Forgive me if this subject has already been asked but here it is.
I just put a rebuilt engine in my TJ, 2500mi. on it now, and now I have no heat inside the cab. It has a new thermostat and water pump. It was sitting everything disconnected without engine for maybe a month, (not sure if that could contribute to anything). I am pretty sure I have coolant being pumped through heater hose, but not sure. I am wondering if it could be the dash controls that are the problem not the coolant? I can switch from different outlets, e.g. floor, windshield, etc. but "nothing" from cold to hot. Anyone have experience testing the cold/hot switch, "how to", testing, fixing,....?

This might be a stupid question, but have you checked the level of coolant in the radiator? When they get down a little you will loose coolant circulation in the core

Feel both hoses going into the heater core. Are they both hot? In my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to flush the heater core or the whole system just to eliminate that from the list of probable cause.

Once you flush it be prepared for a leak. You may wind up having to replace the heater core.

I guess some one needs to ask that question, but yes there is plenty of coolant in the system, both heater hoses are hot. Strangely enough when i started it up yesterday with the heat already on, open to the front and fan on low warm air was blowing out??? I tried to recreate that this morning with non luck. Im still thinking it could be the dash control, not sure what type mine is, how it open and closes the heat valve.
Here is a strange thing off subject. I have reset my password to this site 3 time and i keep getting rejected like it will only work one time?

One more question. When you operate the selector to heat, AC etc where does the air come out. Defrost vents?

I can still select where the air comes out, i just dont get any heat. Its 2 separate controls on mine, im only assuming on yours also.

OK, I think the problem is the blend door. It is mechanically operated by the nob on the dash. If I was going to chase this down, I would start with removing the covering and accessing the controls and following it from there. Not sure on yours, but on mine the blend door is in the center right in front of the console. You can probably see where the cable attaches on one side or the other

I pulled my dash apart as much as I was comfortable with and I pulled the switches both the heat control and the selector knob out. None of mine are cable operated or mechanical my selector knob as a bunch of vacuum lines running to it and my heat control is electric. I wven tried looking at the wiring diagram but that's all just hieroglyphics. I did check all the fuses to see if maybe something was blown there and everything is fine with the fuses so the only thing I can think of at this point is the heat switch is bad and I don't know how to test that or the heater core is plugged.

You can check the heater core by disconnecting the lines and shoving a hose to one and see if you get water out the other

Ive got a flush kit adapter on one of the heater hoses and have considered clamping off the radiator side, hooking a garden hose on it a trying to flush it that way?

Im thinking as long as i keep the radiator cap off i shouldn't blow the heater coil out.

Well, really I think you should just disconnect those hoses. When was the last time you changed fluid anyway? If you loose a little at the top, not a biggie

At the time of my engine rebuild about 8 months ago.

You still won't loose more than a quart of fluid, which if you want you could recover first
