Yes you heard right.. I will be switching from my 94 XJ, into a new 2015 jk unlimited rubicon. Why you might ask? Well even though I think my xj is reliable, my wife on the other hand thinks not. I really think she wants it for herself but I'm not going to argue. So what's going to become of my beloved xj?
WELL WHAT DO YA THINK IS GOING TO HAPPEN! YEP... Everything I've always wanted to do but couldn't because of it being a DD, HA!

Anyway on with the questions on jk's..
First. WHAT do I get? This is a whole new jeep realm for me and I have know idea where to start. Besides me wanting it to be 4door, black and a rubicon. What else am I looking for that will suit me? I don't really care for nav and fancy buttons. And I don't believe in pavement princess.. Yep probably going to put some scares in her the first week..

My vision for the jk will be at least a 4in lift, 33/12.5 tires, winch, bumpers fenders, ect..

So if anyone can point me in the right path for a great jk. It would be a great help. Thanks

With a 4" lift you can run 35" tires or possibly 37" tires with trimmed/flat fenders. Can probably run 33" tires stock or with 2" lift.

Tammy, JeepMomma.com, had a 2012(?) Sahara but loved off road so much she traded it in and bought a 2014(?) Rubicon. Black, 4 door. It really depends on the long term plans for the JK. If you get the Rubi you'll have Dana 44 axles and selectable lockers. You'd be good for 35's at least, perhaps more I just don't know that much about JK's. Now if you think you'll want to do 40's etc... then get a cheap non-Rubi that way you're not wasting money on axles and lockers that you'll be taking out later.

After listening to a couple of podcasts and Tammy's story I would seriously consider the Rubi. One guy was able to get his for $35k

Oh you might check to see if they have different diff ratios available if you're going with 35's.

The JK Rubi comes with 32" BFG mud terrains standard. Only tire in the old pattern made currently. If you are considering a used one, you will notice a real horsepower difference between the 3.7 minivan engine and the 3.6 current engine. The old engines were not enough for the increase in size and weight.

My boss's rig, Lizzie. Maybe you can find some inspiration.

37x12.50 tires
Custom Teraflex long arm kit
Reiforced frame
RIPP supercharger...
Aftermarket exhaust (i forget which)
Selectable lockers front and back
Lots of rigid LEDs
Smittybilt xrc armor
JW Speaker LED headlights
There is other stuff i'm sure that i don't know about

Super fun rig, especially with the super charger. Great road manners, quiet (not including exhaust), drives straight, easy to steer, etc.

The 4 doors are so nice, has plenty of room for storage and people. I wouldn't mind driving this jeep every day... Not one bit. :)

In that case I'm excited to see how yours turns out! He is actually running some different armor/fenders right now. Poison spider stuff with a stubby bumper and took the spare off the back. Took off a couple hundred pounds... Next time he drives it I'll snap some pics. The xrc armor looks better though. :P

They are very nice. I wheel with quit a few of them they are very trail capable some of them running 40's. The only draw back I see with them is there size. I have a TJ and have seen the JK's have problems getting through places where I don't because of the size of the TJ. I know of a JK in my area that's for sale that has evey after market part known to man including the big Hemi engine conversion for 45k. I would buy it if I could afford it and use it for a tow rig.

I think all rubis have them but make sure you get electronic sway bar discos and of course lockers. Lift and tires and you're good to go. Winch and bumpers and you're pretty much done.

Ok.. Snapping into reality.. The jk will see about 60% of the trails that I take the xj on. Like mentioned this is being purchased for a reliable DD.

My list of allowable mod (pre say the wife) will be a 4in lift, 35's a/t, stubby winch bumper, winch, tire carrier, flat fenders and a 50' lightbar. The rest will be stock. I would love to go all out on this but adulthood kicks in. I figured this would be a good round build to keep it as a everyday drive transporting the little man around and when moms not looking.. "Hold on jr. Dads taking the long way home"

I would do this without thinking in the xj but probably not in the jk. This should be about my cutoff point.

Just got back from the dealer.. Working numbers and seeing what's avaliable..

Unfortunately they didn't have a 4dr rubicon on the lot. But they did have a the 2dr rubicon. They also had some 4dr sport and sahari. So I was able to piece together an idea of what I want.. Have the dealer looking for me.

But I did find this in the used section HA!

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii559/die2end/4CAC36C7-6B24-4CF9-BF93-2A2B450C492E_zpsu2rzarmw.jpg

Oh and just look at this one.. It's a sport that this dealership takes to a local custom shop and adds this as a package.. Dealer said he sells a lot of them.. And I've been seeing them on the road locally and always wondered where they are coming from. It comes with tube bumpers, winch, 35's and two small led pod lights and a small (puck) lift.. But not for me.. He said most of the people that but this will probably never leave the pavement.

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii559/die2end/CFFA178D-AB1B-4A4C-942B-265A79AF82FF_zpsgreydtug.jpg

THIS is what I was forced to sit next to while I was doing the financing. I was in fear of my life. Even told the dealer to remove this POS.. He laughed and agreed.

So now that I'm approved and the dealer is happily looking. I'm hoping to be in a rubicon VERY VERY soon.

Have you heard of or checked out Adams Jeep (http://www.adamsjeepofmaryland.com/customizedinventory/.htm)?? They are a little bit of a drive from you, but they have quite a few modified brand new rides, and can do any customization for you all included in the purchase price.. Check out the link I put up above, and they actually have a 2014 Rubicon slightly modified for sale on there.. But they can sell you whatever they currently have modified, they can modify one they have slightly modified further if there are other modifications you want, or they can take one that is the color you want or the options you want and add the modifications you want to it... They are at least worth a try and contacting them...

If new JKs had any towing capacity I'd have one in a heartbeat

Definitely some cool rigs when built right. I've seen some really nice ones for sure. Love how much tire clearance they have. 4" lift fits 37s, something that would take a total suspension and axle rebuild on our XJs.

Yea it's crazy. Different fenders can fit bigger if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, the fender wells will accept up to a 40" tire without cutting

would love it!!

when I ordered the WK lift I also got upgraded Rancho adjustable shocks. Couple different settings on them to firm up the rear end a little. There's a tow setting and firm I think.
also will add this helper bag kit in the back. Coil sprung rear ends.....

So far they found a tank green one for me.. Wasn't to keen on the color. One of the reasons it's taking them some time to find one is that I just don't care for all the creature comforts. Apparently most of the jk come with nav, premium sound, ect ect ect.... Just don't want that.

denverd1

Nav? Isn't getting lost part of the goal?
