View Full Version : WJ's suck!

So I picked up a WJ a while back because I got a free good running coil pack 4.0L from a guy who did a 318 swap in an 01 XJ. WJ is a clean body body, good transmission (I know rare right) bit had the rod stretch issue and took out #1 cylinder as the plug was crushed,... Long and the short is I bought the heep for less than what the tires are worth and set a game plan to swap in the XJ motor.

So today I felt it a good idea to start on said swap and that front end is a MF'ER compared to all older jeeps, took me 1.5hrs to get the facia, rad, clutch fan ect removed to get it to this point,...

Looking at the cowl and the lack of working room I know I am in for a fight to get this hulk rolling down the blacktop again,... Sad part is it will be replacing the 93 grand that in two years has needed a alternator and thermostat. Well and it's got a oil pan leak (surprise) so you have to watch the oil level(your not my wife and can't be upset I haven't fixed that).

It has no name other than MF'er so far.

One and a half hours! Pfft, I could easily turn that into a week long ordeal!

:smiley-taunt002:

Thought about picking one up since they're almost getting cheaper than XJs. So will be watching this one closely.

Hey Jensen, I have one of those as a parts rig in the shop area. But also of interest to you I have the FSM for a 99. Just a hint on that engine, Don't try to pull the engine and tranny out at the same time, separate them. And take the exhaust pipe off too

Well tonight I was not feeling a ton motivated but I thought I would plug away on the WJ,... still a Pain in the @$$.

Decided to pull the wiring and fluid lines, AC , fuel ect and noticed when I went to pull the AC pump a boss on the block I am not familiar with,...

http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/RACE4THECURE/4831F54F-39CA-407C-9AE0-71110BE4B893.jpg

WTF! see it on the left side behind the water pump mounting area.

Day 1 3 Whiskeys
Day 2 3 beers

now to figure out how to make a way to mount the pump on a XJ block:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::bang head::banghead:

JENSSEN

Upon research all 4.0L blocks are not the same,.. they moved the bosses for the engine mounts too,... F^%@%^$#%!$%&#$!&$%

POS may just get parted.

an '01 XJ has a different block than a '00 WJ, not happy here

Which engine ya got there Jensen?

Which engine ya got there Jensen?

2001 XJ engine, figured coil pack to coil pack would be OK ,..>

I am WRONG.

AC pump I can figure out with some work but making 2 mounts for a $350 dollar Jeep is not happening,...

I may reconsider in the morning

Jensen, they came with the 4.o or the 4.7 V8. Which do you have?

JENSSEN

Jensen, they came with the 4.o or the 4.7 V8. Which do you have?

it's a 2000 WJ 4.0L , the donor engine was a 01 XJ 4.0L

I run away from 4.7's

Should work OK then. But I would suggest changing the complete wiring harness and sensors over. The ECM is different between the two rigs.

they are cheaper as they are the beginning of the end,... don't use"jeep" PARTS

Planned on sensor swaps, The physical engine block is different, no boss for the WJ engine plates and none for the AC

Didn't know that. You would think they would be the same, but then again the WJ just has more stuff

01-17-2015, 01:08 PM
That sucks to hear.. Was wondering on this before as I've seen a few folks selling WJ's with engine knock or blown engines with the 4.0.. I always thought 4.0 was a 4.0... go figure they'd change that stuff up... Wonder how hard it would be to mount an XJ 4.0 in anyways either using the same mounts, or using XJ mounts on the engine side... not sure if the XJ mounts on the block would lineup with the WJ mounts on the "frame"...

4.3LXJ
01-17-2015, 02:11 PM
James, the engine mounts are are not even close on the frame side. Great big round soft motor mount with a bolt through it. And a better mount in my opinion

bluedragon436
01-17-2015, 03:19 PM
Never looked at their mounts.. I've seen the 4.0's in the WJ's, and worked on a few for folks.. never looked at the mounts though... Will have to remember to take a look next time I see one...

OK so here is the udade on the WJ,...

So an XJ Engine will not work without huge mods, but newer Tj motors have all the bosses although they are not used (facepalm). So I pull the 2002 TJ engine, slam it into the 2000 WJ, The 2002 TJ will accept the 2001 XJ engine so I can make it all work with less money out of pocket. Just more time required to do it all.

Musical Motors,....

another reason they suck,...

look how far under the cowl the engine is,... WTF,... I need to thunder throat punch the engineers on this one!!!

I have come to the conclusion I will be pulling the Motor trans and t-case as one unit. It seems much easier as the current engine is locked up and separating the motor and trans on the floor seems much more feasible that way.

:banghead:

At least this is my conclusion for now ,.. :out:

I've read a few folks with the 4.0 WJ's that have said they've had to do it the same way when replacing the engine or transmission, depending on which in their particular situation had gone belly up, due to not being able to access the upper bolts or any other items that need to be removed/disconnected to pull them separately..

Not lucky for someone. Poor Jeep.

It looked well loved until it had a very hard roll. No one took the motor as it would not turn over. So I pulled the plugs and cranked it with a breaker bar. It shot oil out of #4 about 5'! Then it rotated smoothly, judging by the condition of the body pre roll it "looks" like it was well cared for and a lower mileage truck. Should be able to slam it into the WJ by the end of the week!!

Good find Jensen

JENSSEN
04-17-2015, 12:16 AM
Well the battle has finally began! I originally planned on pulling the entire drivetrain, I have reconsidered. Tonight I had sometime and pulled the last of the accessory brackets, and mounted the engine leveler. I then unbolted the engine mounts and removed them as well as the brackets to the block. I then lowered the engine and I do believe I created the space I need to split the engine and trans. so I think I have room to clear the torque convertor past the trans to pull the motor, as I can't remove the convertor as the engine will only rotate about 45 degrees.

more to come,..

Left to do:
-Pull exhaust
-Bellhousing bolts
-random electrical
-ground strap
-move trans cooler lines

thats all I have for today:rolleye0012:

and its hard by yourself lol

MF'er is sitting on the mounts and mated to the transmission,.. Solo this is not the easiest of tasks. Some use of ratchet straps and a floor jack made it possible!

Yeah, the good old wratchet strap. I usually use a come along on the back side so I can pull the tranny with the engine and reinstall that way. Got one in the shop now with the engine going to come out Sunday. Belongs to one of our lurking members

Got it fired late Saturday night, came up to temp and purrs,... needs to have the oil pressure sending unit swapped as it pegs the gauge, few things left to assemble.

All and all seems like a strong engine :)

Took it for a maiden voyage for a Fill of premium and a wash, it is super responsive steering wise (odd), no odd clunks or rattles yet, much faster and cushier than the '94 buuuuut it still needs:

1) Hatch struts
2) Rotors (rusted from sitting)
3) defrost button
4) CV boots/axles
4) Windshield & new wipers
5) Head lights need adjustment bad!!!

All and all its sweet for 347KM (215615 mi).

Very happy at this point, can't wait to put Steph in the Drivers seat. Ton's of bling on the interior, outside temp, direction, DTE, auto start,... not bad for $350 to buy,..

To date:

$350 Purchase
$100 Tow
$300 Junk yard TJ motor and spares
$100 Misc parts
$60 Head lights
$40 Door panel and Mirror & Misc
----------------------------------
$950 to replace the 1994 :keegirl:
