OK finally got my re 3.5" lift installed and now its time for some new meats. This is going to be mostly a trail rig and maybe the 5 mile trip to work every now and again and date nights with the girlfriend so I was wondering if I am going to see a load of power loss on trails with 33s or if I should just go with 32s. I don't plan on regearing or anything as I plan on swapping out rear axles sometime this fall and feel it would be a waste of valuable part money at this point. Anyone have any experience on 33s offroad?

To be honest, 33s & 32s can be done on 3.5" of lift, but you will probably need to do some fender trimming. 31s would fit a lot better. You will notice the jeep straining more with either unless you regear, but many guys report no major problems. I'm going to be putting 33s on mine with stock gearing very soon, but it's not my daily driver. It can be done, but it's ultimately going to be up to you on how much you like it. It's one of those "you won't know until you try it" things.

That's what I thought. I've heard people have good experience with 33s and some can't stand it I want to do it cause I think the 33s jammed in there looks bad a$$ and it'll give my diffs that much more clearance. I trimmed the fenders up pretty good last summer cause I was running 31s on stock and sagged suspension and that RE kit netted me closer to 4.5" so I'm hoping it will be enough. I think ill just go for it and not look back. Thanks for the reply:beer:

I know of many folks that run 33's with the stock gearing, I did it for a few years with no real issues.. But If nothing else since you seem like you really want to run the 33's, then snag them up, and save up a bit over time to regear at a later date.. I would think if you clearanced your fenders enough to clear 31's stock, you might be fine running the 33's with the lift on there..

I started with 31's, clearance for diffs was just not enough when aired down. Now I have 33's stock gearing. Could I use a regear, yes, is it lacking on the trails? No. Climbing hills in freeway? A little. I cannot use 4wd high on the trails(lack of power), but who goes that fast anyways? I am a slow crawler not a lead foot...

What gearing did your jeep come with?

I am running stock 3.55 gears and 33s and loss of power hasn't been an issue. Still feels like there is plenty there when I step on it. I do live in a flat area so that might be why I haven't noticed it. However, braking is what has really changed since adding 33s. There has been what feels like a significant increase in stopping distance. So much so that I'm going to be looking into upgraded brake options soon.

My friend ran 33s on 10" wide wheels under a 3.5" lift. We had to trim the fenders and he was still grabbing the corners when rockcrawling. The gearing never seemed to be that much of an issue but braking was definitely affected, as was onroad mileage and power.

Since then we put another set of springs for 4.5" total lift and that seems to have solved the clearance issues. A related issue is what tire you will be using...the Swampers were 33s and they hit all of the time; when he switched to BFG ATs in 33s a lot of that went away. Not to mention a much-improved on highway feel.

Here's a pic of the BFGs with the 4.5 lift.

I'm getting the bfg mug terrain km2s hopefully ordering them today from desert rat. I'm not to concerned about highway performance as this is gonna be mostly a trail rig I just don't want to be climbing a hill out on a trail and not have that power to get up. Nothins worse than having big tires and not be able to make over simple obstacles

That shouldn't be an issue in low range. I use the lower gears whenever possible.

I am strongly thinking about the Cooper Discoverer STT or the ProComp Xtreme MT in a 33x12.5R15 on a black steel rim 15x8 or 15x10
does anybody have this setup>?

One thing is that Pro Comp tires tend to be a bit short of their stated size

Well bit the bullet and ordered me some 33 bfg mud terrain km2 should be here Friday. Got them in a wheel tire package from Desert Rat with 15x8 mountain crawler wheels(not sure what the brand is). Now if I could just get that POS leaf spring bolt out I'd be ready to go:bang:
