Few gears needing dentures. Rear in my Grand has been making noise for a couple of years and now I know why. Found 5 at a pick and pull, so next Sat will be a busy day.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170409/41fdf707970051767a292bb665bdfd49.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170409/d3a4d438ddc561c059122c0515c53b6a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170409/f5dfb19486659455fc8516a569183230.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170409/8d188ffcb683f433dc0ccddac8c0aec7.jpg

Looks good... Lincoln lock that sucker and call it a day!! LOL.. But I will say from those pics as far as I can tell, the ring gear looks good... might still be salvageable after replacing the spider gears... I mean I guess you can't see the pinion gear to see what shape it's in... I would think there'd be more damage or like the ring/pinion would be damaged from the metal parts coming off the spiders... But then again.... if you're able to snag one or multiple fairly cheap from the JY... might as well replace and know you got good gears going on..

Yea it will be easier and cheaper to swap. To rebuild this one will run me about 400. I can get one for 175 at the pick and pay.

Yeah, not that lucky where I'm at as far as the PNP selection.. I mean if you got a WJ, you're probably good to go at our PNP.. but if you got an XJ... good luck.. kills me, can't wait to get down south or at least somewhere that has more than 1 PNP, and that will stock more than maybe 1 XJ

Our PnP seems to always have a good selection of ZJs. When my wife's needed a door, I found one in black with the same pinstripe, it was from a 95 and hers is a 98. If I can, I might try to get me a front and a rear in 373. Mine is 355 and while not ideal 373 would be some better.

Decided to just replace the spider gears and side gears. Went to the PnP and picked up a set.... I literally picked up a set off the ground. Somebody had already pulled the axles and left these laying there. Which was lucky because I didn't have a socket or wrench to fit the little bolt that holds in the cross shaft. Found that out after I had pulled calipers , rotors and cover from another rear-end. I was getting ready to leave when I spotted these.

By the way the socket is a E10

That was awesome luck there... to have the parts just sitting there waiting for you to pick em up!! Yeah, not sure why they went to that one stupid random bolt like that.. lol.. So have you had a chance to put the new gears in?? Just wondering if that takes care of all of the sound in the rear or not.. I hope it gets you up and going again, and keep her going for a long while..

Waiting till Saturday to install. My son is gonna help me since it takes several hands to do. Was gonna get my wife to help but she doesn't want to break a nail. Lol. l think the reason for that type of bolt was they needed a small head to fit in that space.

He'll if I had seen this earlier in the week I could have hooked you up with a set of spiders. I have four 35s in the yard one that already has the axles pulled.

Swapped out the gears this morning. Took about 2 hrs start to cleanup. Waiting for the perma gasket to set up before I refill and test. A few pics of the old gears

Those are nasty. What is the ring and pinion like?

They were fine. No bad spots, no shiney spots and all teeth were sharp. I'm gonna run it for a couple of weeks and then drain, check and refill with fresh gear oil. I think I will go with 80w-140 gear oil. Jeep recommends that for my wife's since hers has the tow package, it might be better for mine since I am running larger tires and off-road it.

Yeah those definitely look pretty gnarly!! Should think that replacing those should take care of noises in the rear axle... 80w140?!! wow that's crazy... The XJ w/ tow package manual shows 70w-140... and that is what I'm running in mine now with the new gears... since I have the 33's and plan to run it a bit harder than stock setup on the street.. Look forward to hearing the outcome of this... and hope it has taken care of the issues/noises... and keeps you back on the road.. or off of it, for some fun times!!

almost looks like someone tried to weld the spiders but didn't know what they were doing.

I'm sure it'll quiet down with those replaced

Oh ok.. I mean whatever the manual says... The one you looked at could in fact say 80w-140... Wouldn't surprise me.. Glad seem to be taken care of as far as the rear end noises... I think XJ's are continuos noise makers... can go crazy trying to source and take care of them all.. That's why I make sure my first upgrade is a new stereo, good (well not the greatest in my case this time around, unfortunately) speakers, and at least a small sub (only running an older 100w 10" powered sub), and the few times I've driven it with the sub not installed.. heard all kinds of random sounds... so reinstalled it and good to go.. At least until I get the hatch glass situation taken care of, then get all the windows tinted correctly.. then I'll install my Alpine Type R 12 that I had in my last XJ... and then I'll be all set.. to never hear any future noises!!! LOL:smiley-scared003::smiley-scared003:

Most of mine is suspension noise. My rear coil spring isolaters are wore out so the spring rubs on the body. Plus my front lower control arms are always popping and carrying on, but they have always done that.

Coil spring isolators are easy enough to swap out, and get rid of that annoying sound.. As far as the lower control arms.. are the bushings worn out on them? Or the brackets bent up or something?? Just trying to figure out why they'd make so much noise..

They have made noise since I put them on. I think it is the camber bolts. They are tight. What I need to do is remove them and use regular bolts. I need to find my oblong washers that I have and weld them in. Control arms are adjustable and I really don't need the camber bolts to be adjustable. As far as the isolaters, I just turn the stereo up.

Wait.. I do that for all the random noises... I don't discriminate as to what makes the noise... If I hear a noise, I turn down real quick to make sure I haven't hit anyone, am not dragging anything, and then I just turn the music back up, noise is now taken care of!! :bacondance::smiley-scared003:
