ok guys i need some help. would a transfer case out of a grand cherokee work in my 98 xj. or where could i go to find out if it would work.

I don't have all the specifics, but yes it will. The spline count has to match.

A salvage yard(junk yard) has a book called a Hollanders manual,it list"s almost all parts that will interchange.

Make sure you are getting the same tcase. Many of the Grands were full time 4WD. Check the number on the case and pull yours first to check the spline count.

Check that it is either a 231J or a 242J that you are getting to replce your T-case. BTW what is wrong with your case?

I know the Grands came with the NP242, but did they actually come with the NP231s as well?

mine is a 231j t-case. the right rear wheel broke traction and spun. when it caught traction it started bouncin and i couldnt get on the clutch fast enough to get it to stop. when i pulled the t-case out and tore the rear output of i found the bearing was pushed thru the output case.

the xj is fixed. i took the tail shaft housing off of a t-case that a buddy of mine had the was broken in half but the housing was good. put it in last night took it for a test drive and it was good
