View Full Version : Cheap Tricks for a better Jeep

I've read a couple different threads about cheap (and often easy) ways to get more out of your Jeep. I pulled this link off of another thread (http://www.olypen.com/craigh/charge.htm); it relates to the electrical connections between your alternator, battery and chassis being switched out to increase your Jeep's electrical power output.
I've also read a lot about using oversized oil filters that are a direct swap to increase filtering ability, oil volume and ultimately oil life.

I'm looking to see what other quick fixes exist that don't cost too much money but can be an easy way to make modest improvements to your rig. What other things like this are out there?

heavy duty headlight harness from LMC Truck for the XJ(part#36-3580) $29.95 or around$40.00 shipped to your door. I have installed 3 and am waiting for my daughter to comehome for x-mas to do#4. If you go to Cherokee forum.com under XJ write ups you can find pics of it. This is were I got the idea. installation time is about 30 minutes.

Does that actually fit in the stock location for the headlights?

left headlight fits into the new harness. old plug not used. right headlight fits into a new plug. old headlight plug fits into new harness plug. two relay are affixed to the firewall and the two hot leads get attached to the B+. you have to also drill 2 new holes behind the headlights for the two new ground wires. the harness was run behind the grill. the other thing i did(for cosmetic purposes) was use balck electrician's tape over the yellow plastic that covers most of the harness.everything is clearly marked on the harness.

tire pressure. My local NAPA store does not have them anymore but they had valve stem caps in different psi ratings. when the tire was up to proper psi the end of the cap was green. if you lost some psi,it would show yellow, and if really low, it would change to red. I bought 6 sets, mainly for the kids to have them because they were poor at watching their tire pressure. At a cost of approx $10.00 for a set of 4, I thought them a worthwhile purchase.

One thing that I think is good is replacing your fusible links with circuit breakers. That way if there is a problem, it may not leave you stranded. They will just reset themselves.

I think that is a great idea. I have a few fusible links in my onboard toolbox but the circuit breaker is a much better idea.

One of these days I was going to do a write up on that, but my engine compartment is getting so crowded you might not be able to tell what I was doing.

I know a bunch of people have done home brew snokels as well as hood vents. Both of these can be very cheap. Any other ideas out there?

Wrangler fender flares give you a little more coverage and bigger wheel openings. They can be found at the junkyard cheap and have the sweet little blinkers on th front.:D

I run a full sized ford oil filter on my 91. its about 1/2 qt bigger. motorcraft FL1-A is the one I'm using. It needs the newer style adaptor to work, most rigs should have it already just look for the yellow adaptor sticker on the firewall.

Not a new trick but a good one.

I guess you've already changed the adapter but I found out about this from a post here....

The left is the normal sized filter, the right is the over sized. Nothing to change, just add the new larger filter.

Many years ago when I was learning to fly, my flight instructor told me to make a slow turn to the right. I started turning to the left. We laughed about it, but then I told him. Seriously if it's really important that I turn left or right you need to POINT! You can say it but POINT as well. :rotfl2:

Does dyslexic directions come from being around too many engineers?
