I just bought a 96 limited, 5.2. Drove it 525 miles home with no issues, but after driving in a rainstorm developed a bad miss. Worse under load like pulling a hill or accelerating to pass. So far replaced plugs, wires, cap (twice) rotor, cleaned throttle body and IAC, ran seafoam through it and a couple bottles of Lucas fuel injector cleaner. Had codes pulled, shows misfires on all 8 cylinders.
And I'm Ron, live in Kansas, my second Jeep, years ago I had a 75 Cherokee I loved to death.

Ron, since you are new to this vehicle, I suggest you change the O2 sensor. They wear out over time and no one replaces them regularly. A worn out sensor will affect your fuel/air mixture and can cause the symptoms you have

Could a failing ignition coil cause these symptoms?

I'm thinking it maybe didn't have a good solid connection with dielectric grease and then you hit the bad rainstorm and some water got in there.

Thats where my mind was headed also.... Ive seen way too many fail like that. Ive heard a trick about spraying it with WD40 and seeing if it changes, since the WD40 will absorb the moisture.... I dont know if thats a fool proof test though.

Somebody told me the coil either works or it doesn't, going to try swapping out the battery, see if that helps.

If you have an ohm meter I can give you the testing procedure for them

Not true. You could have a ground issue pop up anywhere, would seem like the coil was out. I'd check voltage at the coil, cap and battery for sure!! Got 13 volts?
