Very Kool, Like this alot. May have look into doing this and some sort of pans or trays under them

Since we are thinking outside the box now, I would like to offer another suggestion. Everyone puts their vents in the same place, which has some electrical under them. Since these can be shaped to any dimention, why not put them on the front of the hood to either side of center. There is more vacuum on that site to pull air out while under speed and is nearer the fans to expel air when idling. Also not much electrical there. That is where mine are going. Already cut the area out.

Yes, I think it was Spanky that said they need to be closer to the front if you want them to really cool the engine bay.

Can you describe, or better post a pic of your cutouts?

Ok, but I am not wanting to steel a thread here. I have been outside the box on most of my build up.

These are the only pics U have right now. The other cooler is done now. I have not made my louvers yet.

I still have a little room left under the hood, where can I get one of those?

Seeing those coolers makes me wonder. I was thinking about moving my tranny cooler from in front of the radiator/condenser and putting it in my bumper.

Do you think this would be too low and too vulnerable? I thought about putting a fan on the back of the cooler.

This is just a replica, the real ones are very pricey and under government control!

That is an interesting idea. My coolers are B&M units that have thermostats in them. One for engine oil and one for tranny oil. Cooling engine oil is a good way to reduce the heat. I think that if you protected it with some window screen that might be a good spot. You wouldn't need the fans on the highway, but off road that would work great.

I was thinking fan because that is such a steep angle. I guess I could make a bracket and make my B&M tranny cooler vertical though. Yeah I was thinking some screen material as well.

Might as well share the rest of this. I started doing these mods because I had an over heating problem going up long hills on hot days. The back of the engine compartment was getting hot enough to melt things and I was loosing head gaskets in the rear of the engine. So I am installing fans in the rear to cool the engine oil and tranny oil and push air from the back to the vents in the front. To do this, I started early when the engine was out.

The oil filter on a Chevy ends up on the middle of the front drive line. This adapter is a stock part from the S10 which has a radiator tank cooler.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/IMG_0180.jpg

I had to make clamps to secure the hard lines to the back of the engine so they would not get stress cracks.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/IMG_0292.jpg

I mounted the coolers in the hood and ran stainless lines to them. I then moved the oil filter to the hood. It will be easy to change any time now.

All that is left is a little wiring and then I will start it. :woot:

Back to the hood vents. I don't want my hood to resemble Swiss cheese, but I was thinking what are you thoughts on vents in the common location, plus to slots up front. Same place you have yours cut out.

I'm thinking that I could get two slots up close to the radiator maybe 3" wide and 12 to 18 inches long. That would let air flow better through the radiator, and the vents in the hood further back would allow heat to escape.

Dunno, just thinking.

Wouldn't hurt. The XJ just has such bad air flow. I also maintain that that long skinny radiator is a bad design. I have a Griffin radiator and still got hot just because not enough air would go through it. The vents up front are a good deal because there is higher vacuum from air breaking over the hood. They would let more air pass through your radiator. That is why I chose that site for my vents. I like the recent post on hood vents and I think I will do the same thing. That beats taking the time to make my own louvres. The rear mounted vents are good also in traffic or when wheeling and not moving very fast.

I want to say that i read in either JP magazine or petersons that they did a study where the best place for the vents were and the farther back position was best. It allows the air to escape at the place it gets trapped at under the hood.

A guy here locally took a hole saw and cut 3 holes in each side different sizes too. It actually looks kinda cool that way too. Ill try to get a pic

Mudd's correct, mine are foward, work fantabulishus! (great)

Never understood the thinking behind centering louvers in the hood....

Yup, thats where mine are going, as soon as I figure out what I'm going to use for the vents.

Did you cut through the hood's supports? I think that is one reason why most people put them in the center back.

Truth be told, no......no supports were cut........I'll attempt better pics on Friday if I remember.....(That means you should call me Mudd and remind me)

Truth be told X2: 1 guy does it, looks cool......says it works.............the sheep follow......end of storey, welcome to the interweb.

Truth be told X3: Guys like 4.3lXJ that think outside the box expand EVERYONES horizons, Innovate dont Immatate......words I've lived by for years in this trade! By the way 4.3, excellent choice of motors for a swap, wish you all the best!

Thanks. Lots of fellas just say go with a 5.7L what the heck. But they haven't put one in yet. I like this engine. When I am done with it, it will work better than factory. Next summer or so, I am going to do the heads and camshaft thing you always do to Chevys and take it to 290 hp.

Spanky,
I like the choice of you vent placement. But I've gotta ask... isn't your passenger side vent right over all of you electricals (fuses, relays, etc)?
I have the K&N FIPK so the driver side would be a problem for me either but nonetheless, they look awesome and kudos for thinking outside the box!

What size cable is that and is it the same size all the way to the front? I know you're going to say yes. Now I'm wondering how you ran it and feel confident that you won't mash it and short out the entire system.

Oh, and you said you had to go, some hot chick rolled up in a TJ topless, or something. It was mumbled and spoken in a hurry.

Ya well.........it could happen.

I used welding cable thru-out, also have a 12 volt blunt under the hood for jumping vehicals, running an outside compressor, or throwing wild party's which require 12 volt lighting........... I fabricated a channel under the body of the XJ inwhich the cables rest in, no pinching or other.....:cheerleader:

(still have'nt taken the stupid pic's.....)

I was sure you didn't have the cables just running along the bottom of the body but I couldn't figure it out in my mind how you did it. Thanks.

The quick welding cable disconnect is on my list of things to do. Hooking up jumpers to a rear battery is a pain.
