Top is made from 4" cap and short pipe glued. Up inside is 2" cap with brass bolt sticking up through to hold topper. On 2" pipe inside topper is about 12 half inch holes for air flow of course.

Fairly easy project to do, getting hole through fender correctly can be the tricky part.

Not to shabby, I need to make one to go with me to the trail but I do not like them on all the time.

Hey bigbadxj, I under stand. If you look at 3rd pick down there is a rubber 90* elbow with hose clamps. It makes it easy to remove.

That's a pretty darn good lookin snorkel you got there. You know what, You could make some money on that mod. Grab all the pieces you need, throw em in a box and sell it as a "budget snorkel" and I'm sure it will get you some income ;)

I made one out of pvc for my TJ a couple years ago. It worked wonders and not a drop of water ever touched my filter again. I used 3" thought cuz 2" seemed to feel like my tj smoked ciggarettes it's entire life and couldn't breathe. You gotta make sure the filter box is completely sealed though. Sometimes there's a drain hole at the bottom that allows water to drain....and fill. I ran a gasket between the mating surface of the top and lower part of the air box too cuz water seeped in there (it warps from the heat).

But good job!

Could you add something explaining how and what to use to cut the two large holes? Snorkles are quite expensive and I can see how this would be a very useful and money saving mod.

Thank you everybody for the complements, And Tony, The holes through the fender were cut with a hole saw, slightly larger than outside of 90* elbow to allow pipe to lay flat on fender. I went at a slight angle to get below the inner fender bend where the hood sets. Bob........

I did the same thing to my old XJ but with the 2", I found that the intake was too restricted. Did you notice a difference on yours? On my new one I have run a 3" dryer hose from the back of the airbox into the cowl for the invisible snorkel look and with the 3" its much less restricted. Didn't notice a difference except for intake noise.

Yea i think I'm going to use my old filter box(got a cone in right now) and make a snorkel just like yours for the trails. Just got to figure out what to do about that big hole when it is not on?

Hey budgetxj,It doesn't appear to be restricted as far as I can tell. Mine is made of 2" pvc.Your hidden snorkel sounds like a cool idea.

Hey lowrider, I'll put together some pic's of topper so you can see how I did it.

Hey bigbadxj, I've been on the look out for a rubber plug for mine.I've been thinking the same thing,I'd like to not run with it at times.

As you can see at the 2nd pic the top of the 2" is capped, with a brass bolt through the top. It is held in place with a nut. There is multiple holes drilled for air of course. 1st pic is topper made from 4" cap and short piece of pipe glued together. Drill hole in center of cap, mount it with wing nut and its done.

Here's another idea for the cap. This is what I did on my TJ. I was gonna make some kind of cap like yours but ended up going this way cuz it's more free flowing:

Hi muddeprived, Very slick idea. I may redo mine like that. Even though mine seems to have plenty of flow. But your design ensures good flow..........

You'll get more flow than me cuz I used 3" pvc and had about 3/4" of space for air flow. It did it's job though and never sucked in any water. I had it right next against my windshield too.

Do you have any pics of the top of the snorkel? The cap set up you have? I read that you said you cut a bunch of half inch holes in it. I cant picture how though. Also what did you do about the rain/water coming in? I want to build one for my own XJ if that is coll with you. Its a great idea and Im sure alot cheaper then the $400 units you see out there for sale on the market. Thanks for the great Idea. Im with Mudddeprived, your onto something here. In this economy, its a good supplemental income.

Here's another way to mount a cap. I just did this on my snorkel a few months ago...

Make 90 degree brackets and just bolt them on the pvc and then use jb weld to mount them to the cap or use small bolts. I leave about 2" of space between the cap and end of pvc for plenty of air flow.
