Howdy ya'll. Jamdeeper here, and I may or may not go all out on this, here build thread..

To start off, I came across the page from listening to the podcast (in which I never thought I’d listen to (for the mere fact that i had no idea what good podcasts were)) but here I am-- after one day my brother had asked me if I listened to podcasts.. Quickly answering "na man- aint nobody got time for that!" now that’s really all I do throughout work and my commute. I've gone back to episode 150? I think that’s all iTunes goes back.. But now I’m on ep. 177, and moving up to current ones-- Although, I do peep the live show now on Thursdays. ANYWAYS.. I've been on forums here and there, and I do have a build thread on Cherokee forum (that I may be copying things from) but I also want to start from the beginning and pull up as many pictures as I can to show you guys where it all started, and where I am. I’m hoping I can even catch up to present day.. I have TONS of pictures and plenty of awesomeness I’ll need to sort through to present to you guys.

For starters, we’ll go back to when I bought my first Jeep in 2009: a 1989 4 door XJ. I was the 3rd owner—first was a grandpa who kept it stock, and did all maintenance through a dealership and finishing his ownership of it with an engine rebuild.. Next went to a guy who turned it into a pavement princess. With a 4” lift and 33’s with a short arm kit, there was no intention of taking it offroad; until I bought it. :bacondance:

Growing up; my dad had a couple jeeps, so when I bought this, it just felt right. There were very few things I’ve done to this jeep, even to this day. It will start everytime I turn the key (maybe needing a jump, because I hardly drive it now). It has NEVER broken down or left me stranded. It was definitely my first baby. I have taken it to Moab once, and many trails here and there. And I can honestly say, this is where it all started.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/703/20478171263_cfaa71caaa.jpg

When I bought it (in high school) it was my daily driver, so I had to keep up on all the attention this old (older than me) hog wanted. I tried to keep it looking good, as it was very impressive for the year it was. It was originally blue, and painted black by the 2nd owner. The first thing I did was have the windows tinted, because it just looked so clean with the all black look to it. Owning it for about a year, I had gotten pulled over about 12 times for various things. Finally the HP decided to revoke my registration with a ticket for 8 violations from mudflaps to tinted marker lights. BOGUS. When I had fixed all the issues, I had to rebuild the front end (joints/ends) to pass safety inspection.

One day driving it, I had some electrical issues along with a very smokey, tire skidding ordeal that ended up being a burned out ignition switch. Growing up, and learning from my dad, I am one to want to find the issue so it doesn’t happen again. It was not until about 2 moths ago that I actually found out (I think/hope) what the issue was. Initially, I had thought it was the PO’s excellent wiring job on the stereo where he had grounded out the dimmer wire behind the deck.. but I could still feel the switch getting hot on long drives. After researching it one day, I found the diagram to all the things that came from the dreaded brown wire on the ignition switch. Not thinking too deeply into it, since all of those things worked without issue.. except my door locks (which leads from the brown wire on the switch) still, not thinking much into it, because.. hell… it’s an 89 and there are plenty of other jeepers whose doors don’t lock (researched that too).

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/702/20912421599_0cb359215b.jpg

It was a couple months ago, I took her for a spin around the block to wake her up. When I got home I rolled up the windows like a normal ride, when POOF… Smoke. And lots of it. Panicking I ripped the whole panel out of the door to find the switch assembly charred. On the older styles, the plugs to those switches are molded into what looks and feels like a hard rubber.. which apparently burns pretty well.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5723/20478151923_c9eab1e406.jpg

Other than that, I’ve replaced the water pump, and the clutch master. Along with basic maintenance. This thing has gone above and beyond being an awesome rig.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/731/20912422919_5ae86059d8.jpg

After 2 years and many beatings, I could not get it to pass and state tests and became so frustrated with it. I had not been on any forums at the time, so it was usually me and my dad trying to get it to pass so I could drive it. In 2011, I got a new job that could help me in buying a new vehicle. With that in mind, and the fact that I was tired of driving around on temporary registration and already having deathwobble like crazy, I decided to scope me out a new vehicle.. It took about 3 months to find something I liked, that was still in great condition.. But we’ll get to that later.

