Hey guys! I'm new to the forum, but have been around vehicles all my life. I'm normally a VW guy (so im used to fixing cars...lol), but have owned a few jeeps in the past, most recently a 2010 WK that we decided it was time to get rid of it.

So I'm picking up a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic from a friend of mine for $200 later this week. She's been driving it for a year with no issues, but is picking up a new car this week, and she just wants it gone. The 4 wheel drive works, and it's got 260k on the 4.0 in line 6cyl. It needs some love, but it's cheap and will be a good hunting and ice fishing rig. 2 of the windows don't work, and the AC doesn't work, and the heat only comes out of the defrost no matter what setting it's on. I'm sure I'll find 100 other things as I tear into it too. It does have an aftermarket cd player and speakers from what I can see, and it has almost new snow tires on it.

First order of business will be to check the heat and AC, along with fixing the blend door problem. Then I will work on sourcing a fender and everything I will need to repair the front end and make it look decent, along with checking and changing all of the fluids, and finding some new wheels and tires.

I'm sure I'll be posting up looking for parts soon, if anyone has some of what I need laying around. Im really looking forward to digging into this thing and making the ultimate ice fishing/hunting/camping rig :)

Pretty sweet deal! The tires alone are worth more than $200. You probably already know this, but I think the blend door is vacuum actuated and the vacuum ball reservoir is located in the front bumper right about where the damage looks to be. That's where I would start looking for vacuum leaks.

It looks like there's already tube rockers welded in there too. Or am I wrong?

Thanks abebehrmann! I did read about that. Ive heard that half of them will function as normal with that line capped off, and half need the vaccuum ball there or they wont work. My first thought is to cap it off first and hope for the best.

ive also heard about the child safety window switch bypass for the passenger side windows not working, so i may try that after some troubleshooting. I just need to get the thing home and start tearing into it :D

Someone else pointed that out too. I havent seen the Jeep in a few months, and i dont recall looking at it that close (i didnt realize she was going to sell it to me so cheap, or i would have taken more pictures and picked at it lol). But it appears to be either that, or a really straight rust line that formed somehow.

Bring it out to Freedom Ridge Ryan at least just to check the place out. You'll have fun whether it's ready to tackle the big stuff or not.

Nice catch! I didn't notice that at first, but I think you're right! I wonder if they were rusted out and one of the previous owners opted to do that instead of replacing.

I was curious since people started pointing that out, so I just texted her and asked her to get me some pictures of the rockers so we can tell for sure.

Ugh I can't wait to get this thing home so I can just look at all this stuff myself lol

I dont recall what all i PM'd you about lol. But im basically looking for parts just to get it square and have 2 headlights again.

Im in search of:
Front header panel
Rt side headlight and surround (and the metal mount behind the headlight)
grille
and right front fender

I think the bumper can wait for the time being. I may be able to pound the old one straightish until i find another one.

Don't go order anything online. The yard just outside town here has 3 or 4 with all that stuff intact on them. You want me to see what it'll take to get the stuff for you?

I bought a header panel out there for my 88 with the grill and headlights and all for like $60 if I remember right.

You may already know this, but RockAuto always seems to have the best prices when I'm looking for new parts. I believe they are an advertiser on here and if you google "RockAuto Discount Code" you can always find at least a 5% off code.

Thanks! But XJ Jake came through. I have to make a call after work, but if they have one left, ill be heading out in the morning to grab all the parts i need :D

If that doesnt work, ill have to jump on Rock Auto and get the check card warmed up lol

Well, she's home! Delivered to my house even with a full tank lol. The disassembly has started, after I got the hood open because the release cable is broke.

It's rusty underneath, and leaks a little bit. But I DID find that the blower motor works perfectly, it just doesn't switch with the blendoor yet. The freon is also low, but it holding a charge, so I'll probably fill that up tonight too. I haven't looked into the windows yet, but the hammer and I have been busy straightening everything out. Here's the progress so far. I needed a break lol.

