Okay I am really tired of fighting my NSS, so am going to do something about it. Now I am going to take it off and try to clean it, but I was told to have another one available in case mine comes off and comes apart. So my question is..............I found one on ebay, this will fit my 93 automatic correct??

also before you take it off you know that you can adjust it right i had the best luck when pushed all the way up just loosen the top bolt and push it up then tighten it up and give it a try its better if you have 2 people 1 in the truck and 1 under adjusting so as you adjust they can try to start it at the sane time

Thanks warrpath, I wrote down Dave's number and plan to give him a shout tomorrow

I did not know that, I will try adjusting it first and see how it works.

My NSS only fails sometimes, but it's a major pain when it does. I have found out that when the humidity rises (like it's doing), my NSS fails more often (like most everyday), rather than when the humidity is low, it only fails sometimes (like maybe once a week, or sometimes I can go a month or more with no problems)

Okay, here is another related question. I had reverse lights when I bought my Jeep, but when I started having problems with my NSS (about 2 years ago) I also lost my reverse lights at the same time. Now I know that my reverse lights are connected to the NSS as well, but when my NSS is working, shouldn't my reverse lights be working too??

You are going to have to remove the one you have anyway, try removing it, clean it and put it back in. I don't think it's a part that goes bad, just gets dirty.

I've read an article on how to clean one somewhere once.

Melissa

Ummm..............okay..........so........well.... ......now if my NSS is getting dirty, why is the himidity affecting it??

Anyways, my plan is to pull it off ( Kryptonitexj did post a link to cleaning one, and I did print it out ) but if it comes apart in pieces, then I am going to have to put a new one on. This is the reason I have put it off, I'm really afarid it will come come off in pieces, but I really am tired of it craping out on me, last fall when the humidity was pretty high the NSS quite working and my Jeep sat for a good month or more untill the humidity came back down, then it would finally start again, and of course I sort of conveniently forget these things untill they start happening again :shocker:

Here's the link
http://jeepin.com/features/nss/index.asp

So now that they are, I am going to do something about it, before it comes down to having it sit around because the NSS is being a pain in my a$$. :D

I'm sure I'll have questions, even with two different sets of directions :smiley-laughing021: I plan on getting to it first thing next week. I have my Diesel in the shop and when it gets home, I'll start on my jeep. This way I'll be sure to have a spare set of wheels when I break my own Jeep :rotfl2:

Well strike that, I guess I'll be starting on it tomorrow, wait no................ it's after midnight, I mean I'll have to work on it later this morning. I had my Jeep backed out off the pavement so that I could sweep and hose down the driveway, and now it won't start to allow me to get it back where it should be. I used to have a remote starter for it in case something like this happens, but of course I sort of fried the remote starter, so now with it not wanting to start and my diesel in the shop getting calipers, rotors and brakes, I have no choice but to work on it. So on that note, I'll let you all know what happens, wish me luck!!

Ok cosxjfan,

I loosened the top bolt, then pryed down the tabs on the lock washer, and removed the large nut, but the large nut was only finger tight...............good........or not good?

I have yet to actually get the NSS off cause I am having trouble getting to the two friggin zip ties, but I wanted to make sure I asked this question so I know what to do when I get to put it all back on, I do not want to mess this up

BlueXJ

As I recall that nut is not very tight or the NSS gets in a bind when it gets mud and debris between it and the housing. A very small set of sidecutters will help to get those tiewraps severed. There is a minimum of space to even get your hand in between the tranny and the tunnel. I have even had to lower the crossmember and slightly lower the tranny for one set of wires and the fastener to be free to give the slack required to slide the NSS off the shaft.
HTH

I think is is sexy. I think women can do anything they set their mind to. And that independance is a sexy thing to my mindset.

COSXJFAN

Yeah, Blue is right, the large nut needs not be too tight. Be careful with all of the little o-rings, they keep the muck out. Also, there are little tiny springs inside holding the contact wipers against the main distribution contact strips. Be careful, when you separate the unit, they can go bye bye, and I don't think they can be bought anywhere. I took mine apart, and let it soak in citrus degreaser, and everything cleaned up real easy. I assemble it all back with dielectric grease, and it has worked like a champ ever since.

I wasn't going to say anything, because I don't know Mel to well...yet!! So, since you brought it up, yeah, it's freakin HOT!! Women that work on their own stuff, and willing to get dirty, calm down boys, I mean oil and grease...oh wait, dang it!! Anyway, I dig it!! LOL!!:stars:

Yep it is one of the most attractive aspects of many women, that they are not afraid to get their hands dirty. Those that are willing to break out of their traditional female roles and do what many have been taught to shun for generations, because it was not "ladylike". That makes them no less of a lady but does elevate them in most mens eyes.

Hey MELISSA, wanted to wish all the good fortune on your rebuild of the NSS or your replacement part. I was very lucky to be able to rebuild mine recently. And my back-ups are much brighter now.

Here is a pic of the NSS apart, clean and all greased up

Here I have it all back to together

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww305/melreese83/Jeep/HPIM0904.jpg

Well I put it back on, got it plugged back in and my Jeep fired right up
:cheerleader::cheerleader::cheerleader:

BUT.................. While it will fire in park, it will not fire in neutral :(

I checked the other gears and no fire unless in park. I do have one reverse light on the drivers side, I'm thinking I might just need a bulb for the passenger side, shoot it been 2 years since I've had the use of either.

Do you think it's okay this way, or do I need to do something else???
Thoughts?? Suggestions??

I figured that was going to be the answer :rotfl2:

Which pieces do you want to see??

Going off of the two sets of directions I had, all the pieces were there and I put everything back the way it came apart, just cleaner :)

I have no problem pulling it back off, should be a alot easier then the first time, I just really don't want to have to crawl my butt back under there :smiley-scared002: :smiley-laughing021:

I had to take it back off anyways, I could not get my jeep to fire in neutral, only park. So I took it back off, opened it back up, made sure all the pieces were still there, closed it back up, put it back on, and I'll be dipped if it didn't start in neutral :mel:
