Are you talking about the little pcv valve elbow? Yes, you need that.

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4 because my microwave couldn't do it

My 96 has two. The one on the rear of the valve cover is a pvc elbow. The one in the front is called a breather. They are both about 5 bucks from Orlilley's
The one in the front goes to the airfilter box and the in the rear goes to the intake.

If they're as old and brittle as mine... there's no way to get em out in one piece. I had to dig them out with a screwdiver.

Running the engine for a bit helps ... to soften up the rubber ... but usually it goes as nickyg described.

I have never changed either of those parts on the valve cover. Is this something I should change?

In my opinion, They're cheap and easy to replace.. Why not, besides new parts look cool. I couldn't even blow tru mine
Checkout my link of when I changed mine.http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php...ht=idle+solved

They vent the engine fumes into the air cleaner. If they get plugged, you will use lots of oil. It will blow by the rings and out the tail pipe. If the rear one gets plugged, it will spit oil into the air cleaner

Not sure on these, but they typically rotate 90 degrees to pop them out.

So turn them 90 degree and pull up, hmmm. Maybe I will change both this weekend.

Found this video. I wonder why they are so hard to remove.

you can always put filters on these each top.
its crank ventilation. its for emissions and crank pressure.
the intake air pressure creates vacuum. pulling crank pressure out.
can always make a catch can. with a turbo setup always had to figure out a catch can setup..dont want boost going into motor ..
