We started another project. It seems they all start with this view.

There was this one

Then this one

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/IMG_0148_zps5287de34.jpg

Then this one

And now this one.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Dark%20Blue%20TJ/IMG_1019_zpsez0yfya6.jpg

You will notice they all start in the same place :rolleye0012: At least this one came in under its own power. :bacondance:

It is going to be dubbed little brother I think. We were at a lose to know what to call it, but since it will never grow up to be as big as this one:

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/IMG_0468_zps4e3baa0c.jpg

It showed up with its 31s on it, as big as it gets for this one. But now for the specs. Original price $6000. Including the hard top worth $2000 and a soft top and bikini top. Belonged to a woman who used it as a daily driver. No mods, just a little shoddy repair work.

So in the project area it comes, with a knock that was getting worse. It had a couple of codes too, a P0300 and P0243 I think. We didn't have time for both codes, but we needed to get rid of that knock since it had to make the trip from my place to Reno in a couple of hours. So it was time to go to work.

The knock turned out to be belt related, so we got into that first. First off, we noticed the upper hose was getting ready to go.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Dark%20Blue%20TJ/IMG_1021_zps7s8nyqf3.jpg

Then there was this little gem

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Dark%20Blue%20TJ/IMG_1022_zps0euim5dv.jpg

The PO was married to an HVAC ductwork installer. Lousy mechanic. But I will have you know that is duct tape that is certified to stand up to high attic temps and never loose its stickum. I guess it is what you do when you don't know how to use a wrench. There was a comment that the father in law wouldn't let him touch anything mechanical.

Radiator had seen better days too,

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Dark%20Blue%20TJ/IMG_1025_zpswac4jah1.jpg

So we both got into it. Here is that fine duct tape coolant temp sensor

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Dark%20Blue%20TJ/IMG_1026_zpsnppkpgjt.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Dark%20Blue%20TJ/IMG_1027_zpslogzqz70.jpg

And it still worked. Amazing

So the radiator came out, temp sensor and water pump. Changed the sensor, got the radiator that was in the big brother before the V8 and snagged the power steering pulley all off big brothers 4.0 engine. Grabbed the cap, rotor and wires off it too to take care of that P0300 code. Installed a new water pump.

Alas, the kid was caught in the act. Anyone see what was wrong in that pic? I made sure to catch his arm in it. All his fault. :mock: Hint: the belt didn't fit right

Here is another pic. See it yet?

A few of the proper swear words, and then it was corrected

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Dark%20Blue%20TJ/IMG_1031_zps9on0aeew.jpg

Got it buttoned up in time to leave for the trip over the pass. Started it up and the knock was gone and we think the antifreeze leak too. There is going to be some new shoes coming, the studs have to come off at the end of the month

Nice little project Steve.

Looks like a nice project.. with not a whole lot of work needed... Hopefully she'll serve her purpose well for many years to come!!

Actually, not too much needed. This one is already a daily driver and is running well. New seats are the next project I think. We have some we are thinking about at the pick and pull

That's not too bad of a deal as far as work needed goes... There is a local guy selling one of his TJ's, and if I didn't have my XJ to build up, an/or it wasn't a 4cyl I'd probably jump on it.. it's in really good shape and taken care of, and never wheeled (actually really wasn't, not the CL version of never wheeled)... but can't handle the 4cyl part... now if it was a 4cyl CTD, that'd be a different story... lol

Yeah I hear ya on the 4 cyl. Those go cheap out here. 100K and they are done and need a motor. Plenty of them

Yeah that is one huge issue with the 4cyl versions... besides the obvious lack of power output.. lol.. If I had the knowledge and expertise to pull off a V8 swap... then maybe I'd pick it up till the engine blew, then swap in a V8... Now is this one for your son that has the other HumWee jp??

Yes, he has the HUMWEE and TJ Resurrection, so this is the daily. The other TJ will see some work shortly. However his daughter is getting her license in three months and has her eye on a CJ5 with a V8, so we will see where the money goes

Nice... and def say he raised her up right.. Can't say I blame her for wanting a CJ as a first vehicle.. Has she already found one, or she just wants one?? I'm sure you'll hook her up right either way!!!

4.3LXJ
03-24-2015, 12:21 PM
No, they found one. 55 CJ5 with a 283 V8, three speed, probably stock and Warn overdrive. No top, but decent paint I guess. She originally wanted a DJ, glad we got her off that. We told her we refused to work on that. But it will be a nice addition to the stable

03-24-2015, 12:25 PM
Oh come on... don't dash her dreams!!! LOL... Nah I think a CJ would be a much better choice and she'd like much more anyways... She looking just to have a nice vehicle to drive and take the top off on nice days?? Or she looking to wheel it one day??

4.3LXJ

She has done some off road driving already. So yes it will probably be wheeled

The new fender flares I ordered 3 weeks ago finally showed up. I live an hour and a half from the rubicon trail and 45 min from foryce creek trail. The local CHP love to hand out fender and mud flap tickets to the 4wds. I have already been pulled over for it the YJ. I will gladly pay $200 for flares instead of $400 plus for the ticket. Will post pics when complete.

She wants daily driver with teen age coolness factor. However since I am paying for her first vehical. It has to meet dad approval. Rule one has to be 4wd. We live in the mountians and it snows. Rule two can't be a complete piece of junk

Update, we rebuilt the transmission. I added hood louvers to it. I have taken 3 road camping trips across the United States in this jeep. With the exception of the water cooler if it didn't fit under the tonue cover we didn't need it. As of July 2017 the kid and I had tent camped all 48 continental states in a jeep. I do plan on driving to Alaska at some point, however driving to Hawaii is clearly out of the question.

Hey dad, you still have my factory service manual. What are the torque specs for the head? I plan on replacing the head tomorrow and would love to get it right the first time. Honestly I am just lazy and don't want to do it again.

Thank you, I will try to be there tomorrow. I got the head swapped out. It idles much better now. Cleared the check engine light, hopefully it stays off now and no more over heaty jeepy.

I was happily working on my Dana 44 build, progressing nicely, going to pick up my Detroit locker from the machinist so I can put JK gears on it when my son shows up and said "Dad, I need to get rid of this turdy five and put the 44A in. Then he said, Dad I would sure like to put a 4 inch lift kit on it." So I took a hiatus from my junk and worked on his. We got the rear ends out, ordered some builder parts which make it convenient for me and we plan on finishing it next weekend.

Why go with a 2" lift when you can go 4" I always say!
