the best way to get into my Jeep after locking my keys into it, I have been locking my keys in my Jeep every friday like clock work for years

Here is my keys locked in my Jeep

Okay step one is to replace the original wing window with one that does not lock, (Mine came with this added feature when I bought it) It looks original so as to fool the would be Jeep snatchers

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww305/melreese83/HPIM0504.jpg

Step two is when you need to get into your locked Jeep, turn the outer tab located on the outside of your wing window counter clockwise

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww305/melreese83/HPIM0505.jpg

Step three is to push open your wing window, reach in and hit the unlock button in your jeep

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww305/melreese83/HPIM0506.jpg

Step four, yup almost done, open your door and retrieve your keys from your now unlocked Jeep, this works everytime!!

I have a habit of loading my pockets when I get dressed in the morning. One of the many things I carry (Hold over from my motorcycle only phase) is a small Craftsman crescent wrench and attached to it by a motorcycle master link is the door key to the Jeep and a spare for my house. So, if I have my pants on, I have a door key to either.

Drill a tiny 1/16" hole up near the rear shock mount. Use a key ring and attach the key to the hole. No one's gonna be lookin for a key there. That's where my key was on my TJ. Duct taping the key to one of the lines along the inside of the frame rail works well too.

You can get a credit card key, try'er plastic, about as thick as a credit card, the key flips out of the card area.

I just went through an ordeal with my work van yesterday. The so called locksmith took 2 hours to get it open. I will be reinstating a trick I have done on previous vehicles. I take a spare key and use a zip tie to secure it under the vehicle. Usually placed where it is not visible, yet easily accessed without having to crawl under the vehicle (don't want to roll around on the wet ground when it rains). If a lockout occurs, simply reach under and twist the key and break the zip tie.

Me too. But I thought I'd include it just in case. I know we like pics, and love videos, so it couldn't hurt.

With my luck it would be raining and the Jeep would be sitting in 6" of water!!!

Wow I could go on all day with this one (I'm a locksmith)
Prolly my fav is remove a screw from either license plate and sandwitch a key between the plate and bumper by driving the screw through the key ring hole.
Another cool way is to buy a hitch safe.

What's your opinion about the tennis ball trick?

I used to work for CAA - same as AAA but in Canada.
1. There is an import from the 80's that if you tap it with your fist above the lock it opens. THe tow truck driver gets your 60.00 before he does it.
2. Slim jims do not work on Toyota Supras. You have to break a window to get in if you lock it.

I have not locked my self outside a car since 1995 with a 1994 Mustand at a car wash in Seattle - they had the door open in 10 seconds - with a slim jim. Incredible.
