Not exactly 'new' tech, but very useful for routes for trails etc. in most cases I use Google maps, but also have the option of ViewRanger and MemoryMaps for overlay routes. Pretty straightforward fitting, but thought I'd share. :D

Another Viewranger user here. For about seven years now. Currently have it on my Note 3 and Nexus 7.

One of the features i like is Buddy Beacon. Transmits your location every X minutes, so you can (if you choose) be tracked online. Friend of mine turned that beacon API info into a useful website (at the time, Viewranger hadn't done anything useful with it).

Here's an track from when we were wheeling the Isle of Wight.

And a 2 day hike i did a while back.

I can see where that is really handy, especially with that city view on a tablet. I don't have a tablet, too big for my pocket :D But I too have found electronic mapping very beneficial. Out in the mountains here I use an app called Back Country Navigator.

As you can see, it uses topographic maps and is very good about showing roads and in the pic above, if you are used to reading them, it shows a road that degenerates into a trail. If you are looking for a challenging trail, those are the good ones. It will mark your path and you can insert waypoints and use the phone to take pics that will be linked to your waypoints if you wish

Yup. Have that too. On both devices. Both apps run topo maps, I just prefer Viewranger. (and i do contract work for them, but that doesn't cause a bias. Preferred it way before i got paid by them! :D )

Why the preference?

Buddy beacon, interface, ease of installing/creating GPX files, POI creation, Route searching/downloading. Compass overlay/3d compass overlay, etc.

The buddy beacon I can see, however given our current NSA over reach I am not sure about it. The rest is stuff I don't use. I am kind of old school about a lot of stuff. As long as the sun is shining I know general direction and time of day. When I worked out in the woods every day, I was uncommonly accurate with direction, down to a few degrees as well as time.
