I finally washed the Xj this weekend, she was long overdue. But with the unseasonably warm weather weve been having, like highs in the 40s, it didnt make it out of the parking lot before it was dirty again because of all the snow melting everywhere........ I really need some flares.

Yup, I keep my tires covered for that reason. Get in enough mud and you cannot see out the side of the rig. A little more and you cannot see out the front either :D

Thats why i relocated my flares and put them back on. Although im pretty sure they are going to get ripped off before my next time out. Im either going to take them off, or invest in some new ones, although i cant see spending $500 on flares..... So ill probably just take them off lol

Well i pulled my cargo rack off last night in preparation for the winter run tomorrow. Its at a ski resort, and all the trials go off right at the bottom of the hill. Its been warm here, and not much snow, so hopefully its not too sloppy.

My only concern is my stock rear brake line...... I may just disconnect it from the axle so it has a little more room to move, until i find time to replace the rusty line and the hose with an extended one. Im also going to pull my flares off tonight, because im pretty sure the first obstacle is going to rip at least one of them off :(

Can't beat that.. Look forward to seeing the flat flares on there.. Thinking once I get back into working somewhere.. I'd like to look into either picking up a set of his flares.. or if I can swing it.. some tube flares from Dirtbound..

Well I made the 1.5 hour drive to dresser, WI today for the annual winter run with a few friends. They had a good turnout of 100 or so rigs. It was about 40 today, so the ground was mostly frozen, and didnt get sloppy until the afternoon when it warmed up. I pulled my flares off at like 10pm last night, and man Im glad I did, or they would have been toast lol. I did some of the hardest trails that I've ever done, and the Xj did great! I didn't get stuck or hung up once, and it made the trip there and back with no transmission overheating, or any issues at all! It was a great time, and I can't wait until the next event!

Well here goes nothing lol. It only took me an hour to get this far. I've got a ways to go, but so far it's not horrible. I got stuck at the point where I needed the AC line disconnect tool deal. I'll have to pick one up in the next day or so.

After having completed this job, what AC line disconnect tool is needed? Any other specialty tools needed (besides AC Manifold and vacuum pump)?

I just went to Autozone and got the 5 pack of the Fuel Line Disconnect tools. It was like $9, and there was a size in there that fit perfectly. Other than that, the only issue is the bolt on the firewall, directly behind the head. Its a pain, but youll get it. I left mine out when i was done lol.

I left my seats and steering wheel and all that in, and just disconnected everything enough to where i could ratchet strap the dash to the oh sh*t handle, and it was far enough out of the way to get the heater box out.

Well I made a quick stop at iron rock on Friday, and I got hooked up with some IRO gear, and an extended rear brake line for the Xj. I'll be putting in that and new rear lines and wheel cylinders in the next week.

Brent and the guys from Iron Rock and a bunch of other guys are going to the spring convention at freedom ridge at the end of the month, so I need to be ready!

Well i got some work done last night. I had to install the extended rear brake line, and since the bleeders on the wheel cylinders were stripped, i needed to replace those as well so i could bleed my brakes.

I got one new wheel cylinder in, and got the extended stainless line in. I had to tighten the drivers rear brake line with a vise grip, since i replaced it a year ago in the Napa parking lot and didnt have all the tools i needed, and kind of stripped it. It will work for now, but i might end up replacing it since im back there working on it anyways.

Tonight ill probably get the passenger wheel cylinder and new hard line in, and ill have the wife help me bleed them and it should be good to go for next weekend!

I also got started on my new stickers. I have a few to put on yet before next weekend.

Love the IRO rigs... Haven't seen the exo caged WJ on the IRO in a while... was probably at MOAB.. where it got damaged and in the need of the EXO in the first place.. lol Wish I lived closer to IRO and MOAB.. but I'd be broke as a joke if I lived closer to IRO.. then again, I'm more broke as is because of not being close to them... shipping is killer from them for some reason.. But either way, can't wait to have the extra cash and get some more orders from them, including some more decals... Think I have some upstairs that I still need to put on, as I was waiting for everything to be on and done before I installed the decals, I'm not a huge decal person, so am pretty selective as to which ones I run.. IRO will certainly be one since my complete LA suspension, steering, track bar is all IRO.. The Jeeps love being a never ending project for sure... I'd definitely make sure you put some kind of rust preventative/neutralizer on the rust before you plate over it..

I'd definitely make sure you put some kind of rust preventative/neutralizer on the rust before you plate over it..

Im going to just clean up/wire wheel the area, and cut out the rust and weld in new metal, the same as i did over the spot in the front.. That should do it.

