View Full Version : CB Antenna mount next to factory radio antenna?

Would this be a good place to mount my CB antenna? I was originally going to mount it on the opposite side but the GF says this looks better. Would the factory radio antenna interfere?

Being close together could cause swr to be high and it could possibly work as a director/reflector and cause your signal to be distorted in a particular direction. Just my ocd but I think the antenna on the opposite side would make it look even.

Yeah in general it's not a good idea. This is how beam antennas work, of course the elements are spaced at a specific mathematically arrived distance and sized slightly larger or smaller than the driven element.

You could put it on the same side but you would need to move it farther away to stop the beam effect and to keep the RF reflected back into the CB receiver.

Another thing to consider is having a transmitting antenna so close to a receiving antenna. It's possible that you will cause harm to your AM/FM radio over time, depending on how much transmitting you are doing.

You can try it and see, but I'd check the SWR after placement. Oh and you don't want the two antennas touching while transmitting.

Thanks for the help guys. Thought it might be a problem, will go with original plan. I thought the same thing as you Prerunner, would look more balanced on the opposite side but I have to admit it did look better on the same side as the factory antenna.

I think it would look better on the opposite side of the factory antenna myself personally.. But that is just me!!

Why not just put it center on the hood.:D

Or you could very well do that too!!

If you are gonna put it in the center of the hood.... go one better and put it in the center of the roof. :D

I think the problem is that for it to look even I would have to cut into the cowl to mount it. As it is, it is a couple inches forward of the factory antenna on the opposite side. Oh well, not too concerned with aesthetics as long as it works well and doesn't look terrible.

Oh I definitely considered it. Problem is all the trails around here are kinda tight, I think it would spend more time being tied down than it would sticking up acting like an antenna.

Here's mine. Center of the roof would have been better but IMO too high. In this picture I'm running my "road" antenna which is a 4 foot firestick. My "Trail" antenna is a 3 footer. Both have been tuned using a SWR meter and I was able to get both of them under 1.0 across the entire 40 Channel CB band.

It's not entirely even with the stock radio antenna but works just fine. You will get some "blockage" from the body of the Jeep but I still get pretty good range even out of the 3 foot antenna.

Awesome, that's exactly where I ended up putting mine. I wasn't able to get my SWR that low, but I did finally get it to ~1.3 across all 40 channels. Next time I'll buy a higher quality coax and hopefully be able to get that down a little bit.