It had soon dawned on me that I no longer had a need/ want for the 89, and had put it up on local classifieds.. To have a guy want to trade me for a 99 polaris RMK.. Okay, cool deal. Had fun with that. It ran great.. Used it one winter and realized I didn’t need that either.. Scoping out the classifieds.. guess what I came across??? MY JEEP!!! FROM THE SAME GUY!!! NO WAY!!!-- Jokingly, I text him asking if he wanted to trade back—what do you know.. He was totally down for the old swapparoo!! He had replaced the front coils and lower control arm bushings on it and it drove extremely solid! I was stoked! I still am stoked! It was just then; I realized how much I missed that damn thing. It really was, and still is my pride and joy.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5632/20476630604_fc2f7236c1.jpg

This brings me to my 2011 purchase of my next Jeep.. I purchased it with 123000 miles one it. A 4 inch lift, 31s, roof rack and spare. At the time I was still very “rookie” to the jeep game, for the fact that I never really had to do much work on the 89. So I was excited to have a drivable jeep again, that was newer and had less issues. This jeep became my daily driver with a 70 mile daily commute every day to work. I hadn’t done anything to it until I decided to take it down to Moab in 2012, when I decided to take all the “goodies” off of the 89 and put them on the 00.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/662/20478146633_3207de7baa.jpghttps://farm1.staticflickr.com/601/21106909711_59c445b197.jpg

It performed very well in Moab besides the fact that I had some cooling issues on our 9 hour trail. The issue was (Now that I’m a little more educated in the jeep game) vapor lock.. every time I’d shut down on the trail with it warm, I would turn it over to find it putting and sputtering until all the hot gas was gone. Then it would run fine, but still very warm.. I look back today and wonder how it made it the whole way, but like you all know, these motors can take a beating.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/630/21099211985_e89ac46136.jpg

It was winter, early 2013 that I started having more cooling issues. I had noticed a small leak up front and ended up replacing the water pump.. still having the leak.. as an rookie, I kept on driving, not having a clue what the repercussions would be. I had looked and looked for where the leak was coming from, only to decide it was the 0331 head “crack” that I had started reading about. I then soon parked it and SLOWLY began to take things out for the fix. Before taking it apart, I had bought a rebuilt, remanned, welded (in the crackable area) head off of eBay.. Now I cant remind you enough (or myself for that matter) that I was so “new” at this Cherokee thing, even after 3 years of fiddling with them. That I thought it was the best choice.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/757/21106914241_3137dd86c8.jpg

It took time, and patience to do this job. And I know now, that it took TOO long. Upon taking things out slowly and carefully, since I had never been this deep into a vehicle before. I had finally got the head removed.. I was relieved.. After having it out and being excited to almost have my jeep back on the road, I decided to clean up the oily 14 year old engine.. And that is when I found this.. a wonderful crack right behind the water pump up to cylinder 1..

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5638/20476631054_2ae4afb781.jpg

I was torn. This was my new pride and joy. And there I was staring at the Grand Canyon in my engine bay. I have heard of other blocks doing this after reading up on it, but was so lost as to how it could happen.. I still don’t get it. I lived in a townhome with my girlfriend and no way get my jeep to my dads for access to tools. I soon bought myself a 172 pc. Kobalt tool set, deciding to dig in and hoping for the best doing little things here and there to give it a little love.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5737/21099212105_69fb17b68e.jpg

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/595/20912421649_2e5cf868f4.jpg

By the end of that year, I had done it, I had taken the motor out, and had it on a stand. With eyes open for a similar year block I finally came across the deal I was looking for. A 99 block with EVERYTHING but the head for $60!!

Here I am, with a good block and a bad block. And hopes for the near future. And soon find out that I am going to be a dad.. OF TWINS! It was the best news I’d heard in a long time and I soon found myself straying away from the jeeps (this is around the time I had traded the snowmobile back for the 89).. There was actually a time that I had both jeeps up for sale, asking the bare minimum for each of them.. I had given up, since there was SO much work to be done on them. I soon realized that I was absolutely insane for doing what I was doing.. I finally pulled my head out of my ass and buckled down. Knowing that one day, I’ll be teaching my boys to work hard, and always give 100%. I had started working more and harder to support my family.. and had finally saved up enough to get the engine rebuilt from top to bottom and have the new head tested and installed.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5698/21073017636_746e87547b.jpg

In the meantime; waiting for more money, i had done a few little things, like paint the engine bay, and swap out all the interior lights with white LEDs. Just to show her a little appreciation.

My boys were born 2/2014. And we decided to move into a bigger place that had room for 2 of everything.. including jeeps (there was a shop).

