So this is the start of my 2001 Xj build.
Bought a bone stock Xj from a friend who had bought a new vehicle.
4.0 with 162k on it. Unfortuneatly, it is a Minnesota Jeep. So i have found some rust.
Got it home and in the shop and took almost the whole front clip off (bumper, grill, lights, fenders, etc).
Went to take the rear bumper off, and man were the bolts and bumper rusty. I opted to just torch if off (becasue why not right??)
Got the bumper off and then underneath the caps revealed the rust!! And of course, cant have that.
So, today i had a fun day using the torch, grinder, and BFH.
Cut out the rust and used what was left of the metal to fold it and weld it as even with the rear tail light as I could get it. Now, keep in mind I have never used a torch or a grinder before yet alone do body work (first project of any sort, although I have grown up working on cars).
So got the rear rust taken care of and thats about it for the day.

MORE TO COME!!

one tons
the whole nine yards! just a matter of time! supposed to be picking up material next week for building a cage, then the fun begins.

I like the enthusiasm! You've got some extensive plans but it's a great way to learn. Dive in and get working!

I had to trim a fair bit to fit 33s with 4.5". 37s is gonna be lots of cutting and probably welding but the lcg is gonna be amazing! I'm planning on 37s one day but it's a long way down the road for me.

I can relate to your rust dilemmas. Mine live in Iowa before I got it and I'm still dealing with the effects. I did the cut and fold like you did but had to weld in new panels because it ate up to high to fold. I'm in the process of replacing the rockers with 2x6 tubing as well to rid it of rot. You can see the progress here. http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=21340 Although I warn you it's somewhat halted due to work and life... :bang: Also had to replace about 12 patches in the floor cause of rust. :bang:

Anyway, welcome to the site and feel free to post up and ask questions. We'd be glad to help out. Look forward to the build progress!

37's will fit on a 4.5, that's what I run on my trail jeep. You gotta cut alot and that requires welding the rear wheelwells back together.

Heading there myself. But unlike Jonb8, I will have tube fenders put in.
