So I have decided to upgrade my poor old 99 Honda Accord with 300k for something newer. So after numerous days on CL searching, I finally found a car the wife accepted and i can deal with at a "ok Price" So here starts the build/repair on my new DD. The car was caught in a flood and salvaged out and sold. Some poor sucker bought the car thinking he fix and it was over his head and sold it to me for a major loss. All I knew at the time is it had a high end knock and the 3.3v6 has issues with timing chain/supporting parts.

So here is my new "tow truck" and the Sonata

So after looking the car over searching for signs of moisture inside the car or even a water line i was having doubts it was a flood car. So i dove into the motor and wanted to have a look at the timing chain. I found this..... both chains show no signs of wear.....

So time to drop the pan and the fun starts

Yup it hydro-locked and broke #2 rod/piston and that was the noise i heard.

So here comes to the build part. The car has almost 0 info online on yanking a engine and reinstall. So I decided to make a build on this process. So after family comes to town you will see some major engine swapping going on. (entire engine cradle come out the bottom on this car)

I tried to drop one out the bottom once in my shop in WA state. I had a nice sky crane in it but ran out of ceiling room.

Well i'm hoping it will be easy like the 99 Mercury Sable. If i had to do that car again i could do it in a day :)

The hoist would make it easy. In my case, the entire front engine and drivetrain and steering system dropped out as a unit

I'm surprised ..

... as by the looks of things ... that engine should purr like a kitten .. :rolleye0012:

Keen to see how you manage the repairs ..

Since I needed to get oil and RTV to fix the oil pan i stopped. So went back Sunday to button it up :) It fired up with out a issue and I drove it home 16 miles :bacondance::bacondance:

Only outstanding issues

No speedo (i think its a range sensor)
Need to surface the rotors and balance the tires
Find out why i can't fillup the tank (throws up at me)

Other than small things i think it was a great purchase, Oh i forgot what it's like to have passing power :)

well lastnight i fixed the speedo :) the VSS sensor plug was corroded. So a little brake clean , sand paper ,elbow grease it was off to working :). Took it for a 10 mile trek on to the freeway without issues. Next i will turn rotors, balance wheels and scan the PCM/ABS to see why the ESC OFF light is on. The goal is to make it's first trip to Houston (80 mile round trip) will be friday

Well I spent a hr or so with my ole trusty steed and resurfaced 4 rotors and balanced the tires. All the dust covers up front were reinstalled since no leaks were found. It did felt odd cutting rotors on a 34k mile car But it only took 1 light pass to get the shake out.

So I made the main voyage into the office today with out a issue. The car ran 180 degrees all the way in with 1 ecu monitor in not ready (Cat). I am still waiting for a Snap-On personality K-5A key to show up in the mail to get the ESC OFF light issue resolved. So stay tuned :bacondance::bacondance:

Well the car has been solid for 500 miles now. I guess 2hrs in standstill traffic can be a great way to make sure all is well. The ESC OFF light is now off. The issue was steering wheel correlation to rack was off (had a gut feeling that is what is was) So I reset it back to 0, I plan to move the joint over a tooth on the rack to get the steering wheel back to center the next time it's on the lift :)

Next task is to install a updated radio stay tuned :)

Well i know now why 1 ready monitor never went to ready. It appears O2 sensors don't like water :(

You think the water made it to them through the exhaust?

yup the motor digested (popping a rod in the process) and appeared to keep running
