On the front of my 1990 cherokee/wagoneer there is a large black canister (kinda looks like a big pill capsule). It has thre or four vacuum(?) lines going into it. I think it was origionally mounted either in the front passengers side fender or behind the bumper. What is it for and can i remove it with out problems. Or bypass it?
I have modified the fenders and put on my own bumper and it is really in the way and at serious risk of being taken off on the trail. any help is appreciated.

you can relocate this to the engine bay but you do need this it is what controls the heater with out this the heater will not blow.

I managed to tack a couple of the lines into the engine bay and one goes to the heater and the other I'm pretty sure goes to the cruise control. Is there anyway to bypass or reroute the line for the heater to a place on the motor or another area? Cruise control doesnt work anyways and I could care less if it ever did. I dont have room under my hood to relocate that giant plastic pod, that I havn't already made a use for. I tried to upload a photo but they were all to big for the forum size so iI will try and take a smaller one tomorrow and put it up. Thanks for the help:thumbsup:

thats the vacume canister it controlls all the vacuum on your jeep, It originally was mounted in the front bumper of the Jeep. you really want to keep it and relocate it as the Jeep needs the vacuum reserve. I moved mine to on top of the electronic control center, drilled a couple holes and zip tied it on.

I guess I gotta kep it if its for all the vacuum. I dont have room for it in the engine bay (on-board air set up is in the location you mentioned). Is it going to affect anything to lengthen the lines out so I can move it?

That is the vacuum reservoir then. It does have a purpose. When you mash the skinny pedal, you have no vacuum. The reservoir stores vacuum so your heater and or AC continue to function at whatever you selected. Without the reservoir, every time you hit the skinny pedal it will go to defrost and when you let off it will go back to what you selected. Your choice.

Thanks everyone for the help. Its going to get relocated to a nice safe place somewhere. I live in maine no heater or poor functioning heater is not an option.

Well I have tried several times to upload a picture of the canister in question to this thread with no success. Its in my online album on here but thats all I can seem to do.Was worth a shot. If anyone can get it in here that would be great.

If you have a 231 transfercase then you have a disconnect front axle too and it needs the vacuum canister's stored vacuum to continue working. It is not a good thing to have it disconnect everytime you hit the skinny pedal, which it will do without the canister.
