View Full Version : Replacing stereo with Android tablet

I have an extra Android tablet (Nexus 7)laying around my house and I've been thinking of using it as my entertainment system for my XJ. I've looked on YouTube and all I'm finding is videos of them being installed in newer vehicles with double din openings. Has anyone here done something like this in their Cherokee? I'm just looking for some ideas while I gather the necessary parts needed to replace the stereo. I'll definitely take pictures and video once I start the process in case someone else is interested in doing this.

I haven't done this, but I am interested in how this comes off. I am needing to upgrade the sounds in the XJ anyway

The geek in me also looks forward to seeing how you do this. Would love to hear more details on your plan.

My solution was simply to replace the factory cassette deck with a bluetooth capable head unit. I just feed music to it right from my phone, but then I also have the option for using mp3 cds, the radio, and other aux-in devices.

I know that's not what you're going for, but I wanted to keep mine simple. Plus, car stereos are SO much cheaper than they used to be. Even for halfways decent brand-name stuff. My cheap-o Pioneer sounds great to me.

Good luck!! :)

The music idea on a tablet sounds great, but I also use a GPS navigation program on my phone and would benefit from a larger screen

Have thought about doing this in other vehicles, need thought about it on the XJ.. as I like the simplicity of a standard head unit.. but do like the idea of the larger screen especially if running any type of GPS setup.. look forward to seeing how this works out and I might have to change my mind on that for the XJ build up...

A bigger display would definitely be cool. Just imagine having something like the Torque app built right in to your console. That would be awesome!

I'd personally want it to be able to fold up inside the dash or stash away somewhere, just to discourage thievery.

I ordered a dash bezel from ebay, but I haven't pulled the trigger on the Android dual din stereo system yet.

Have any of you guys crammed a double-din head unit in to one of your XJs yet?

My 2000 XJ and my 91 MJ both came with the odd-sized "1.5 din" sized stereos from the factory so both have adapters to take a single din. I'd be doing some cutting if I wanted double-din displays. :O Is that not always the case?

Man that is a nice setup.. had wished I had found something like that when I was looking to get a double din setup for my Ram.. Might have to pick one up to replace the one that I did purchase when I first bought the Ram as I've been having a few issues with it.. Think it'd be more fun to have the option to run the same apps I can on my phone.. especially a few that are GPS oriented that I run while driving looking for certain things, would just make it far easier and safer to locate them.. Might have to look into a Android head unit that is a single din with a pop out screen.. that way I can have the larger screen, but not have to cut for a double din.. But either way look forward to seeing a writeup on someone doing it... and I might have to change my mind...

I can say that putting a double din in my Ram that already had a double din unit was enough fun... I can only imagine how much more cutting I'd have to do on the XJ to fit one... But it would look awesome for sure..

You'll have to cut into your ducting for the hvac in order for it to fit.

Yeah, that's what I kinda figured. Wanted that clarified before everyone got excited by double-din stereos. There's quite the size difference between the hole in your dash and a double-din head unit.

It would suck to order a cool unit only to figure out you're ruining stuff to make it fit. I wouldn't want a stereo in my HVAC. I find my decks get hot enough just being in the vicinity of the ducting - let alone being a part of it.

Found this while looking at a Facebook post about 2din head unit in xj.

It's an aftermarket switch panel that goes under your hvac controls.

I've been considering an upgrade as well. I would like bluetooth instead of the old school Sony 1-din cd player I have now. chinavision.com has android radios for a good price. msmoorenburg got one for his honda from them.

I have been looking to do this as well. I bought an extra bezel but like someone else stated I haven't broke out the hack saw just yet. Mine is more for a large screen for a rear view camera. I have neck problems and turning all the way around is not an option. May just mount a video screen separate and use a single DIN receiver for tunes.

Same one I was looking at. Perfect if you move the HVAC controls up above the head unit. You can keep everything and have all the old stuff functional

I have an old I-pad laying around that I thought about doing something like this with. But after some consideration, I just got a Kenwood deck with bluetooth and all that, and ill keep the i-pad in my glove box, or just use my phone for the clinometer and speed and everything on my "torque" app.
