The two holes in the top pic are for a cover panel for the fuses/relays. I'll see if i can find a pic of my brothers.

I can't really tell much about the bottom one.

out of all the 96- XJ's I've ever worked on or seen in person or even online I don't know if I've ever seen that darn cover... Darn the weak link, just fabricate a new cover for it that won't randomly disappear... Hope you are able to find a replacement cover for your XJ..

Oh thats an easy one.... you have the back to the future edition, they usually came with markings that fade over time, and mounting options for a flux-capacitor.

Wish I had that edition... so I could get it up to the mandatory 88mph and go back in the future, to before it started rusting and do whatever could be done to keep it from rusting, or at least from getting too bad... Or at least to where the doors would not be trying to fall off the A-pillar.. LOL

Sorry i didn't reply back, but it wasn't due to lack of effort. I scoured my gallery and no luck, and turned to Google which come up with nothing. So, i will talk to my brother and i'm sure he at least has a pic of the engine compartment.

Oh, and that cover only came on '87-'90 Renix models. If you're looking. They came out with an actual fuse box after that.

That mounting bracket might be for some accessory that wasn't installed. I have a base model. and there is all kind of empty brackets and plugs.

Crist Clapper

Consensus is that the unused bracket it not used... Most likely the same part is manufactured for other models that do use it.

I have a lead on a NOS cover... Stay tuned!

Looked in the '89 service manual. Shows that bracket just as it is. Nothing goes in it, and nowhere does it describe that any cover needs to be removed.

After asking him, and he didn't have any I thought to search for pics of things near it and coolant bottle worked. So, finally the pic of the elusive cover panel...

I just did a google search for "90 Cherokee coolant bottle" and looked through the images. Since I knew the coolant bottle was near that panel I figured I might get lucky and find one with the panel in the pic. :)

Should the un-connected wire be connected to something?

What is this tube/plug used for?

I don't recognize the connector, probably one of those things used only in models with equipped with certain options, or used in diagnostics.

The tube is a breather, most likely the front axle's by the location. The diffs can get hot and this lets air in and out per expansion.

The plug is probably for some option that wasn't installed. Like cruise control, A/C, Fog lights and stuff like that.
From the pics I seen your engine bay looks pretty clean.. Not too shabby for a vehicle over 20 Years old.

Quick explanation for all my questions (and more to come!)...

When I did a/the GW restoration... I removed all the trim/stuff before it was painted. For the XJ... I was in the process of removing all the trim/stuff when the painter had a cancellation. So since I didn't remove much... Thus all the questions.

So... I really need and appreciate all the help I can get!

And unlike the site(s) for FSJ's... I find the Cherokee/Wagoneer sites a bit immature until you folks. So... :thanx:

Anytime! Ya know, most of us here actually had the same experience on other sites and got fed up until we found this place. 2.5 years now and i solely come here, unless a search for info or something sends me elsewhere. And tony (mudderoy) started this place for the same reason. ;)

Connection (break) below the coolant-bottle with anti-freeze in-line.

Off to NAPA in the AM with my notes! (below)

Plan A: Unsuccessful. :hmmmm2:

Plan B: cruiser54 instructs... Near the blower motor, under the coolant reservoir, if you have CommandTrac is located a vacuum operated electrical switch to turn the PartTime light on in the dash. Mounts to the firewall and is blue in color, at least somewhat.

The best way is to read the tag on the back of the transfer case. It will have two numbers. The low range ratio of 2.71 and either a 231 or 242. Also if you have no front axle disconnect for your vintage of XJ, you will not have that vacuum switch. The vacuum switch is only used for the 231 tcase

Crist Clapper

I didn't get the opportunity to check this today. Can the same information be derived from my attached build-sheet? Thanks!