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/736/21073018816_1c3ffdddd5.jpg

It was February 2015 that the family decided to go down to Moab again for a family trip. There was NO WAY I was going down there without this jeep. The trip was the first of april and I had about 50 days to do what needed to be done.. And this.. is where the fun begins. With the past 2 or so years of reading forums and following social media sites, I had my eyes set on things that I thought I might as well do while I was installing the motor. As you’ll see…

After getting the new one on, she fired up again and purred like a kitten. Next addition was tires and trimming fenders, shocks, cool air, and sliders.

Moab was an awesome time. as always.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to complete everything I wanted to do. I came back and saved for a couple of paychecks to soon buy some extended brake lines and new leafs. It was definitely time. Also, I noticed a slight knock at idle and park.. come to find my flywheel was loose. Because dummy, me, forgot to Loctite them. (still learnig) I have since torn it out and checked for cracks and reinstalled with Loctite.

Here I am today, writing this with so much more knowledge than I had 5 years ago when I had bought my first jeep. It is not just a jeep, it is a lifestyle, and it has change who I am and who I will be as a person. I hope to one day let my boys drive my jeeps, to teach them that hard work and patience will always pay off.

Here are the jeeps toady. The love (and hate) will never end. But the success of keeping them alive always pays off.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5779/21089142242_955a999548.jpg

I hope to one day save up enough time and money to get the ol 89 back on the road. but for now, i've very happy with the fact that it still runs.

If any of you are interested, I have created a hashtag for my 00 Cherokee build challenge. #MY00CBC… I still add to this as the challenge is never over.. Also, i just posted up a walk around of my jeep on YouTube. youtube.com/jamd33per

I hope to keep you posted on these things. so i can look back and remind myself where i started.

Next project will probably be my $30 hack and tap that i swooped up

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5687/21106916031_e2141219d7.jpg

I'm also needing to do a little front end maintenance. i'm getting quite the shimmy up there.

My eye is also on the prize for one of those rooftop tents, hoping to get the overlandish vibe going on so i take take the fan out camping and not have to bum room in someones trailer and feel bad when my boys start acting up. the list goes on.

Great story! I too got my jeep in my teens, 16 to be exact, and learned on it over the years I've owned it. (Still can't believe how little I knew back then)

Look forward to seeing more of the build. Really enjoy the overland XJs.

Great post and really liked how you started listening to podcasts. Put that into the show notes for ep.192. Thanks.

I have a question! The picture of the silver jeep with the camper in the background, is that your Jeep? Was it for sale on CL in Colorado about 2 years ago or so? If it is the one I'm thinking of I damn near drove out there and bought the thing.

Wasn't me. I've owned it since 2011. And only had it for sale in Utah for about a week. Then Realized that was a big mistake ha. Glad I kept it around. Can't believe how much I've learned and how far I've come with it.

So here I am after a fun wheeling trip; with my valve cover off because of a cylinder misfire. Stuck valve. Awesome. What is it with my luck?

Just listened to ep. 193... Again. Bringing me back here; after listening to you mention this post. Just wanted to revise something in my post. After talking the valve cover off to diagnose my misfire (collapsed intake lifter). Come to find out, I had replaced my stock head with a TUPY head. So I look back now and realize I must have done my research. Just wanted to throw that out so hopefully I won't ever have to worry about it.

I'm hoping to dig into the lifters this weekend. Hopefully my cam isn't roasted. The shop said they would replace all bad parts, so that's good I guess. Gotta love it.

Started tearing in the other day. I have everything off but the head itself. This really makes me sick with only 3k miles. I've taken the head off now, and have 10/12 lifters out. My "bad" lifter is stuck, along with cylinder 3 intake lifter. I'm getting kinda weary about them being stuck. It almost feels like they're "mushroomed" at the bottom. All the others slid right out with a magnet, but these ones are STUCK. They'll lift about 1/4" and stop. I'll be buying an actual removal tool and hope to get them out without damaging the bore.

Alright guys, I got a bit to dig into these "stuck" lifters.

Again, bore 5 and 10 (from the front) were the ones that were stuck.. I went to auto zone and picked up a lifer removal tool. PN27146. quite slick, as it has a slider hammer on the shaft with the expandable claw that grabs onto the lifter "lip".

Lifter "5" was my first dig, and i could tell that something wasn't right.. as it still wasn't very easy to take out.

