thanks for your time

The Cherokee is divided into 4 main groups. Renix 87-90 and they are old school without an OBD computer. You have to figure out what is the problem on your own. The second & third set is H.O. which is divided further into OBDI (91-96) and OBDII (97-99) and the final section which is the coilpack years (2000-2001)

There are two engines available for most of those years. the 2.5L 4 cylinder and the 4.0L straight six. They are available in 2WD and 4WD versions. They have either an automatic (AW-4) or a 5 speed manual (2 possible transmissions BA10-5 or AX-15).

If you have specific questions then ask as we probably have the answer somewhere among our group of members.

i want a 4wd inline 6, which is better the auto or the manual?

i dont drive that much, around 100 miles a week, but i lean more to a manual tranny

I was going to ask you about gas mileage but I think you just answered that question. I personally like the 97+ XJs and the 1999 seems to be the best year model produced. I would rather have a manual than an auto.

i would like to have a lift nothing that extreme around 3" and put some 30 or 31 inch tires on the thing

You can do that without buying a lift kit if you can get the parts there. Front coils from a mid 70s Ford F150 and rear springs from a Chevy S10. The coils are direct replacement and the rear leafs are added to the Jeep rear master leaf to add the needed height. Just cut the eyes from the ends of the S10 springs. The F150 coils ride a little rough but they raise the Jeep enough to easily put 31s on it. Monroe makes a set of shocks to replace the stock ones and are about 3" longer. You also need to relocate the front brake hose lower or replace the flex line with those from a mid 90s Wrangler YJ.
Let me know if you have further questions about this method of lift.

The Jeep will be less exspensive to mantain and toy with than the Yota,
after years of standard transmissions......I'm very much an automatic
kinda guy......their very reliable.

A 2 door would be nice. If you can post up some pictures.

That sounds like a very nice Cherokee. Once you actually see it then if it is as you were told we can better help you decide. Snap some pics if you can and post them here for us to see.

so the guy that made the offer didn't call back, today i went car scouting and found a 91 5 speed, black with tan interiors, look mostly stock, the engine wasn't to dirty, it started right up and look like mostly a city car, im going to call the guy during the week, is there any thing to know about 91's? like something bad?

Nothing bad about a 91, except is probably has a Dana 35 rear end.