Issues so far:
AC needs to be charged
Blower still only works on defrost
Windows still don't work
Passenger headlight doesn't work on low beam, even with a new bulb and pigtail

But here she is

I got both headlights working this morning, and I realized that the hood probably hasn't been opened in 1.5 years.... Needless to say, the oil was a couple quarts low :(

Next up is figuring out the windows. None of them work from any of the switches, and the little green lights on the switches don't light up on any of them.

The passenger low beam fuse was out... Go figure lol.

I finally got all the windows to work (the RR needs a regulator, it barely goes up and down). The ground wire was broke off in the drivers door, then just the drivers side worked. I then chased it to the passenger side switch, took it apart, cleaned the connections, reinstalled and voila!

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/Rocketryan1/Mobile%20Uploads/20150920_121522_zpsqmufwk6d.jpg (http://s38.photobucket.com/user/Rocketryan1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150920_121522_zpsqmufwk6d.jpg.html)

I also got the blower to come out of whatever setting I put it on. A vacuum line was completely melted off, so that has been repaired and now works!

The AC worked for a few minutes and blew ice cold, then stopped. I tried the "shim" fix but I'm afraid I'm just going to have to replace the AC clutch.

Next up, take it out and wash it!

Pinkyman
09-20-2015, 02:57 PM
It's pretty well sorted and all back together now. I even washed it and it cleans up alright. I may do a coat of wax just because, but I'm not sure I have that much motivation haha.

The next step will be spray the grill and fender black, and get some undercoating on those tube rail things.

Hey looking good Ryan! Glad you got it slapped back together in such quick order. It's amazing what fixing just a few things can do for a vehicle. Any other glitches that you have come across yet? Most importantly, and I think everyone wants to know, what are your future plans for it?!?!

I really havent found too much yet, but ive literally only driven it a few blocks so far haha. I did notice that the crank pulley has been rubbing on the PS line. Its not through yet, but should probably be replaced. Its also pretty rusty underneath, but theres not much i can do about that.

In the near future, my plans are:
Paint and clear the white panel/grille etc...
Repair the AC
Undercoat the tube rockers
Clean underneath and find whats leaking oil and trans fluid
Check the front end and brakes and make sure nothing is about to fall off
Change all of the fluids
Possibly new exhaust

I would like to freshen up the suspension with new shocks and springs, but with a little man due in 2 weeks, that may not happen for a while. That and im kind of afraid of what is all rusted and may break while im taking the old stuff out lol. Also, i need to make sure the 4WD works. The "Part Time" light comes on when shifted into 4 High, but it hasnt left the garage with it engaged yet. Its a far cry from my last jeep that was full time AWD, or my truck where you just push a button.

I also opened up the rear hatch yesterday and found 2 black painted bumper ends, a Chiltons manual, 2 extra headlights, and a brand new exhaust pipe for the muffler back. It was a nice surprise!

Sounds like you have a decent plan of attack. Grab yourself a couple cans of PB Blaster and start soaking stuff down now, you'll thank yourself later. Pick away at it piece by piece and it'll get to where you need it to be soon enough.

Take a look at the valve cover gasket it could be just that leaking and it's a relatively easy fix. Could also be the oil filter adapter block.

You know where to find me if you have questions! Also the guys here are top notch and know more than I do. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

As far as the AC compressor goes, should the compressor clutch spin freely? Mine has some hard resistance to it. It literally worked for 10 minutes after i added a little bit of freon (it was holding a charge, but it was a little low), then it stopped. I tried the "shim mod" and removed 2 of the shims so that there was only 1 in it, and now it doesnt work at all...

xj-jake
09-21-2015, 12:01 PM
Mine spins with a little resistance and mine works but I'm not sure how easy it's supposed to spin. You could always bypass it and put a pulley in instead of the AC pump.

I looked into that, but Im a big guy and i sweat really easy, id rather keep it and stay comfortable lol. That and if i get stuck in the rain and everything it would be nice not to have it get all foggy.

09-21-2015, 03:27 PM
The outside pulley should spin with no resistance unless engaged. The compressor guts will spin with a fair amount of resistance in any situation. Make sure there is voltage going to the clutch. If not, the refrigerant may be leaking off

Ok so im looking into options for paint for the grille, header panel and fender. I want to do it cheap (its a $200 Jeep afterall), but i want it to look OK at least. I have the option of doing a 2 stage and all that in my garage, or i can just spray paint it black. Either way it will look better than it does now.

Has anyone spray painted panels? I was thinking maybe a gloss black rattle can, or even a flat black and then clearing over it? Im not a paint guy so i have no idea....lol

So go figure, i was emailing an old coworker of mine today, and showed her the progress on the Jeep, and as luck would have it, she has a black '97 Sport sitting in the yard at her house like 30 miles away! Too little too late lol. She said it has a problem with the cooling system, and that i should come take it..........

Tonight i will be tearing into the AC system again. The compressor clutch was rusty as all get out, so i cleaned it and removed 2 of the shims, and now it doesnt work at all.

I think ill be adding 1 shim, and cleaning the rust/crap off of the compressor side (with the clutch removed) tonight to see if i can get it to work again.

Pinkyman
09-23-2015, 07:39 PM
Welp, I got the AC to work great for like 20 minutes, but if the smoke coming out of my compressor tells me anything...... it tells me I need a new compressor and clutch lol

I did take it for its first drive tonight. Its kind of like driving a boat lol. It's a lot different than my 13 GLi. But it seems to run strong, and shifts pretty nice. The steering seems a little loose, I'll have to check on that.

I dont know what this is supposed to mean... lol

I did take another look underneath, and its not as bad as i originally thought. Its rusty, but not like falling apart rusty. I need to get some penetrant on those shock bolts and leaf spring bolts so that i can get some new shocks and shackles in there. And i need to do something about that exhaust too. I may be picking up a new AC compressor and clutch tonight, so hopefully my AC will work. Then i can get to steam cleaning that engine bay.

Great score! And kudos for the work you've done so far. You work fast my friend! Well i took her on her maiden voyage this morning. 36 miles into the office downtown, and so far so good (knock on wood).

The AC still seems to kind of work when it wants to. It was working for a minute, then shut off, and if i left it off for a bit, it would work again for a few minutes. Ill have to look into that further when i get back from vacation on Sunday :sad0147:

Ugh I can't get the damn AC to work consistently. I found my electric fan was spinning super slow, so I took it apart and cleaned the brushes, and it spins as it should now. But after running for a while, the fan spins, but the compressor shuts down. Maybe I need to try removing a shim on my new (used) compressor. The AC is the one last thing I want to get working on this thing before I can move on to cosmetic repairs.

You might be a little undercharged. Check to see if the clutch is getting power when it stops. If not, the low pressure switch is probably interrupting it

Pinkyman
09-28-2015, 08:23 AM
Ill have to do that tonight. When it stops working, the electric fan stays running, but the compressor is not running. The pressures are good, and last night i tried jumping the high and low pressure switches when it stopped working, and i still couldnt get the compressor to kick back on.

I would still want to verify the voltage to the compressor clutch at this point. If it is getting voltage, then you may need to change the clutch

So i just found out that my Clam Nanook may be like 5" too long to fit in the XJ. I guess im going to have to get it out of the basement and just try to make it fit, but im going to be super bummed if it doesnt

What im finding online is the rear cargo area with the rear seat down is about 56" (and im assuming thats to the bottom of the front seats) and i havent measured it yet, but according to the interwebs my Nanook is about 61" long, and about 14" high.

I guess at least i thought of it early enough that i can build some sort of receiver hitch cargo carrier that can fit my icehouse if it wont fit in the Jeep....

You should be able to fit it in there diagonally, if the cargo area is actually 56''. I'm 6'1'', and I've slept in the back, diagonally, fairly comfortably.

Not sure about the 98, but the earlier XJ had a removable bench seat. If you take out the bench and flip the back forward you might make it. On mine anyway, there is a little lever on the passenger side connecting arm that allows that side to detach and then you move that side forward and pull the seat toward you and it will come free

So I went out and did the "shim mod" on my AC compressor, and it fired up and worked.... I ran it for almost an hour and went for a long drive, turning it on and off, and no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to shut off!

I'm scared to say, but it seems to be working great as of now.... I guess I'll find out next time I take it for a drive, I'll probably take it shooting this weekend to be sure.

One other issue I found, I can't get the "part time" to show on the cluster when I engage the 4 wheel drive. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. I guess that will be my next issue to chase down.

So far so good with the AC, and I lubed up all the linkages and everything, and the 4hi and lo are both functioning :)

I was checking everything out and realized I have a headlight out. I guess if that's all that I have to do its not too bad.

The fender and grill will be coming out in the next week or so and getting some fresh black paint! Then I'll probably wash and wax the rest of it so that it looks somewhat uniform.

XJ is looking good!! Try playing with the window lock switch on the drivers door, and see if that won't give the passenger door power or if it'll roll up from the drivers door at all...

Pinkyman
10-04-2015, 05:56 PM
I tried playing with the window lock, no dice. The weird thing is that all 3 of the other windows work from the main switch, and from their individual switches. But the passenger front won't go up or down, and the little green light on the switch won't light up.

Pinkyman
10-05-2015, 08:07 AM
Well i found my issue with the passenger window not working. I took the door panel off last night, wiggled some wires, and it worked... I could move the whole harness at the plug and get it to work and stop working, so ive come to the conclusion that i have a broken/breaking wire between the switch and the door. Ill have to get it apart again and chase the broken wire and replace it, but at least it works for now :)

Next up will be sanding and undercoating the trailer hitch, and getting a few more coats on the rock rails, and im going to try to hang the brand new tailpipe that came with the jeep, but wasnt installed. The muffler is currently just hanging with nothing attached to it on the back side.

Looking good Ryan. Sounds like you found a good one. I'd be looking at the drivers window switch for your window issue. All other switches take power from there if I remember right. You'll love it this winter.

bluedragon436
10-05-2015, 08:24 AM
Glad you got it figured out... Yes it is a PITA to chase wires and having to replace them, but at least you've figured out where the problem exists, and it is a fairly easy remedy to the issue.. Ran all new wires throughout my XJ for speakers, instead of tracing and splicing wires.. I think the wires that run the boots to the doors, are common failure spots for the XJ's!!

Pinkyman
10-05-2015, 08:30 AM
Yeah it seemed like someone had been in the drivers door before, but the ground somehow broke free, that was my initial issue. I dont mind chasing wires, especially now that i have it narrowed down lol.

Im debating undercoating the bottom of the doors (from the trim strip down) to protect it and cover up some of the ugly rust.... I guess ill think about it when i have the undercoating out this week to do the hitch thats all rusty. I thought about doing the roof too...... Its ugly with all that rust. I should just undercoat the whole thing bahaha

Oh and i found out last night that the trailer light harness is fully functional! Thats definetely not what i expected!

I need to round up some hatch struts too. They dont work and were a pain when we were shooting yesterday. I had to use a rake to keep the hatch open.

Yeah I am not against chasing wires (do it day in and day out all over the aircraft I work on)... But it is far easier once you know what wires to look at and have a much smaller area to chase them..

Yeah, only thing about doing undercoating on all of it is, do you have the stuff that actually dries, or the stuff that stays kind of mushy?? I've seen both that comes in a can, and had a friend do his truck doors with the stuff, and it was consistently mushy for quite a while till we finally got it all media blasted off, then sprayed some bed liner on it...

That's awesome to hear about the harness.. I wish I had the same harness on the 97 that the 98 had, it had the 4-pin and 7-pin plug, and all wires were there for the 7-pin, with the exception of the power wire, which was run, just needed to be reconnected to the battery... But I at least wish I had the wire harness w/ the little converter box... Cause my 97 has a hitch (well had, until I uninstalled it for the rear bumper install (which has it's own hitch))... but no trailer wiring... so not sure why the PO installed the hitch on it, or if he was just hauling a small trailer during the day only or what... But either way, plan on finding the harness online and installing so I can at least have the 4-pin again.. Figure the biggest trailer I'll haul with my XJ will be a pop up, or some smaller utility trailer.. maybe one day a jet ski trailer.. But most towing will be done with my Ram.

