I think most people on this website probably know this already, but for some who may not know it, this is an excellent way to start fires. I get some petroleum jelly,(vaseline) and melt it in a pan over low heat. Until it is liquid, then I just dip a cotton ball in it, and let the vaseline soak in for a second, then using pliers, I grab the other side of the cotton ball, and dip it in the vaseline until it soaks in completely. I let the excess drip off into the pan, and place the saturated cotton ball on a sheet of aluminum foil to harden and dry. I then store these in a ziploc bag. One is usually enough to start a fire with kindling.

Hmm, nice tip. I'm sure more than a few of the guys on here have some spare Vaseline laying around :D

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4 because my microwave couldn't do it

I do the same thing except I usually store them in old Altoid tins. Have a tin of them in my wilderness BOB, urban go, and my EDC. Never know when you need a quick way to catch something on fire :)

That seems like something a Kentucky woman would be prone to do. Just give it time hehe

Not going to lie, I've heard of this, but never tried it.. Not a bad idea to have, especially if you plan on camping while out on the trails for the weekend, or just out camping and enjoying the wilderness (if you have any of that available in your area)... Going to have to make and store some of these up for when I get back to camping... Any idea on how long they are good for, or is it pretty much like Vasoline in the first place and lasts darn near forever???

just a thought after watching an episode of ultimate survivor Alaska. One of the guys overturned his kayak and lost all his gear in the river. When he made it to shore, he still could not start a fire because he had no means to start a fire on him. after watching that, even though I carry more than one means to start a fire with me, I carry my fire steel around my neck now.

Or you can throw a bag or two of these in.... use them to start a fire and eat the rest.

Dynamite will fix anything :D
And it's the one and only thing that fixes stupid.
They say "you cant fix stupid" ...dynamite disagrees.
