View Full Version : JK D44 swap

I finally made a decision and instead of building a bullet proof D30 I'm just going to swap the JK axles into the xj. It made it to California and back but just barely and the Rubicon ate alot of stock stuff in steering and drivetrain. Next summer I'll be ready... Since the axles are 5 inches wider I have to run stock offset JK wheels to keep the tires somewhat under the jeep, so I found some Hardrock wheels and ordered some 35/ 12.50 / 17 BFG mud terrain KM2's and with some adapters bolted them on. Not sure I dig them but I'm stuck with them now.

Came up with enough Hardrock wheels to make the camper match, Lot's of work starting over, but I'm Hoping it will last and hold up to multiple cross country trips. I'm wanting to go to Easter Jeep in the spring.

Artec truss makes a truss that swaps a JK to xj, I'm hoping it makes it as easy as they say. Plus strengthen the D44 were they are weak... Artec said it would take 2 weeks but the truss showed up at the door in 5 day's... Sweet...

Since my xj had new 456 gears, rear locker and 35's I had to build another xj for my brother to put everything under... Quarter panel fold, big cut and box tubing rockers...

That does kind of give it a stock look, different but not bad. So, are you planning on bringing your brother next time?

jonb8

Yea he say's he's coming, but who knows... I know I'm coming and hopefully not have all the issue's I had last time.

Don't feel lonely, I had issues too last time out. Time for a new engine. Ran into a guy from Calgary with a nice Willys wagon with a 44 front that blew a hub and axle. Made for a short weekend for him too.

Sure was. Didn't see him, but his partner said he knew of you. Said he went up against you on the ramp. The Willys had a Scout front 44. Same as I am working with on mine. And running the same tires I want. Makes me wonder. Of course he did the damage on the nastiest winch hill on Fordyce.

The XJ and camper are looking good.. and that is a nice selection of wheel & tires you got for them, and having spares.. will certainly be nice for hitting the road & trails.. Can't say you're brother didn't get a hookup on the XJ build... Wish I had been lucky like that.. lol.. Look forward to seeing the JK44's under the XJ.. and the brother's build up...

He's out wheeling it already, him and some buddies went out on a overnight this weekend... Jeep came out good...

Some more parts for the xj showed up, I think I'm about ready to get to work, I have been doing some mockup work on putting the winch behind the bumper. I gotta get the winch out from in front of the grill and clean up airflow.. Not sure how well the xj will stay cool out west pulling the teardrop...

You're right Jon, keeping it cool over the passes with a load is a problem. I think most of it is the design of that long short radiator. Something more square seems to do much better, such as a 4.0 in a ZJ

jonb8
10-14-2017, 02:13 PM
I've got the cooling system all new and working perfect, Im hoping that'll be enough, might have to just wait for night time on real hot days for long pulls. It doesn't overheat pulling the teardrop in the WV mountains but it's alot hotter and higher out your way...

4.3LXJ
10-14-2017, 09:27 PM
I hear ya. These mountains will test the best cooling systems. I was reading about the "MB" Jeep from Petersons overheating badly last summer on Ultimate Adventure. Big horsepower under that hood, but still, slowed them down

jonb8
10-17-2017, 05:22 AM
The Artec rear truss made it in yesterday, it looks alot easier to install then the front... LOL The rear truss is alittle overkill probably but I didn't think it could hurt....

Looking good... Yeah I have synthetic line on my winch as well as Factor 55 ProLink... Hate the cost of the Prolink... but do like using it much better than standard hook... The few times I've made use o it, has certainly had me much more confident while using it...

The black Hardrocks look way better than just the plan jane silver... That bumper is definitely good looking... You still running the stock airbox, or have you already gone to a cowl or some other intake format?? If you're not running the stock airbox you could mount the control box for the winch in that area..

I'm going to change up the traveling/jeeping/camping setup. Were going to need something bigger to go out farther and stay longer. So I'm going to take a couple years and build this into a camper and flat tow the jeep... I'll use the teardrop for a couple more years then move to the bus...

I also took the 35's off the teardrop and downsized to a 32... 35's are just to big and I'm to old to crawl in and out of it...LOL

I've thought about doing the bus RV conversion to tow my Jeep... Got a ways to go until got the Jeep to the level that I'd be ready to travel further to events, or to check out wheeling spots!!

I'm trying to get all my work done so I can start on the bus, I got the 456 axles I took out from underneath Gypsy and put them under my woods truck... Much peppier now...

Nothing happens to fast, my D44's I got a deal on and they took a year to get under my jeep. Takes time to save cash.. Everything on this jeep came off Gypsy... Traded for it... Now my brother is moving fast on his MJ. He turned it into a Golden Eagle MJ even though they never made one... He thinks they should of though.. I've been spending alot of time on it...

I've been working on the jeep, because we leave for Colorado in 3 weeks and I'm no were near ready... I did a 6 switch panel for the lockers and lights. I'm still working on the in cab winch controls...I also built a relay box out of an extra xj box. Local shop built me a front driveshaft and I got a couple covers from them. Did a hack n tap in the rear... Still need to do vents and it goes to alignment shop on tuesday.... WOOT WOOT
