Tool list? Just empty the roll away :D

Seriously though, I carry a full set of deep sockets in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drives and flex sockets with ratchets and extensions, Gear Wrenches, adjustable pliers, screwdrivers, pry bar and BFH. It all fits in an under the seat tool box. The trick is to organize all the sockets on racks, wrenches in a flexible roll up organizer. Also a full electrical repair box.

Maybe I shoulda asked ...

What size spanners and sockets, don't you take ?? .. :D :D

What I was thinking tho,

... was a comprehensive list of "needed", spanners & sockets ... so any XJ newchums would be able to fill out their toolbag a bit better.

I'm carrying way too much ... going by the 1/2" streching of the stitching, in the spanner bag - when I try to pick it up ... and am looking at thinning things down a bit.

So whats everybody reckon ... Just carry full sets,

Or mix and match an "XJ" set.

Phone number for a good towie sounds ideal ... but you yanks must be spoilt - if your mobiles work any further than - 10 mile outta town, away from main population areas..

Personally ... I'm almost thinking a minimalist approach consisting of a ... small and large leatherman, 10gal of petrol and a cigarette lighter .. :D

If I had to cut it down, then a set of gear wrenches. They have ratchets in the box end. I don't know if they are available down under. Flat and phillips screwdrivers. Adjustable pliers and I have some good adjustable wrenches. And of course hammer and pry bar. I have just about eliminated all the torx crap on mine

Wish it had been a full set .. :D:D

Expensive little suckers down here at tool stores tho.

Unfortunately, I don't have a "set" to carry with me. I have a few random spare tools that stay in the back of the Jeep. They consist of some screwdrivers, pliers, electrical tape, random spanners of unknown sizes, channel locks, crow bar, 3 pound sledge, and a jump box. I need to get an actual "set" to carry with me. Luckily, if I'm at work I'm at a dealership and I can easily run to the service department to borrow tools from a tech willing to do so. I had to do that when I replaced my starter at work. Was also lucky that I just had the (BMW) dealership order the starter and it was delivered within an hour at a discounted rate ;) Other than that if I'm wheeling, Matt and BigJim are pretty much always there and they have hardware stores in the backs of their Jeeps :D

Sounds pretty much like my hodgepodge of stuff.

We might have different ideas about ... flexible roll up spanner organisers tho .. :D:D

Thinned out the tool bags this morning.

OpenEnd/Ring, Spanners got thinned down to,

... 1/4" up to 7/8" ... and
... 6mm up to 21mm.

With no extras of the same size.

All the metric and imperial, double ended, open enders - got tossed in the spanner box on the bench ... Watch me regret that decision on the next trip to the mall .. .. :D

Sockets I left alone ... theres only a coupla sizes that arent useful but they may as well all stay together. Basically covers the same sizes as the spanners.

Deep sockets are handy ... but normal ones fit better in some spots.

... and after I tried to thin it all down ... I now have a shopping list of extras I want .... :D:D

A gimbal head, 3/8drive ratchet and some extra 1/4drive extensions are at the top of the list,
... that damned crank sensor is about due to start playing up again soon - I would imagine .. :D

... and I still have an abundance of torx screws holding the grocery getter together .. :D

... and since bfh's and stuff got mentioned as well ...

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n629/carves-oz/Tools%20and%20Test/100_4681b_zps599baf72.jpg

The goddawful shifting spanners - are only there in the hope, I wont need to get the spanner bag out .. :D:D

Coupla heavy screwdrivers/pry bars ... thankfully, those tricky canadians solved my space wasting, screwdriver collection issues, about 30yrs ago - with their PicQuic screwdrivers.

... and theres a few handy pliers and stuff.

Keep in mind this is only what I want to carry on regular basis for any, "common", roadside repairs on the way to the mall ... as I'll chuck a bit more in the bags for bush campouts and extended trips.

... so feel free to critique away .. especially if it will help others in choosing what to cart around ..

Your big fat flat head screw driver that you only really use to pry with is missing ;)

My other question is if you are on the trail and you blow a line some where are you going to have another line to replace it with... Also some times they can be tricky so make sure if you do!!! Add your penetrating petroleum product when you plan on using those line discos oh wait... You don't deal with rust to much do you lol!!!

:smiley-laughing021: ... only when I run .. ;);)

The 18" one thats there is enough for most things ... in my case.
If I"m "off road" ... theres normally a set of tyre levers or something, under the seat, for those "special" moments .. :D

My other question is if you are on the trail and you blow a line some where are you going to have another line to replace it with............

Theres a bit of stuff I carry to ensure that the "professionals" ... can do their job .. ;);)

Things like the QD's, front wheel hub socket and a thumbdrive parts and FSM are more for them - than me.

Typically ... if things go really pear shaped - on a 2hr run to mall ... then I can expect,
a 3hr wait for a tilt tray,
ummm no I cant work on it till tomorrow ... at the mechanics,
2day minimum wait for overpriced parts,
... and wasted money laid up in motels.

... just coz I wanted 20lb of spuds and an esky full of steaks and sausages .. :D

... So I dont need some dozy, jeep hating, ford fanatic, spanner spinner in a shop ... also telling me that he burred up the front hub nut ... using an, inch and a half, socket .. :D:D

Which is why the expense of my fitting complete, new, diffs recently ... was not an overkill or show pony exercise ... as it should ensure, long term, DD, reliability ... of those parts.

Good point on WD40 etc ... Definitely a handy "tool" that complements spanners and sockets ... and I carry an equivalent.

Rusty fasteners are generally a minor concern down here, except on older, neglected vehicles ... or newer ones, stupidly used as beach buggies.

Threads sorta getting a bit sidetracked too tho ... Its not all about "my", motley collection of spanners and sockets - but also what everybody else has a preference for carrying.

I was originally thinking that everybodies input on little things like,

- which nuts require a deep socket - instead of a standard length one,
- Which ones definitely, require the use of a top quality spanner/socket instead of a cheapy.
- which ones are better suited to use a ratchet and extension on - instead of spanners ... yada yada

.... might be handy, general info for all.

One thing I've been trying to do is note what fasteners need what tools... May be a good idea to narrow down the items that are more urgent to have, or just save some time.

That's a good idea, Jake. I've written down a list of what oil filters to buy for my vehicles. Cuts down on time sorting through the little book at the parts store. I never thought to keep a log of bolt sizes and such.

Here is my electrical box that goes wheeling with me. Half my Jeep has been rewired in some fashion, so I bring the works.
