This may sound stupid. But I installed a used gauge cluster into my 2001 jeep xj 250K. I tested everything to make sure it works and it does. Except when I pop it into 4 wheel drive the light inside the cluster does not come on?

I did switch from a Dana 35 to a Chrysler 8.25 rear end.

Did I forget to connect something?

Your thoughts.

Most likely the light in the cluster is out. Try moving the jeep slowly and turn the wheel slightly. You'll feel resistance if you're in 4wd. But stop immediately because that isn't good on your Jeep. You'll be ok to do a quick test

The XJ doesn't have a computer controlled 4wd like modern vehicles. I believe the light that comes on in the cluster is wired into your transfer case. I don't know 100% cause when I click into 4wd I get no lights and it does work. Does you shifter have a full time/part time option?

Yes it has full and part time.

The light is less accurate than looking at the position of the transfer case lever. The NP242 has an issue that even when the light on the dash is off and the lever is in 2wd it's still in part time 4wd.

I have learned to put the auto in neutral while moving ahead about <20 mph, then switch the transfer case into 2wd. Works well, but I still take it easy making my first turn just to be on the safe side.

You'll stretch a chain quick if you're in part time 4wd on a surface with lots-o-friction.

It's hard, for me, to test when it's in full time 4wd. Part time you can feel the steering struggle with you in a turn.

I tried the 4wheel drive this morning in 4full and it works and it is like a half crow hop compared when it was with the dana 35 it was a huge crow hop.