Once it was out i could see shavings on the bottom of the lifter, and a weird wear pattern that the others didn't have.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/580/22016144932_1bcec79ce3_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/zxuuRJ)

Lifter "4"

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/727/22002250646_9f05ac696c_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/zwghz5)

Next was lifter "10".. oh boy..

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5723/21405661504_61a9f8afba_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/yBxBpo)

At this point, i can only assume that the cam is also worn down. and i'll probably have to end up ripping it out... upon further inspection of the lifters, there is something majorly wrong.. In order, the next photo is lifters are 11,10,5.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5750/21840604488_25e6e8e3d5_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/zgYNNm)

I'd say there is almost an 1/8 wear.. in less than 3000 miles... Lifters 11,10:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5819/22016145162_17ae6aaf59_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/zxuuVG)

From here, depending on how the shop treats me, is where i'm at a stand still.. i'm kinda hoping that they'll take it in and do the work since my dad has been going to the same guy for 20+ years. but then again, i don't want to run into this again in 3000 more miles.... :drinking::drinking:

Here are the videos of the cam rotation.. i'm not sure there is a way to tell with video, as i don't have micrometer eyes, but i thought i'd take them for reference. In order, bore 5,10,1.

That sucks to see that you had to pull it apart again after only 3k miles.. Hoping it is fairly easy to get her back on the road, and doesn't cost you too much more (although would hope they'd take care of things and help you out price wise)..

Ya, I'm hoping it ends up okay. If not, then it's sitting until tax season. Again. I guess we'll see what the shop says tomorrow. I know the parts are warrantied, but I want them to do labor too, since they must have done something wrong. I would understand if this was my fault, but there is nothing I could have done to make this happen.

Thanks bro. Don't know what it is with my luck. I hope the block is okay, I'm still trying to figure out how something like that could even happen.

With such a weird wear pattern. None of it makes sense. The lifters are perfectly flat.. I would think they would be "bowled" from the cam wear. I don't feel like they were seized, because it ran SO good.... We'll see.

Well, so much for that theory. It is getting hard to find oil for flat tappet engines nowadays. I use Valvoline Racing oil which has the highest mineral content of any of the off the shelf oils

Yes, I knew to get high zinc. Because it would void warrantee on the rebuild if I didn't... But then right on the receipt, it says cam and lifter failures are not warranted.. So they kinda contradict theirselves... I don't see any reason how I could grind 1/8" off of a lifter in 3000 miles... Booooo

I had high hopes for this rebuild. Like I said, my dad has been going to this guy since he was in tech school working on Monster trucks. The guy also said he's never had an issue and would stand behind his parts since he's been using the same parts since those days.

I guess I'm just lucky like that...

Considering how simple this was. I feel pretty confident in putting it all back together. Since this is about the 3rd time I've had this thing torn apart, I think I'll just need a day to put I all back together. I still plan on taking this to the shop and letting them diagnose what may have happened. I plan to clean the lifter bores and when I have the pan off (since I tore the gasket in half up front) I'll get an undercarriage look-see. I'd imagine there are shavings in and around the inside, any internal cleaner suggestions?

I'd question that "rebuilt head" more than I would question your mechanic skills. all seems to point back to that head of questionable repute. You're on the downhill side now. I'd have a shop rebuild the valves and valve seats. new set of lifters and reuse your stock cam if all lobes are in good shape.

If lobes look rough, consider a slight cam upgrade from one of many sources.

Great build! Thanks for sharing

Are you thinking a stuck valve? Bent? I am still able to compress it. And would that be something that I would notice before it ate through the lifter? I never had any tapping noises until the lifter actually collapsed from the hole. Wouldn't that cause a misfire from day 1? Good thought tho... I honestly haven't even considered it.

Is there a way to "test" the valve movement?

so each valve compresses and moves freely?

something is causing serious pressure between the cam and lifters. 3000 miles and you literally wore a hole in a lifter WITH a zinc oil additive. Not sure how it didn't run rough with 2 or 3 stuck lifters.

once you get it back together, you can crank and run it for minute or two with the valve cover off to see exactly how each lifter and valve is moving from seat to full lift and back. I realize that does nothing for your current situation.

did it get hot? block would have to warp pretty badly for lifters to get stuck and your head would toast by then. Odd situation you have here, thats for sure.
did you do new oil pump when rebuilt? if not, how many miles on stock pump?
what weight oil?

Also, very cool pictures!

