I have worn out ball joints that need to be replaced in my 88', the problem is that the one sold it to me did an axle swap. He says that they came off another 88'. the thing is that it now has a chry8.25 and everything says that they didn't start using that axle till 91', so if there off a 91' then the lower ball joint is different than an 88'. so did they use the chrysler axle in 88', or is there anyway to tell which ball joint to use without getting the ball joint first:stars:

Probably not what you want to hear, but I'd take the ball joint off and go to the parts store with it. Let them start pulling parts out and compare them all.

First of all the chrysler 8.25 is a rear axle, the dana 30 was the only one use in the front so your looking for ball joint for a dana 30 from 84-01 the lower joint is the same its a k7403 moog # this is also a problem solver joint that allows up to 1.75 deg of adjustment. So you really don't have to worry much . Hope this helps

I know that the 8.25 is a rear axle, but did they only start using it in 91. If so then the front axle would have been from the same year. And the part numbers I found is K3137T for the lower ball joint in the 88' axle and K3161T for the lower in the 91.

ok heres the scoop according to chrysler :

Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96
So that being the case your saying that your front axle would be a 91. As I said earlier the k7403 is an adjustable unit. You are correct in the part number for the 91 its the k3161t. The k7403 can be used in both due to the adjustability. I gave that number so you could be ok no matter what your front axle is. I guess the big question here would be did they swap both the front and rear axle or just the rear to get the stronger 8.25 back there? If you have the bill of material number off the front I can tell you that. Let me know.

Here is a link to a very good article on the adjustable ball joint and installation on a cherokee

http://www.madxj.com/MADXJ/technical/technicalfiles/ARadjustableBallJoints/adjustableballjoints.htm

This should answer most of you questions, if not let me know and we'll go from there

Buy ball joints for both "possible" axles. Install the ones that fit and return the ones that you didn't use.

Or just remove your ball joints first and take em in to compare.
