View Full Version : Are all Dana 30 yokes created equal?

Since my stock Rzeppa front driveshaft is toast I'm trying to gather parts to convert to the double cardan front shaft. Already found a transfer case yoke. And just found a Dana 30 axle yoke that's cheap. But, it's from an XJ. Is there any difference? I'm thinking D30 yoke is a D30 yoke.

I'm pretty sure they are all the same!! If you check out Rusty's Offroad (http://www.rustysoffroad.com/rustys-heavy-duty-dana-30-u-bolt-style-yoke.html), they sell this yoke for the D30, and they don't have it where you specify what model or year you have... so I would say that would affirm what I was thinking that they are all the same..

The only difference is if they use straps or u bolts to hold the u joint in

Thanks guys! I'd want to order a U-bolt kit kit for both axle yoke & TC yoke, correct? Think I read U-bolts are stronger.

While y'all are here.... :) Any idea which driveshaft I need? I havnt been able to narrow that down yet.

Are you putting in a slip yoke eliminator for the rear shaft? The front already has a CV driveshaft

No sir, working on the front shaft. My 2000 WJ came with a front DS that has what I think are called "Rzeppa" joints on both ends. I refer to them as CV joints but I guess they are ball & socket type joints. They turn to junk quickly once the Jeep is lifted. Apparently they can't handle ANY excess angle.

OK, gotcha. You will need the standard D30 yoke with U bolts if you prefer. You will need the CV yoke for the tcase. I believe it is the same spline as the NP231 yoke. I had both cases apart and did not count the spline, but just at just a casual glance the spline count and bearings etc looked the same

Thanks Steve. I've got the D30 yoke off a 99 XJ on the way. I already have a tcase yoke off a 97 ZJ 242 tcase. And my tcase is a 242. I think the tcase yoke is a straight bolt on but do I need a new crush sleeve to install the D30 yoke? Or just bolt it on and crush the existing sleeve just slightly more than it is now?

You can sue the existing crush sleeve. Make sure you don't get it too tight. Rotational torque should be as follows from the FSM for a 98 TJ

Read rotational torque before removal of yoke and add 2-5 nm or 15 - 35 in. lbs.

Correct me if I'm wrong. A yoke that uses straps can be converted to using U-bolts by just buying the u-bolts. :rolleye0012:

I've never done it but the holes on the Dana 30 yoke just needed to be drilled out for the u-bolts. Although i would imagine this would weaken it slightly.

It can be done, however the space on the back side is not necessarily flat, but cast. It is better to get the right yoke. If you need a source, try Tom Woods drive lines, Advance Adapters or Partsmike.com

You guys are right. It can be done I guess, but I don't feel good about its durability after drilling. The u-joint style yoke I got for the Tcase has much more beef to it. Going to order the right one.