Yes. All valves move freely. I could put weight on the bad one when the head was on and it would move. Nothing drastic, but It did move.

I never for a second felt rough running, didn't throw a code until it actually collapsed.

I was very cautious about temperature, but I believe in previous posts you can see the temp at the point of CEL. I believe I was running at perfect temp when it finally gave way.

The engine was rebuilt from top to bottom. The only "used" things on the block were the head (referb), the bare block (from a 99 that had blown rings in cyl. 3.)(since mine cracked), with that, yes, the oil pump was new. On that same note, I had perfect oil pressure since first crank. EVEN after the lifter went.

30w oil. Added zinc.

Thanks. I miss it. Can't wait to drive it for another 3000 miles. ;)

Ya cam is definitely bad. That's why I took it out.

I do hate to hear that, but.. it will not stop me from building it.. When removing the lifters, they would move up and down until the mushroomed end of the lifter hit the bottom of the bore. Obviously the lifters were shroomed out, causing the hard removal. And as in hard, I mean not easy...

It's not that I disagree with you, I just feel there is something else wonky... Like I said, it ran SO good, that it has to be something more freaky than some oblong bores.

Worst case, it happens again and I start building my 89. Such is life. If it's going to happen again, I can't say I didn't learn anything from it. Not sure what you call that attitude.. But that's how it is ha ha

I will do it. And of coarse keep you all posted. If I fail, y'all will hopefully learn something with me.

not to continue beating this horse, but the only thing we haven't discussed is the rockers arms. not likely to be a failure point, but how did those look on the lifters in question? we've discussed everything else in the: cam->lifter->pushrod->rocker arm->valve equation. just trying to think of whats causing your issue

jamdeeper

My rocker arms (to me) looked just fine. There were no "kinks" or anything else that stood out comparing them.

I did take the rockers off of cyl 5 (bad) rockers to compare them. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. They would float/rock just fine.

And considering the horse is already dead. I don't mind the 20 questions. I hope someone at sometime can hint something I've done wrong..

I think you mean the rocker arms. They get tightened down to a torque setting. 50 or 60 lbs IIRC, but not likely to cause an issue. occasionally, you'll have to shim a rocker arm pedestal to get your preload set just right, like if the head's been decked, using longer rockers or anything to change the stock geometry. definitely not something that would cause the lifter and cam to get into this sort of pissing match. Of course this would affect ALL lifters/rods not just 3 of the 12.

Ya I don't really have any doubt in the head. I feel better about the head after i saw the TUPY stamp. (Not that that has anything to do with what's going on).

The only thing I can think at this point is metal shavings from all the new parts got into the bores of the lifters. Not likely. But I don't know what else to think anymore.

Alright friends. So I dropped off the cam and lifters to the shop. I talked with the guy who built it and he was in actual shock about it. He couldn't believe it at through a lifter like that.

Considering that this is the first I've ever dealt with a cam, I honestly don't know what to look at. But as he examined it, he was asking me if I knew what these dings and dents were that were down the shaft near cyl 5. Obviously I have no idea what they were. And he didn't either.

Any thoughts? I thought the only thing in contact to the cam were the races that it rests in.. Nothing ever touching the shaft of the cam. I didn't notice till he asked me because I was only examining the nasty lobes.

So here we are... He said he rarely gets one back, but when he does, it's because it wasn't broken in right. On that note, he said that the bad lobes were the only ones with any sign of break in... But too extreme.

Just by him looking at it, he could see there wasn't a break in issue. So now it is ultimately up to the cam manufacturer. (Not sure where he gets them. Probably should have asked) depending on what they say, is what will happen next. I'm hoping I got a bad cast one or something. Maybe defective? I dunno. But that's that. I have him all of it to send back, so they can see the lifters too, since it's a kit.

Don't know a timeline, but for now, I'll probably drop the pan and give everything a clean and replace the pan gasket. Or will it be easier to install the cam with the pan off?

cam is a top end job. nothing to do with bottom. At least he was as shocked as we are, hopefully a bad batch of cams like you mentioned.

Lifters ride on the cam lobes. and connect the pushrod to the rocker arms, rockers work the valves. there can be some significant pressure between the cam and lifters, why proper break-in is req'd. especially if you're running aftermarket springs to keep up with a high lift cam. like .5 to .6" inches of lift. I think you have stock springs on the valves and everything else is stock, so its got to be either bad cam or bad lifters or some combo thereof.

good news. a shop trying to warranty a cam is a lot better than 1 person trying to. hopefully you'll know sooner than later whats going on. I kept looking for a reason the cam ate the lifter, but weak steel is about the best explanation I can think of.

