I think Im gonna change my tranny fluid and filter for the first time on my own. What is the best filter, the best seal, and the best fluid?

2001 jeep xj

Thanks

The aw4 uses Dexron III transmission fluid. I just used the standard parts store filter and seal kit and it's doing fine in mine.

I'd drain and replace the fluid and leave the filter and seal alone. Not much to those tranny "filters" anyway

I used Valvoline Max life, comes in a read bottle. Paid $17 for a gallon. I also added about a 1/3 of a bottle of Luca Transmission fix. Nothing is wrong with my transmission but if you read the bottle, The Lucas oil is used as a conditioner. My tranny is butter smooth. Better than having it done somewhere else. I spent $50 on supplies versus $169.99 plus tax here in town. I think that's a crazy price to pay.

Besides oil I'm pretty sure none of my fluids have been changed in at least 5 years. I should probably get on that.

How dirty is your tranny fluid?

Couldn't yell ya, I've never checked. I inherited the jeep from my wife and only recently started working on it. I plan on doing a full fluids check/replacement on my next oil change.

Hey thete all. busy serbicing my stock 99 face-lift xj and need some advice please?.
the owners Manual says to use mopar transmission fluid or an equivalent marked Dexron III or Mercon. I hot Castril Transmax Dex III and now everyone tells me to stay aeay from it and ratjer use Dex IV. Any advice?

Stick with the Dex III. Anything else will make the tranny slip

eish. spelling. Sorry guys. new phone and auto correct still messing about.

Thanks for the feefback. i feel the same about it, but doubting my decision. very scared of buggering up the transmission. closest i can find here is Castrol Transmax Dex III. I thought it's the correct oil, but full of doubt now after reading all related posts i could find

I bought the high mileage red bottle, high mileage tranny max life valvoline. works fine.

When my tranny dies at some point in the future. Is it possible to upgrade to a better tranny or a tougher AW4 with like better parts or thicker parts to last even longer. I would pay extra for it.

If you have Valvoline in your area that's what I run and it's fine. It's the only Dexron III I could find locally for myself.

Thank you very much all, before I go give the oil back, I'll phome Castrol this morning to make sure. Valvoline is hard to come by here as only a couple of places keeps it. The nearest place is about 25miles away .This is what I coyld get, bit not dure if it'll work and not bugger up the transmission http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161107/5bec75368ff1fe61f18cb63209c81fae.jpg

Hey all. just a question.. seeing tjat the AW4 was designed in the 80's and originally worked with Dexron II, then upgraded to Dexron III/ MERCON. why woul you then use atf+4

Ok. let me confuse some of you.. the 2000 service Manua clearly states Dexron II as an alternative to mopar oil for my transmission. see below and comment please http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161107/75dcf6471634d3c3f1d9825ba5efcf05.jpg

I have no explanation. However everybody has good luck with Dex 3 and bad luck with Dex 4. It is all about the addatives
