Some of you saw my recent post on wrapping your oil filter with a magnet for a little better filtration, so I figured since I'm doing an oil change today I would build a new one and post it here for everyone.

Go get yourself all your oil change parts and then find a strip magnet, I was fortunate enough to find one off an old work truck that will work nicely. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/27/2anujy2e.jpg

Measure the circumference of your filter and the height of the flat spot on the side of the filter. In my case it was 2 1/2" x 12". Don't bother covering the top of the filter that has the flats to use a wrench to remove it as that will just catch dirt and not really help to attract particles in your oil. Then cut what you need out of the strip magnet. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/27/hehyru4y.jpg

Now I'm a picky pookapotamus so I even removed the wix sticker from my filter so that it does not lessen the magnetic force from the magnet. This could just be me being anal. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/27/4unu5eqy.jpg

Then wrap the filter with the magnet and secure with a band clamp, again I was anal and used 2, and then trimmed the excess. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/27/hajeharu.jpg

So that's it, install the filter and finish your oil change!

In a couple of months when it's time to change my oil again I will cut open this filter and post up the extra filtration, if any.

And remember to lube the oil filter gasket and don't over tighten when installing!

Thanks for the info and pictures. I had pictured a different type of magnet entirely when you told us about it

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4 because my microwave couldn't do it

What a good idea! I guess those of us in the U.S. or other countries are s.o.l. though.

Any magnet will work, rare earth would be best but this is easy to strap on, and cheap!

Why would any other country not be able to do this?

Pretty sure he was just joking because you used a CAA Alberta magnet. I'm very interested in seeing the oil filter cut open after use. Think I will do this next oil change.

I figured that was it.

I took pics of the one I took off that had no magnet on it to compare to when this one needs changing. Plus I had to destroy it to get it off any way!

Yes, I wasn't serious about us foreigners not being able to do it.

C'mon Brasscatz .... show us the piccy of the doof doof speaker, you duct taped to your oil filter ... after Pook mentioned the idea the first time .. :smiley-taunt002:

:D:D

Clock up some miles quick Pook .... I would like to see the dissected filter too ..

I was thinking more along the lines of one of these...

You guys are missing the boat. Cow magnets are the answer :D

The designer in me was thinking of an electromagnet wrapping.

That's not a bad idea.... I wonder if you should market that. Create an electromagnet oil filter that plugs in to a connector or something. Maybe even some sort of sleeve to go over the filter. Bet you could do well with that.

The problem with that is when it turns off all the particles go back into your oil, it would have to stay on all the time

So here is the old filter

And since mort is in pieces I figured I would cut the magnetic one apart and see if it's working, it's only been 1500 km's but what the hell. I did good though, I should have taken the magnet off after I cut it apart, and should use something that does not create fillings when doing so.

You can see lots of grit in the oil, but methinks I need a stronger magnet.

Pook, if you're looking for stronger magnets, Lee Valley sells a few rare earth magnets. Most of my larger rare earth magnets I've picked up from here:

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/

Some of their stuff is awesome, and truly scary. I have a 1"x1"x1" N52 from them, and it has 94b's of pull strength! Very dangerous.....lol. A smaller one or strip might work great. Something like a 2"x1/2"x1/8" strip would give you over 14lb of pull for less that $5. Just a thought.

Going to pick up 5, 1" x 1/8" rare earth magnets each has a 30lb pull! That should do it! 😎

Picked up the new magnets today, $14 at Lee Valley, man are these things strong! Can barely get them apart! I'm figuring one on the end and 4 around the circumference, if I can keep them in place long enough to tape them in place, I think duck tape will have to be the weapon of choice in this instance.

My wife dropped on on our kitchen floor and it slid over then stopped, good way of finding the nails in the floor. 😳

Ok so here is what you need for generation #2 magnetic oil filter:

•New filter
•5 - 30lbs pull neodymium rare earth magnets
•hello kitty duck tape

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/04/7910262fb096adad209a8613fc868614.jpg

Now the first thing you're going to say is "does it really have to be hello kitty duck tape?" Yes, yes it does!!! You see cats get static cling in their hair and that helps attract the carbon particles in the oil, trust me it's scientific!

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/04/751f0bf84ef4ed102647ea8e691d1b81.jpg

Place the magnets in a nice pattern around the oil filter.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/04/645c4edf960e39226ab88465b126a0a2.jpg

And then hold them in place with the hello kitty duck tape, hopefully this works better than the strip magnets, will be changing my oil soon when the break in period is done and I will cut apart the filter and see.

It will have to work this time Dana, the tape guarantees it

Update time! Break in period is over it's been around 500k. So tonight I changed the oil and as promised cut apart the old filter with snips and left the magnets in place.

As you can see this time with the rare earth magnets this worked great! Now I'm pretty sure the paper filter would have caught a lot of the bigger pieces, but in the last pic you can see quite a bit of smaller pieces that might have passed right through.

Now I am planning to go to a .3 micron reusable filter in the future but still plan to incorporate these rare earth magnets some how.