I just thought of something. The cam is lubricated by oil being slung out of the hole on the top of the connecting rod. If a rod is in backwards, that part of the cam might not get enough lubrication. Might be worth a check

Okay, the cam is in. I smothered it in Lucas assembly lube. Very goopy stuff. I have a few questions about timing.
When I removed the chain/gears, I didn't take the chain off, so all the teeth are set as they were when I removed it. Also, cyl. 1 is TDC, but I don't know on what stroke (intake or exhaust) this may be a dumb thought, or I just don't want to think that hard cuz I'm sick as a dog, but... Does TDC really matter with the head off? I mean, if my timing marks are lined up, then the stoke will be determined once the head is on and the push rods will be in the necessary positions. Tho I believe I do have to mess with the CPS?? To adjust it that way... I'd hate to throw it all together wrong. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160131/849e052c99ed84a4b957f070b64f5490.jpg

Have 450 miles on it. Oil change this weekend with a zink additive. Still won't get my hopes up until about 10000 miles ha ha

I took out the cig tray in the center consol and installed a removable iPad stand to keep the boys entertained for the ride. You can also see the live gauge cluster up front with my wifi obd plug. LEDs all around.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160319/d024a27c0055ab28b6668810a6cf1533.jpg

Also have all my parts for the front end to get to this weekend. Not sure if I even want to do it before Moab, but probably should.

Here's a little teaser with it and my step dads 2016 rubicon on 37s that is also going to Moab. We installed the bumper and winch the other day.

Got a little sidetracked tonight and wound up installing on board air. I went to harbor freight and bought a 150 psi portable compressor and 20ft of hose with some attachments.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160320/b1b904a45f8f8b6328d3ab0bfd3b6892.jpg

I mounted it under the hood where my airbox used to be. I'm pretty happy with it. I will wire it up to a switch one day, but just hard wired it to the battery for now.

I took the 20 ft of hose and ran it along the frame nice and tight. It terminates under my bumper in one of the factory holes in the body. Should work okay, better than nothing.

Well I broke down and started on the front end. Hope it wasn't a mistake. I don't want to have to be fighting death wobble the day before I leave for Moab (leaving Thursday). But as I took it apart, I think I've found the whole reason I'm starting to get death wobble. It's not bad, just at certain speeds and hitting pot holes. The old bushings were tore up.

I've finished the drivers side, and will do passenger side tomorrow. Here's a few pics.

I did it! I'm stoked! It's like driving a Cadillac compared to what it was. The only downside now is I can feel the road in my feet ha ha I feel like Fred Flintstone the way things rattle now with my meaty tires.. Those busted out bushings were masking a lot of things. But now it drives so smooth. I hit every pot hole I could see and took it up to 65. Then hit some train tracks. I'm like a little kid.

On the oil. I went with a 10w-30 and a ZDDP additive. My oil was VERY clean and I ran a magnet through it to find nothing. I really hope it lasts me this time.

Well. Made it back from Moab. Everything ran excellent. Only issue I had was my starter wire loosened up and did the click click route. Tightened everything up and no more issues. Very happy with how it performed. The compressor was also impressive. I went from 15 to 34 psi in all 4 in about 20 min. Excellent purchase.

Definitely. Depending on how tight it ends up is whether I'll do molle straps or not. I guess I'll give it a run and see how tight it ends up. I didn't emphasize on my plan of having 5 vertical straps side to side, and 5-6 horizontal up and down. I just ran out of rivets. Depending on the molle pouch, I could hook anything I wanted to the horizontal straps when it's done. I'd imagine it'll be pretty strong once I finish it.

That is a good weight lifted off my shoulders. I'm really surprised the ujoints lasted so long ha. Next will be the steering upgrade.

In the near future I plan on one of the 3 efan upgrade with temp switch. I get a little warm at idle and my efan now is on a switch which gets hot because it's relayless (not me) I just never fixed it. So we'll see how far I wanna go with that.

Alrighty.. well the night run was somewhat a success. I left work and drive to a parking lot to meet my brother. Shut it off, fired it back up, drove to get gas, filled up, start it.. click click click....

We pushed it out of the way and fiddled with everything, no success. Took the starter out and jumped it, nothing. Went and bought a new one, threw it in.. click click click....