Same here. We have a 2009 Palomino Pop-Up that we haul everywhere in the summer. We used our old WK 3.7 to pull it, and havent used it since we got rid of that one. So im happy this thing is coming together, otherwise id have to borrow my father in laws truck every time we wanted to haul it anywhere.

On another side note, im bummed that i cant drive the Jeep for a week or so. My wife is due with our first child tomorrow, so i need to have a reliable vehicle that already has the car seat and "bug out (aka hospital) bags" in it :) But as soon as he arrives, that means I get a week off to work on the Jeep..... Is that last picture a rusted unibody channel? a.k.a. pseudo frame?

Unfortunately it sure is :smiley-scared003:

You can see the front of the RR leaf spring in the picture, that might help show where it is a little better.

Well it's not pretty, but it will do until I make it more permanent. That and it's not quite done yet..

If I measured correctly, my box will sit exactly as it does in the picture, and be sealed all the way around at .51 cubic feet. I haven't decided yet, but I may move the sub to the inside and carpet the outside so that you can't see it at all, since my jeep sleeps outside and I worry about theft.

Hopefully I can find out how it sounds this weekend.

Looks good.. Like I said before... If I could manage to build an enclosure like that with the proper airspace for my Type R, I'd love to do something like that.... Just make sure whatever amp you choose to put under the seat is one that doesn't heat up too much.... back in HS, had a friend of mine who almost caught the back seat on fire with the amp under the seat because of the heat!! I forgot to add that i fixed a broken wire by the rear hatch, and now all of my interior dome lights work :)

Im also thinking about replacing the transmission pan gasket thats leaking all over my garage floor, but the thought of adding new fluid scares me since i have no idea when the last fluid change was done. I think ill be ok with just a pan drop and replace the gasket and fill it with a few quarts, instead of doing a full flush.

Also, with the MN winter quickly approaching, im looking into tow hook ideas, and convincing the wife that i NEED a 2" BB lift........

So im still trying to figure out what lift to go with. I just want a couple of inches without breaking the bank.

I was looking at the Fat Bobs 2" rear shackle and 2" front spacer lift for like $85. The only issue i have is that i think my rear leafs are going soft (almost flat from what i can see), and i currently have about a 1/2" reverse rake. I dont want to have to replace the springs AND get a lift, especially on a $200 Jeep.

The reverse rake is more noticeable when i park on a hill

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/Rocketryan1/Mobile%20Uploads/20150920_144711_zpsrb8kppud.jpg (http://s38.photobucket.com/user/Rocketryan1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150920_144711_zpsrb8kppud.jpg.html)

So im debating between the add-a-leaf, and the shackles for the rear. I know im going to need new shocks.

That and a local guy has 3.5" IRO leafs and Rubicon Express 4.5" front coils for sale for $200 for the set, but i dont want to have to mess with pinion angles and all that. And if i were to run just the rear IRO leafs, it would be way more lift in the rear than i want.

Pictures of my nasty shocks just for fun

So i noticed yesterday that my AC compressor wasnt working, again........ I checked the level, and low and behold, EMPTY!!

At least i am almost positive that its the o-rings on the compressor lines that i should have replaced, unless the compressor is leaking internally. That or is a leaky schrader valve that came loose in all the times i have messed with it. I know it held a charge for the last 1.5 years, and i replaced the compressor, and now it wont hold for 2 weeks.

That and i need to take another trip to the DMV..... I seem to have lost my front license plate somewhere in the last day or so.

Occasionally they have some things that are returned and you can get a decent deal on lift components. Worth a shot anyhow.

I have not checked with them yet...

I got the ok from the wife, but i need to decide if i should do an add-a-leaf, or shackles. I know my rear leafs are kind of saggy, so im not sure which one i will get more benefit from.

Im planning on ordering a lift this weekend, if not today. I just need advice on which to go with

If you're springs are already weak I wouldn't be putting shackles in. You can get 3.5 lift springs from IRO for $320. I'm sure you could find them cheaper somewhere else with a little looking. They're local that's what I like about them...