Well i got my brakes all finished up last night. So i have all new hard lines in the rear, and 2 new wheel cylinders, along with the stainless extended brake line. The wife came out and helped me bleed them, now its in good shape, and the pedal feels great!

I also got my new IRO stickers on, and added my Crawl for the Cure windshield banner. Its not until July, but i figured id throw it on while i was at it.

Now to fix that damn rotted unibody...... Again.......

So today I tackled that stupid rust hole. I never claimed to have any welding skills, but there's metal where there used to be no metal, so it has to be better than it was. I'm calling it a win.

Then of course in typical Jeep fashion, my water pump went out on my way home..... Ugh.

Well tonight I started tearing into the water pump. I got the old one out, and it was stamped 3412-12, possibly the original? Maybe, especially from the looks of all the rust on that coolant pipe. I also realized how dangerously close I was to losing my belt on my drive home yesterday. That water pump was loose as a goose!

Tomorrow I'll get to putting it all back together, and hopefully finish it up. Then test drive it into the office for a day or two, and have it ready for the weekend!

Oh of course! It was squealing pretty bad, but I think the majority of it was the water pump, and the fact that the belt was only holding on my 3 ribs lol. I'll probably just keep the old one as an emergency spare under the back seat or something

Yea, that's what I did with my old one, when my water pump went out on my 98... On my 97, I cut that sucker off with a knife.. but it was shot... but was funny cause I was like I have a brand new one in the garage, where is that thing?!!! Couldn't find it so I ordered a new one with all the cooling system parts... and then once it was all back together... there's that new belt... chilling on the shelf, where I swear I looked like 20 times... so got that one under my back seat as a spare...

All in all it was a great time with great people, and we all had an awesome time! The only casualty was my t-case crossmember that got all smashed up, but it still made it there and back without any issues! Looks like ill be ordering the IRO crossmember pretty soon......

I brought the Jeep over to the in-laws this weekend, and towed the boat over there so i can store them both for a while. We are putting our house on the market on Wednesday, and needed to get some stuff out of the way for showings.

It pulled it there pretty good, and i had the AC blasted the whole time, and didnt have any trans overheating issues, so thats good!

Well I got the Xj home the other day. Time to get to work and get some things sorted before the Crawl for the Cure in July. We sold our house, and the new owner closes June 29th, and we close on our new house mid July.... It's going to be a busy and hectic couple of months!

On my to-do list:
Hook up cooling fan for my winch
Hack n Tap and new u-joints for the new driveshaft
Install my new rock lights
Install my new (used) crossmember, and maybe bend up some reinforcements for it
Source and replace front window switches

I was debating a couple inches of lift more, but I think that may be a little ambitious in the next 30 days with packing and all that :(

Well, the damage to the crossmember was self inflicted :bang: But it will be fixed soon. I just hope i can get all this done throughout the week so we can start packing up the house and garage. I cant believe we move in less than a month!

Pinkyman
06-05-2017, 08:37 AM
Well i picked up new window switches over the weekend, i also got some new rock lights, and a new (non bashed up) crossmember. Im going to get it in the garage and get started on it tonight.

And Tim from Dirtbound is loaning me his jig, so i can hopefully get going on the hack n tap this week, or on saturday.

So the little man was sick yesterday, so we had a nice lazy day at home. He took a few good naps, and I got to work on the Jeep a bit.

I got the passenger window switch replaced, and now all my windows and locks work consistently! I also got my cooling fan for my winch hooked up, and ran the fan hose, and i installed my rock lights and a new switch.

All i really have left to do is the hack-n-tap, and i dont really "need" to get that done, i would just like to get it done by the Crawl next month, then i can replace my crossmember, and get that t-case drop out of there.

Well the Crawl for the Cure was a giant success again, raising over $115K for the MS foundation!

Brents Xj didnt make it, he got it running and driving at about 3am, but he couldnt get it to shift into 3rd, so he ended up leaving it at home, hopefully to be done in the next week or so.

Jake from State Farm (AKA Xj-Jake) and his wife kicked ass in his Xj. A few dings and bruises, a ripped brake line and a broken diff cover later, we got it all fixed up and went out for more. His Xj is extremely capable, everyone was pretty impressed at what he was throwing it at, and making it through without an issue!

All in all it was an awesome weekend of wheeling, with no real casualties. I did come to the conclusion that i need lockers, and some armor, and i think ill be in ok shape for now.... I may also get the "almost alloy" caps from iron Rock, and another inch or so of lift, but well see what happens.

Well i guess i have another vacuum leak to track down. I noticed when we were wheeling last, the AC would stop coming out of the vents on acceleration, and this morning it didnt want to come out of the vents except occasionally, and it would bounce back and forth to defrost and the vents.

