New to xjtalk, liftgate issue

Brand new here, hoping for some help. I have a 2000 xj. Rear lift gate opens fine and latch handle releases ok. Problem is when I close it, I have to SLAM it really hard to get it to close and it makes a real loud metal-on-metal "THUNK". Any ideas? Do I just need to replace the latch assembly?

It might just be an adjustment. Have you taken the cover off and had a look?