My first Jeep I did add leaf and shackles and it worked. I really should have done a full pack but I could not get the front bolts out on the leaf springs. That whole kit at that time (4.5" with add leafs) I think cost me like $400.

This guy posted up on the local forum the other day. It seems like a great deal, but thats a ton of lift. I dont want to have to deal with transfer case drops and pinion angles and longer shocks and all that... This is a $200 Jeep after all lol. That and my winter tires would look silly with that much lift hahaha. I was considering it though.

You should be okay with that combo. XJ's are 1/2 " higher in the rear to begin with. I saw that on MN JEEP. That's a decent deal and to be honest you might not need to drop the t-case. It's recommended but sometimes if you don't have driveline vibes you can get away with it. In any case a t-case drop isn't a huge deal.

The only other issue i see is...........

If i go more than 2", im going to need new shocks, along with whatever else i find while im in there lol. Then i go from spending $100 on a shackle lift (and replacing shocks in the spring), to spending $200-$300 on a giant lift, buying new shocks, and then needing new tires because id be too tall for my current shoes lol. Next think i know ill be $1000 into it.

Yep, i think i know why the rockers were replaced! Some angle welded over that section would be a good idea to keep it from getting too weak. Doesn't look too bad but as someone who has a jeep from the rust belt it will grow.

Lift looks good though. And i bet you've greatly added value by making it more aggressive. :D

Yeah i will probably end up welding something up over those spots, and ill probably do that small spot in the rear at the same time. I still have to figure out the shocks, i can replace the fronts easily enough, but the rears are going to suck since the bolts didnt break, they just spin. Ill also have to drive it as soon as im done and see if i need to install my t-case drop right away or not.

But at the end of the day, its still a $200 Jeep that i have $640 or so into (including the purchase price), so if it lasts the winter ill be happy lol.

I took her on her maiden voyage after the lift tonight. I don't have any vibrations or anything like that, but I did notice an occasional growling noise, almost like a bad wheel bearing that seemed to be coming from the rear/middle. I'll have to inspect that further this weekend. Maybe I need to do the t-case drop? Who knows....

I also replaced a bunch of AC o-rings and charged it back up. I'll find out if it's holding or not when I take it hunting this weekend.

So far so good though. I put about 20 miles on, and I'm at 34 in the front, and like 33 3/4 in the rear, and it no longer nose dives every time I hit the brakes lol.

I also noticed that since the lift, I get a humming/rumblestrip noise from the rear when I let off the gas. A quick Google search seems to lead me in the direction of me needing to install my t-case drop in order to remedy that.

She got some more shake down time today. Still no deer yet, but hopefully in the next week!

And I have 150 miles on it or so since the lift. Im still 3/4 shorter in the rear.

I think I fixed a major leak today. I was checking the trans pan since it was leaking all over the place. I checked the bolts, and they were ALL at least 3/4 turns loose! Half if them wouldn't even get my ratchet to click when I spun it, they were that loose.

So I snugged them down on the cork gasket, and cleaned off the trans fluid that was coating the entire underside. Hopefully that does the trick! It's got some other leaks, but that was by far the worst.

Well i got my light bar yesterday. But with a tired momma and a crabby newborn, i wasnt able to get started on it.

I did take a look to see where i might mount it. I like the roof idea even though it may obstruct some of the light. I was thinking of shortening the mounting brackets just so it looks a little better and sits more level with the cross bar. I would really like to avoid mounting it to my stock front bumper.

Let me weigh in here if I may Ryan. Nice score on the light bar by the way that's a good deal. Now I have a 42" bar on the roof (over the windshield, whatever) and the 20" bar on my bumper that sits roughly even with the headlights. From time to time I do use these on road, only in the country with no traffic of course. When I use these at night 9 times out of 10 I'm reaching for the 20" one. It floods out the ditches nicely and seems to me that having it down lower it actually throws a better distance that having one up on the roof.