Im going to take a look on lunch and see what I can find.

Pinkyman

Well last night i fixed my vacuum leak, it was the tiny line that runs through the firewall by the AC lines.

I also replaced my coolant temp sensor. For the first time since ive owned it, it read over 130* lol. It sat comfortably just under 210!

I just pulled it in the garage where it was super quiet, and unplugged the vacuum line by the battery and blew into it. The line had rotted away enough that i could hear where it was leaking, then when i inspected it i saw that i was basically disconnected from rotting away.

I found out that I must have a rather large draw somewhere. When it sits for over a week or two, my battery will be too dead to do anything at all.

This weekend if i have time, im going to get the battery on the charger and pull the fuses for all of my aftermarket stuff (light bar, rock lights, amp, winch etc....) and see if that remedies the issue until i have more time to dig into it. Otherwise i may put a battery disconnect on it somewhere.

I'd say try disconnecting the winch and see if that alone will take care of the drain.. Wouldn't think the other items should be allowing a draw unless the switches for them are on, or in the case of the amp the radio is on.. unless for some reason the amp is getting a remote on signal without the radio on...

Oh shes in the garage now, so no worries there. I disconnected my winch, and the battery still died after about a week. So i will probably start disconnecting all my aftermarket stuff until i can narrow it down.

That sucks, looks like it'll be disconnecting one accessory at a time, until you find the one that fixes the drain... Been trying to keep an eye on mine, as I add new accessories, to see if I notice any drain...

I think I may have found part of my battery issue. I went to charge the battery the other day, and the positive terminal was cracked and not even tight! I have new ones coming today, so we will see what happens, then I may have to start looking for a draw.

I also scored a free neoprene winch cover from one of the local guys, and it seems to fit pretty well. That should help with the salt from the MN winters. I also finally got my car trailer home and found a spot for it behind the shop.

Well last night I changed out the cable ends. The old ones were pretty ratty. I also checked for a draw. Weird thing was, it was at 43mA, and after i pulled the fuse #16 under the hood for the (junction block, TCM, and under hood light) it went down to 0mA, and my test light went out. I put the fuse back in, and it went up to 19-20mA, which should be acceptable.

It was sitting at 12.43 volts when I went to bed last night, and i woke up to it at 12.42 8 hours later this morning. Hopefully that is an acceptable draw, and my loose and cracked cable ends were just making it act up..... Ill be checking it again when I get home tonight, and I may drive it to the gas station to fuel it up, and then i can check it again after it sits a few more days to see where its at.

I did the old Seafoam treatment on the Xj last night, and wow what a difference! It smoked to the high heavens, but it runs so much smoother now, and its MUCH quieter!

Both videos were taken when it was warmed up to operating temperature.

Heres Before:

And After:

Was that the Seafoam treatment in the gas tank or in the crankcase?

Was that the Seafoam treatment in the gas tank or in the crankcase?

I used the "directly into the intake" method. Ive outlined the steps that I used below.

I warmed it up to operating temp and then removed the air intake hose. Then I just slowly poured the seafoam directly into the intake, slowly... I used about 1/2 a can of seafoam. Then I shut it down and reattached my air intake hose, let it sit for about 15 minutes, and started it up again, and let it run at about 2k rpms for a while, and then drove it until the smoke cleared.

Well not much new here. I started it for the 1st time in a month, and she fired right up.

Im picking up a Lock-Right front locker in the next few weeks from a friend of mine, and ill be installing that and my Hack N Tap, new front axle u-joints and the "almost Alloy" kit and my new T-case crossmember. But thats all i have planned for changes this winter.

Well, I was working on the shop the other day, and i opened the rear door on the Xj to use it as a step, and i found this............. My rock sliders that the previous owner booger welded in are coming apart. Now its time to read up on some installs, and figure out if im going to do 2x4, or 2x6 for the replacement ones........

I guess its time for a good winter project anyways. Time to get to cutting and figure out how im going to tie it in to the unibody stiffeners.

Will do! I just hope I can find enough good metal to weld to..... If i can find good metal, I might just weld them on and hold off on the unibody tie-ins. The ones that were on it did fine, until they rotted off lol

Well, I went into the shop last night and took a look at whats left of my rockers. Looks like im going to have to add some metal on the drivers side in order to get my new 2x6 rockers in..... The passenger side looks like ill be able to find enough, but i may have to tie them into the unibody stiffeners.

Thats the plan. It currently has 2x3(maybe 4) rockers. But the metal is so far gone that I may need to add some before I can weld the new 2x6s in!

Well last night i replaced my windshield washer motor, since it hadnt been working for a year or so, and with driving it in the snow, i figured it would be a good thing to have.