After about 3 hours, I found out the importance of grounding.. we ended up running a little 12g wire from the block to the battery. She fired right up.. I'm not sure which one "went out" but if it weren't for the mishap, we wouldn't have seen this:

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160722/9638d3bdfca8ca5b999c1eee17397139.jpg

It was well worth it.

Tonight I swapped out my head ground, and the makeshift one we made with some 4G cable I had. She fires up stronger than ever now.

Had a minute tonight to figure out my light bar and reverse lights. While on the last little cruise, I was using it and all the sudden went out and blew the fuse. Tried my reverse lights, same thing.

Apparently when you bundle up the excess harness and shrink sleeve it under the hood, it gets so hot the insulation melts off and all the wires short out on each other. Hmmm.

Anywho, figured that out, fixed all the harnesses and got rid of the crappy little button that comes on the harness.

Thats great! I would give anything to be able to go on an Elk hunt. Its been too warm for deer hunting in MN so far this year. Hopefully the cold will come soon, then its rut time :D

Funny story, my brother in law lives not too far from me, about 40 miles north of minneapolis. His neighbor got an Elk on his trail cam last week (they are not even close to Elk territory, like hundreds of miles away lol). They said its fair game if i see it come by my stand. They are assuming it may have escaped from an Elk farm, but still super cool to see!

That is a nice looking bumper setup... I wish I had seen it prior to spending my money on the rear bumper I picked up (the one that I still haven't gotten over a year and half after I ordered it)... not to mention I'm pretty sure this one would be beefier and sturdier and not to mention has the Hi-lift mount option... If I ever get the bumper I ordered, I might have to look into seeing if I can get the high-lift mount from this company or another.... and see if I can get it to work with my carrier..

I'll get them sanded down and repainted to brand new. Might find out what they are to get new key barrels. Tomorrow's job.

I also snagged some grand Cherokee stock roof rails, as they're about 10-12" longer than the Cherokee ones. I plan to mount them, drill the extra 2 holes and use them for my roof basket. I want to utilize all the space I have left with the tent installed. I use my basket more than I ever thought I would, so hopefully it all works out.

Switch panel "complete". I'm in the process of finishing the front fogs. It's taking time drilling holes in my bumper because I want to hide the wire the best I can. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161008/5f8129feb065227046e032de4362c1ae.jpg

Swapped out my stock rails for my junk yard find. Painted up. Mounted. Along with the GC stock rails which are much longer. Tho I don't really like how sloppy they look. The holes don't line up so I had to match drill them with my stock ones. The whole purpose was to allow me to use part of my basket for totes and other storage. It should work just fine as they are sturdy. [emoji1598]

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161008/80a8747400f78ae7e1e906433487d2e2.jpg

Now, when I want to remove the tent, I can remove the gutter rails completely, and then bolt the other pieces of my basket back on if I want to by using all 4 pieces of stock rails that I have.

And here is a pic of the other day that you can grin over.

Here we are. This kit is from amazon. It is well built, has all the hardware and template for $65 I think.

This kit is ALSO for pre 97.. so there were some work arounds as the washer fluid tank is right in the way. That being said, this is the first part after finding a new spot for a new hole.. we then cut a piece out of my old airbox to fill the old hole and silicon it.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161030/b160bddb9da6bbd36d846afccf6e2e5c.jpg

With that hole drilled matched to the template, here comes the hardest part... drilling into your fender. It is weird. But if you do it right, it is a wonderful sight.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161030/c99fa9839e2776126070fa5f0f752d79.jpg

With that, everything mounts up, and there is a bracket to rivet to the A pillar.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161030/3e2125d2240bfd0ba2159a67feb81665.jpg

My next issue is now having to figure out what I can do for under the hood by routing air "pipes" in a better fashion. As of now, I have the flex hose that came with the snorkel- hose clamped to the end of my spectre cowl intake filter. So the hose comes from clear over on the passenger side. I didn't get a picture because it's ugly, but I may be cutting my spectre in line filter out and rigging up some flex hose to it to shorten things up. This works for now. [emoji1598]

Suggestion time. I need help figuring out what I can do with my terrible shackle angle. With the weight on the rear of the jeep, I have about .5" of clearance between my shackle and unibody. It's not cool. Every bump I hit, I get a clunk. I didn't think much of it when I bought the 4.5" leafs. Because with that, I bought stock length shackles. I don't believe that's a bad way to go, but when all the weight is added on, it sinks drastically.