The other thing I run into is the reflection or glare off the hood and the glass. I simply get too distracted having all that extra light up high and catching the glare. It's just too much going on in my opinion. Now when I was commuting for work and it was snowing or foggy your damn right I loved having that big boy up on top. Or even driving through fields tracking after a deer, gutting a deer, or trapping, it works great. You're handy enough to fab up a few small brackets to come off the bumper or even the grill to mount this lower if you so choose.

I'm just throwing my 2 cents in here for what it's worth. By the way, in this lovely state, I believe any light mounted above the headlights is supposed to have a cover on when not in use. Don't quote me 100% on that but I've been pulled over in your county for that reason among other things. Upon walking around my Jeep he told me to go, with a warning, basically saying my Jeep is a rolling court date. Just the way I like it!

This is great information, thanks Jake! Maybe i will go the bumper route and see what happens. If i decide to move it, a couple holes in the bumper wont bother me too much lol.

My main use for this will be close to the same as yours. Late nights on country roads, driving on the lakes in the winter, and for hunting.

I guess that seals my option on mounting it to the front bumper. Im sure it will look alright.

You do what you like but it's a heck of a lot easier to deal with a leaky bumper than a leaky roof!

I took Betty on our first family outing this morning. She did really well, and I'm finally comfortable enough with it to haul the little man around, and I'm pretty surprised with how well the car seat fits!

I'll be driving it for the next few days with the 8-10" we are expecting. It will be tested this week for sure!

I also scored some tow hooks off my brother in laws Silverado, since he had to remove them to mount the plow. I'll have to figure out how to mount them somehow.

Thats kind of what i was thinking. the 2 Wrangler MTRs are at 10/32, and the 2 Eldorado ATs are at 6/32.... Im not sure how it would handle with that combination, but its probably still worth it.

Now i need to convince my wife that this is the least expensive way to go about it since i need to get my snow tires off in the spring hahaha

It seems like it may be worth it for the wheels alone, but i will probably run the tires too, come spring.

But the 245/75/16s that are currently on the Moabs dont really seem all that much bigger then the 225/75/15s that i have on it now.... They are obviously bigger, but it doesnt seem like its much.

Most poly bushings do not require an external bushing for leaf springs. Some have an inner one though. Better call the manufacturer on this one

Well, i havent driven the Jeep in a week or so other than just moving it in the garage to work on it. So this isnt what i was expecting when i woke up this morning :-(

It looks like its coming from almost right under the battery somewhere. I checked the t-stat from when i installed a new one the other day, and it was dry. Im hoping that maybe i just cracked a heater hose or something when i was backflushing the system the other day. It has been -10*F or so for the last week, so things are probably a little brittle.

I just hope its not that stupid tube off the water pump thats all rusty......

I talked to my father in law last night. He hasnt pulled his project (The Wippet) into the shop yet, so he said i can use it to work on the Xj on Saturday. Hes got an overhead winch, torches, a wire feed welder, air hammers etc and any tool i could possibly need. So needless to say im happy that i can get it done over there.

Im planning on basically every bolt breaking. This way i should be able to make fairly easy work of the rear leaf bolts if i need to make a cut in the frame or the floor to get at the nuts, and i can heat the transfer case bracket bolts (or weld on new ones when they break). And im going to have to chisel off or cut all 4 of my rear shock bolts, since the welded nut came loose, and all they do is spin.

Plans for Saturday:
New extended shocks (all 4)
Rear IRO leafs
Rear shackles (IRO 1")
Transfer case drop
New radiator and flush the system
Maybe put on my new wheels and tires if im feeling ambitious once everything else is done.

Picture of the shop just for fun

Well, 7 gruesome hours later, she's all finished up! I ended up not needing the t-case drop, and after 7 hours of sitting, the radiator didn't leak a drop, so I'm holding off on that for now.

With the help of my father in law, we got the rear leafs replaced, and all 4 shocks, including taking care of the stupid shock bolts that just spun, and fishing in new ones. I'm glad to say, not a single bolt broke, they were all just a bitch to get out lol. I still may end up adjusting my rear shackles up since they are currently on the lowest setting. I also need to invest in an extended rear brake line, which will probably involve replacing all the lines in the rear since they are all rusty.

I also noticed that my heat still sucks. It worked well when parked, but it got colder as I got moving. So today, I made a piece of calibrated cardboard and put gorilla tape over it (for aesthetics, and to protect from the elements) and stuck that behind the grille. Hopefully that will help it slightly, but I guess we will see tomorrow.

We're also supposed to get 3-4" tomorrow, so we will see how the MTRs mixed with the ATs will work. At least they all have good tread. If they suck, I'll be putting my snow tires back on tomorrow night.

By the way, those aren't mtr's. A company that makes retreads called Treadwright sells those tires. That model is known as the Guard Dog. https://treadwright.com/

Although the design is spot on, the spacing is tighter. And I really wish they made a 33 with a 15" wheel. ;) Anyway, though that would help you find two more.

That depends on the carcass they get in. Some say goodyear, some say bfg, etc. Goodyear hasn't made that tire design in probably five years. It's actually a good thing that you have the retreads though. That way you can get two "new" tires, and they are much cheaper than actual new tires. That's why I wish they made some in a 15" wheel.

If you are on ice, matching tires are the first thing. Mud tires typically don't do well anyway on ice. Duratracs have siping, which improves that. Or, you can get a mud tire sipped at some tire shops

Yeah, living in MN i was well aware of mud tires on ice. At least it was nice enough to run them for a week. I may just bite the bullet and go with the Duratracs since i can use them all year and dont have to worry as much about it as i would with the mud tires.

That looks like a decent deal. They would look nice on your XJ

Well I did it. I picked up those wheels and tires, and also got some rugged Ridge tow points with plates! And I replaced my rear hatch struts. No more stick to hold it open!

I also replaced both my rear u-joints, the vibration is better, but it's still there...

I also picked up the newest addition to the garage today. I can finally ditch my overhead radiant system!

These are the front recovery points that i got for $25. They are made for the XJ, so hopefully the install will be pretty painless (other than my bent bumper mount on the passenger side). They will be going in as soon as i figure out my vibration issues...

I finally got my shims installed this morning. It's not 100%, but it's a ton better. I can still feel a small vibration at 20-40, but it's not nearly as bad. I still have to get it out on the highway and see how it does.

So the vibration is still there. It's not horrible, I can hear it more than I can feel it.

I also checked the load carrying capabilities. It handled it well, but I'm slightly concerned about my rear shackles. When loaded down, the rear shackles are hitting the frame. If I move my leafs down a notch, will that correct this, or make it worse?

I need to get this figured out before spring so that I can haul the camper with my family in it and I don't want to have to worry about it.

I moved my shackles down last night, so they are no longer contacting the frame. I still have all the flooring for the upstairs in the back, so I can't check to see if the vibrations are better or not with the shackles moved until I get that all unloaded. That and I hope it doesn't look dumb and sit way too high in the rear now.

6* shims may have been too much since the shackles were on the "stock height" setting. I'm hoping going up another notch will help.

My pinion angle looks better, and measures almost right on, but I'm afraid the vibration will still be there.

I also noticed it was turning over super slow. It was 0*F outside, so I chalked it up to a weak battery. $140 battery later, and there was no difference at all. I guess I'll be looking for a reman starter this week too...

So I got the 800 lbs of flooring out of the back, and this is how she sits with the shims in and the shackles on the lower (highest lift) setting..... I may need to bite the bullet and lift the front to level it out, and then either an SYE or a hack n tap....

Does it ever end??? Lol

It still shakes like a beotch, and it barely turns over now. I definitely need a starter, and maybe the hack n tap. Oh and I may need to go an inch taller in the front too lol.

I may throw the t-case drop in this weekend, just to help the issue until I can get the SYE or hack n tap.

It's getting there though!

Ryan, I almost hesitate to say this, but it looks like you put too much shim in there. Doesn't look right to me

Check out your power and ground cables before you do the starter. Even stock thy weren't all that great, and just a little corrosion inside the cable can make a huge difference.