I also replaced my roached transmission crossmember. I smashed it on a rock garden last year, and ever since i had some pretty nasty vibrations from 20-30mph. I was going to wait to replace it until I did the hack-n-tap, but it was super annoying, so I just did it.

Well im still debating a locker, but i did order the rear diff cover gasket the other day, so that should be here today.

I also 3D printed version 1 of a switch panel for my ash tray. I think im just going to add a few more switches, and print one out in black and call it good. The blue was just for trial, and because we have so much of it lol.

I also modified my bracket for my light bar. Its been crooked for a while, and i couldnt move it because my winch was in the way. I drilled a couple of new holes so i could move it up, and still be able to adjust it. I still need to do something about the "ears" on the mounting bracket.

Well I did it, with the help of a good friend of mine. We started Sunday at 8am, and they were undercoated, and the jeep was parked by 5pm.

We cut out the 2x2 rockers that the previous owner installed (which must have been sheet metal, there was absolutely nothing left of them), and added some angle iron and got the new 2x6s welded in. It was a big project, but im really happy with how it turned out. In the future, I may cap off the ends, and tie it into the unibody stiffeners, but they will do for this year. They definitely arent moving no matter what

I have though about once I get the hatched swapped back on, and have a place I can do it, that I might wash it and run a quick coat of rubbing compound over the whole Jeep... just to see if I can fix any of the fading/staining issues on the clear coat... and then I guess I'd have to run a good coat of wax on it... But most likely I'll jus stick with it as is.. LOL

Ugh... If it isnt one thing..........

On the way home the other day, I noticed some off noises coming from my steering... So i had my wife turn the wheel while i was under it. My freaking unibody cracked allowing the steering box to flex when i turn the wheel. I guess its time to look into how to fix this.. Im guessing pull the box out, and weld in some reinforcement on the inside and outside of the unibody.

Heres what it does...

Well i finally got around to plating my steering box/unibody. I braced it on the inside and outside, so hopefully that will work. My welds are horrible, but im still learning, and it still has to be better than it was, and the box isnt flopping around anymore.

I also upgraded my hauler trailer to LED lights, and fixed some wiring that the tree rats got to last winter. Finally for the first time since ive owned it, all of the lights work! I also replaced the jack since water got in the old one and froze, and made it super hard to turn up or down.

lights look good. That's why I'm done loaning my trailer, always something to fix when it returns.

Could've done crush sleeves on the gear mount area, but I'm sure it's way stronger that it was before. There's a frame reinforcement available for the steering gear side of the frame rail. I'll look for a link, but it should be easy to find. If you haven't done front stiffeners, those helped quite a bit along with a bumper up front.

Well my father and I went out for a little day trip to the Park Jeep Adventure Day weekend. My dad is friends with the owner of Park Jeep (the dealer that was putting the event on), so it was fun to meet him and hang out. It rained most of the day, which made for some super sloppy conditions, but it was still fun as always.

All in all it was a great day. I only got hung up once, but that was the only hiccup. The Xj performed well as always, although i developed some sort of a knock in the RF, that ill have to take a look at before the Crawl for the Cure in a month...

The only bad part was when I got home to wash it... I noticed that I can see almost all of my carpet from underneath the jeep. The rot seems to have gotten to it... Im going to be bringing it to the Crawl for the Cure in a month, but im not sure what direction im going to head with it after that.

Well, I think the time has come....... My Xj may be up for grabs after the Crawl for the Cure next weekend.........

The good news is, that IF i do sell it, it will be to buy a newer replacement. A good friend of mine is selling his, to upgrade to a Rubicon.... He has always takes care of everything he owns, and doesnt mess around when it comes to upgrades on things, so i have absolutely no issues buying a vehicle from him.

His is an 01 solar yellow, original owner, with 120k miles on it. Its got a 5.5" lift, 33s, new AC parts, new heater core, new springs and shocks, rock sliders, extended brake lines, shackle relocation boxes, underbody skids, 8.25/D30 with a rear locker, new Tom Woods driveshafts front and rear, SYE, on board nitrogen tank, front and rear armored bumpers, and a bluetooth stereo with infinity kappa perfect speakers ($499/set x 3 sets...) in all doors and the rear header, with a 10" Alpine type R subwoofer in a stealthbox, and it sounds like a concert hall. The best part, its not all rotted out like mine lol. Its rarely been driven in winter, and only has some minor rust on the passenger door. He will be keeping his winch for his new one, but im not concerned about that.

Hes giving me too good of a deal to pass up, and the wife already ok'd it. Shes ready to have a more reliable Xj that we wont have to make monthly payments on lol. If/when this happens, it will be in the next few months, and im sure ill be starting a new thread on it
