Alright so i installed a 4.0 i bought off craigslist into my 98 xj a couple weeks ago and since have been chasing the problem that it simply wont start. Everything (to my knowledge) is hooked up correctly. I have not reinstalled the drive belt or radiator yet though. But the motor is getting fuel and spark. When it cranks over it pops in the intake, so i assume the timing is off. SOOOO i went through the procedure of correcting the timing, turned the oil pump to the 10o'clock position (cyl 1 TDC) reinstalled the distributor with the rotor at the 5o'clock position and it seems to pop more than it did before. any suggestions on what my next step should be?? :bang:

I'd get in there with a timing light to check for timing accuracy. Also, is it giving you any check engine codes?

No codes are popping up. Would i be able to use a timing light by just cranking it since it wont start?

You should be able to. Now, one of the most common issues with these XJ's is the CPS going bad. Might see if a new one solves your problem

Well if it was the CPS i wouldnt be getting spark at all.

Have you tried spraying starter fluid in the intake? Might help narrow down your issue

I havent. Im going to check the compression tomorrow. after i do that ill spray some starting fluid in there. Maybe thatll help it fire at least once

yes, it will work fine that way, but you need to keep a sharp eye out. Mark the spot with white first

sounds like you're 180* off. From what I remember, you index the pump and dizzy to the same spot...
