Since the HT is my only radio at the moment I decided to make a mount for it in the XJ.

The notch is for the belt clip. I put side bolsters and a bottom on it so the belt clip doesn't have to do all the work.

Looks like a good idea and design... What kind of reception does it get with that ant. inside your XJ?? Have you thought of doing an external ant, to hook up to it when it's in the Jeep??

Reception in the Jeep isn't that bad, transmit may be a different story....haven't tried it. I am not going to mess with an external antenna for it. I thought about it but didn't want to mess with unscrewing it when I took it inside or put it away when going in a store for a long period of time. I take the radio in the house most nights to check into and listen to various nets.

Oh and it will eventually get painted black.

well I was thinking there was probably a coax connector/adapter that would allow you to slip it on and off, so that it would be like a quick release setup.. But I get what you are saying

I don't know about quick release, I would still have to unscrew any connector/adapter to put the rubber duck antenna back on it to use it at home. Hoping with tax return this year I can get a dual bander with remote head.

Decent sheet metal skills there man!
That thing needs a good once over with a wire wheel though, and maybe a coat of paint or something. OH!!....anodized would be SWEET!

Do they make anything that is thick and rubbery that you could dip that in? I just think of the damage to someone's face/head/arm if they hit it during an accident.

Yep, there is a plasti-dip type product that I thought about using.
My dad use to have some years ago that he put rubber grips on his tools with.

It would make the edges softer too, give it a more professional manufactured look.

Made some final adjustments, cleaned it up, painted it, and repositioned it.
