My son Clayton made his first knife this week. We didn't concentrate alot on the blade, more on the building process. We started with an old circular saw blade and went from there, we went to Lowes and bought some brass rod to pin the handle but everything else we used what we had in the garage.. I'm trying to find something that interests him that'll get him out of his room..LOL

Very nice! Since you started with a circular saw blade, do you need to do any hardening or tempering or anything?

That came out nice for a first attempt

The saw blade is already hardened so it doesn't come apart on you when your cutting with them. We went the easy way on this one...

My buddy makes them out of bastard files. He made me one with a deer antler handle. Those bastard files work into a wicked big blade. He did say he needed to temper it.

You can use the smaller left over pieces of saw blade to make broad heads for arrows to.

Now building a home made bow and arrow sounds fun.... I should do some research on that....

Using the same piece of wood for the bow and knife handle would cool. Custom matching hunting set. Bet nobody has one of those.

I was wondering if a suspension leaf spring will work to make a knife? Only problem is that it will probably rust over time

Yes, it will work. High carbon alloy steel. You will want to soften it then re harden it though

Check out Youtube if you're interested. There are tons of instructional videos on how to do exactly this.

That's pretty awesome.. Maybe I should keep those old leafs I was going to try and dump... Pretty sure I'll be able to find another set once I move back down south, and am finally able to have some space to do anything..

Saw a video today on FB that someone shared that was a guy taking a large segmented blade that he cut down and build a hatchet, with brass and then wood for handles.. was a pretty BA build.. would love to learn how to do something like that one day for sure.. especially as nice and smooth as he made it all out to be.. I'll keep searching and seeing if I can find the video on YT, so I can share it.. it wouldn't let me open it in a link form so that I could copy and paste it..

Well I'll try it this way... the only way I could link it was through the FB page that shared it (not sure if it was them making it or what..).. Hatchet Build (https://www.facebook.com/muhendislikharikalarii/videos/1344801862242570/)

Think you should just go ahead and build that J10/JK rig... sell it to me, then you can build all kinds of knives with the newly purchased equipment... lol.. but seriously... look forward to seeing that progress pics of the hatchet build... wish I knew how to do that kind of stuff.. I could probably manage to do hatchet itself and maybe even the handle... but wouldn't come out looking nearly that nice... But I guess that's one of those gets better with practice things..

Watch video's on you tube then attack it like you know what your doing, I alway's say the hardest part is getting started. It works itself out after that...

Pretty much feel that way about everything I've wanted to try doing... Now just to get on it and give things a whirl and see how they turn out..

My wife always asks me when I get a idea in my head "Do you know how to do that" and I always respond "I'm not smart enough to know I can't.... She just rolls her eye's anymore when I come up with another hair brained idea....

Been seeing commercials for a show called Forged In Fire... apparently is a competition show for forgers building knives.. not sure if you've heard of or seen it... but figured I'd throw it out there for some ideas on how to make knives, or ideas/designs for knives..

Oh ok... like I said, hadn't seen the show itself, only the commercials... Heck never even heard of it, but seems like the commercials are for a new season, so guess it's been out for at least one season... Guess I'll have to look into it on the Firestick and watch the previous shows..