So. I don't want any more lift. I'm thinking I have 2 options.

Shackle relocation. (HD Offroad engineering has some no lift relocation bolt in buckets) then I can "extend" my shackle backwards to squeeze my angle in, in a sense, so I have more "shock" clearance.

Or, I can get 3.5" leafs and 1" shackles and keep the stock buckets. Put the 4.5" leafs on the 89 and make it a 6" jeep.

I think these RE leafs are slightly longer, or the weight really is just a huge factor. Here is my shackle now. I know. It's ugly.

Planning on going out thanksgiving night on a 270 mile 2 camp 3 night journey through northern Utah desert over to Nevada to find some coyotes.

The other night helping my brother with a light bar, my light bar started ground squeeling.. I couldn't figure out why, so I bought one and installed in tonight. $50. Good enough for me.

Should be a fun getaway to use the tent a little bit. I'll be back with photos. [emoji1598]

Also... driving out there, my lugs came loose. Under further investigation, one of the studs is actually snapped off of the hub???? WT...

Aye. Still grindin. Threw on my JCR kit. Rusted it out. I'm different. I'll be needing a stabilizer, it's a little wavy.

During the install I found 2 of my NEW hub studs were popped out. Had to get a new hub and lugs.

Got my HD relocation boxes today. Need to make time to get them done before Moab.

Looks like was a good time out... wish rooftop tent setups weren't so darn expensive.. then again if I lived somewhere that there was good use for one... I'd probably gladly spend the money just to be able to get out and have a getaway.... Surprised you need a steering stabilizer... I have the IRO OTK steering and don't feel the need for one, and know of a few other folks that said they like their JCR setups, and especially cause they don't need a stabilizer... Then again might be a difference in steering setup and tire sizes and such.. so who knows..

Right, I probably don't NEED one, but maybe my tires are worn weird, making it swervy... OR... my driveway alignment needs a little twice over. We'll see.

I mean I'm not saying you don't need one... if it makes it more of a joy to drive... then by all means... pick one up.. I would say get a professional alignment done, and get them to take a look at the ball joints, and hubs while there.. that way you'll know all the front end is good to go.. and not just covering anything up with the stabilizer.. just to make it more safe and good to go...

Ball joints and driver hub are 6 mo. Old. Passenger hub is 2 weeks old. [emoji1360] just gotta double check everything. Should be able to tighten it up one way or another.

Oh yeah then they should all be good.. Is it just the steering feels like it's really loose?? What kind of shape is steering gearbox in??

Everything is solid. I only feel it driving on the freeway. Like floating. Only after I changed this. It does pull a tiny bit, maybe just alignment stuff.

Haven't posted in a while. Here's some goodies I took care of.

Installed my shackle boxes. With new 3.5" leafs and 1.5" shackles. Doing so, I completely eliminated my rear "Klunk" and change the way it rides completely.

The new leafs were a game changer.

Nothing broke, and it was an awesome trip.

For the trailer, I'm almost debating on starting a new thread on it.. it will probably be a slow process, but a fun one. Here's some photos of that party.

I was lucky to snag some matching parts the other day. Even tho I'll probably color match with my jeep. Another hatch to put on the front, and some front doors to fill the gaps between the front hatch and the back doors.

I bought a new stove.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170430/4055f3592edaa348f297b97417e3680e.jpg

I changed out my rear door mini windows because the felt rail was RUSTED.

Then. Coolest of all. I finally wired up my under hood lights. I tapped into the stock gravity switch so they come on when I open the hood. Super stoked about it.

Installed more lights in the rear of the jeep. The hatch lights are more external than I'd like, so I put the same lights I used under the hood in the top trim piece of the rear hatch. They ended up being pointed a little higher than I wanted, but it's much better than before.

Finally got around to re routing my intake hoses under the hood. I ended up taking my spectre cowl intake and cutting the filter part out of it. Then took a flex tube at each end from the intake to the snorkel. Doesn't look too great, but it'll do.

Haven’t done much for a while. Had an alignment done and then replaced my track bar. Should have been the first thing I ever changed. Steering is so solid now. No wobble what so ever. Here’s a vid you can share to your poor death wobble victims.

Took er out for a shakedown run for an overnighter. Man I love this setup. The steering makes me feel like I bought a new Jeep.
