This is not a product review, but I just wanted to tell about my experience at discount tire down in Las Vegas. My wife and I flew out of Las Vegas on a trip for a couple of weeks. And we left my van at a friends business on Tropicana.
When we returned one of the tires was flat. So I put the spare on, my wife was in such a hurry to get back home that she wanted to leave at once without getting the flat tire repaired. But I didn't want to travel 450 miles without a spare tire. So I drove down a few blocks to Discount Tire, and asked them to take a look at my flat and to repair it if possible. They broke the tire down, and said it had an old patch on the inside that had come loose, so they buffed the area and put a new patch on, then they installed a new valve stem, aired it up and put it back in place under the rear of the van, then I asked them if they would check the lug nuts on the wheel I had changed, which they did, then they checked the air pressure on the other 3 tires. When I tried to pay them they said that they did not charge for fixing flat tires. I explained that I hadn't bought the tires from them, but they said it didn't matter!
So when we were about 5 miles from home another tire went flat, I had picked up a screw in the tire. So I was very glad that I had my spare tire repaired in Las Vegas, and with the great service from Discount Tire, I will certainly be buying my tires from them, from now on.

My wife had a similar experience at the discount tire in Concord NC. She was at the mall when she returned to her car the tire was flat. She walked across the parking lot to D.T. They walked to the car fixed her tire and the spare that went flat over time. all for free.. Now they get my business too.

I've talked to lots of folks that have used DT, and have been to their locations in different states.. unfortunately we don't have one within at least 250 miles away from my location..

Yep, so far we've had good experience with them. Their Beaumont location gave my brother a great price on his 31s... although we do buy tires for our work trucks there so that may be why. But i wouldn't hesitate, although not all their locations can fit our dually for an alignment, but not too big a deal.

yup i work at discount tire down in conroe, been there for about a year. We fix all flats if they are fixable for free, check all air, and tighten all lug nuts FREE. I usually work 12 hrs straight when i work and man mondays are killer, i usually do around 50-60 flat repairs by myself in a day. Lots of free labor there. Alot of customers who get their flats fixed for free give tips to the guy that fixed it so i like that lol :D

haha,I didn't think to tip a tire guy either until i started getting them. Most people don't watch what we do. most of our tips come from the more harder jobs people want us to do to their tires. I usually always get tipped if a vette comes in and the customer watches what i have to do to change his tires, they are an absolute pain.
I hate the huge lifted trucks that come in wanting 37's, one tire weighs more than i do and ive never been tipped from a guy with a huge lifted truck. And they always get mad that it took me 40 minutes to install 4 new tires. its a frustrating job sometimes.

I don't like the idea of tipping. Unless I get great service above and beyond what is normal. But when a tire guy repairs a flat tire for free, I think that certainly should be a reason for a nice tip. But so many people have come to expect tips, just for doing their jobs.
That really irritates me. I don't like it that restaurants barely compensate waiters and that they depend on tips. I do give them tips also, but if they give bad service I reduce the amount. Why do some professions get tips, and others don't. I'm a trucker and sometimes the customer I deliver to screws up and doesn't order soon enough, but they expect me to bust my ass, driving day and night to deliver it to them in time, I used to do it for them, without ever getting a tip or even a thank you. But not anymore, well enough of my ranting. I guess every job has good and bad things about it.

I don't ever expect a tip and i always turn the tip down, if they demand i take it i say thanks but i don't expect it, i am getting paid. all i was saying is it feels nice to get noticed sometimes.

I never rush anyone that's preparing my food or working on something that's mine (car, home, setting broken bones etc. etc.)
I want it done right, take as much time as you need just do the best job you can.
That's the NickyG philosophy. That and eat more filet-o-fish.

I couldn't agree more. Talked to a waitress one time at a more expensive restaurant and they only paid her $2.?? an hour... expecting the customers to fork over to pay their employees. Its not right for the customer to be expected to pay that... nor is it fair to the employee. If someone's cheap on the tip they don't get paid?!?! Or a slow day?!?! Come on! Companies just trying to save money by cheating their employees. I usually tip pretty good... service and check amount fluctuates it of course but not everybody does and to have to rely on that just isn't right.

One thing i do is when someone gives me say a free drink, desert, whatever i add that amount to the tip.

And what's up with to-go orders at restaurants wanting tips... the kid at McDonalds doesn't get one and he does the same thing.

Bob, we worked hotshot and i know exactly what you mean.

Yeah, several professions don't need tipping like people who cut hair. I paid for the haircut, they get a decent wage (comparatively to food servers), and I don't like tipping for it, but I do because my wife makes me :D. Or masseuses (the normal kind, not the kind Carves likes), Or any regular place that puts a "Tip Jar" out. They're getting their normal pay, so I don't like it unless they go way above and beyond.

Food servers are paid on average $2.13/hr. I've been there and done that. On top of that, servers have to tip out to the bar tenders whether their tables ordered drinks or not, they have to tip out to bus boys, dishwashers, silverware rollers, and sometimes even to the hostesses. I'm sorry, but all those people get paid more hourly than the servers do for the exact job they perform, and the servers are getting their tips based on making customers happy. Why should they have to pay those people a percentage of their hard earned tips??? Restaurants are pretty much the definition of socialism. You have to pay a huge chunk of what you earn to other people that get paid more per hour and didn't provide excellent customer service. Wrong, wrong wrong. I hated being a waiter and refuse to ever do it again. That being said, I don't worry a great deal about calculating 15% or 25% when I tip servers. I tip based on how well they did. Is my cup refilled in a timely manner, are they attentive, etc. I don't like the waiters that I only see when I order and when I pay, and they usually get low tips. Agreed that To-Go people don't need to be tipped a large amount. However, they are usually paid $2.13/hr too, but all they are doing is punching in your order and giving it to you when you get there instead of attending your table for an hour. I usually tip about $2 on those.

I also used to work in a shop and got tips from time to time for fixing flats for free, checking air in tires, checking oil levels, etc. I also would try to say "no thanks, it's my pleasure" but most wouldn't take no for an answer. That's fine and dandy and I don't mind tipping those people either. Especially if I have a rather difficult vehicle to work on. People like Mr. Metlik53 absolutely deserve tips for what they do. C'mon, a free flat repair? Throw a little extra to the guy/gal that took the time to help ya out while not expecting anything in return :D

Now, back to the original topic of this post LOL! I really like Discount Tire's policy and their customer service. If you have a bad experience at a DT location, it's totally the fault of the employee(s) and not the company. The company is one of the few that believes in providing excellent customer service.
