I have noticed like small check marks on my paint.I'm not sure if the clearcoat is failing or the base coat below the clear. If any of you guys and gals have any body shop experience or happen to be a painter please take a look and see what you think is going on.http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss179/jeepster19/342b249d2efed4acad0413c200db13d4.jpg

I had something similar. Thought somebody was keying my car, but it turned out that it was my wife's car door rubbing it in the garage :(

My clear coat bubbles…the check marks could be the beginning of bubbles but I couldn't tell you for sure.

I've really only seen the clear coat go bad on hunter green XJs…don't think I've seen it in a black one.

They all go eventually. Lost it on my dark blue, as well as my son's dark blue YJ

I sense color being the issue here.... RED doesn't seem to be failing me yet!

I've seen the hunter green clear coat go on a 92, 95, my 99 and a '00.

I'm just letting it go…one day I'll duracoat the thing and be done with it.

Did you get it repainted or did you just leave it the way it is?I stopped by a body shop today and he said it would have to be stripped all the way down.He said I'm looking at anywhere from 3 to 5k!I about fell on the ground!:bang::xj-black:

As is. I will repaint when I finish welding on it

What is duracoat?

It's a urethane based coating that was designed for firearms. It's competitor is called creakote or something similar to that which is a superior finish…just requires an oven to cure so it isn't practical for painting a whole vehicle with it.

Ive seen jeeps with a full duracoat on it, not sure if I like that so much????

Just don't worry about the clear coat.

Do this.

Wash it.

Clay bar it real good.

Then apply a base wax.

Then apply a glossy wet wax to it.

I haven't taken good care of the paint in the last 5 years.

A few weeks ago I went crazy on the paint. $75 dollars in supplies. I did all of the above. The paint, after all that wax is so smooth I would slip off the hood. Even the roof got a full wax treatment and o my goodness. The paint was telling me how awesome I was. The painted just soaked it up and I will do this again before winter. It's my new thing.
It takes hours and hours to do a good job in the shade of your garage.

Us automakers got cheap in the 90's They did not put enough clear on them and uv rays chalked the base. I loved it I made 65 grand + a year back then stripping and painting Gm cars and truck and dodge and jeeps.

My hood and roof lost it's clear coat, and mine is green.

Been trying to figure out a way to fix it. Thinking of going with spray paint, but dont really want to do the typical blk/tan satin paint jobs. Using a flat paint can hold dirt and can become dull over time from the sun.

no clue what to do so far...

For clearcoat failure, repainting is the most effective and permanent solution though pricey.

I like my factory paint I may budget for a shop repaint in the future. Itll be expensive but I'll have one of the cleanest 95s around.
