I went back to my friends at RoundEyes.com (http://roundeyes.com/) this time to upgrade the yellow dim dome light in my Jeep XJ.

They sell a LED light replacement they call "Jeep Interior LED Lighting Kit" (http://www.roundeyes.com/Jeep_LED_Interior_Light-Jeep_Interior_LED_Lighting_Kit_4.html)

The "kit" they sell comes with five adapters, I assume to fit most if not all automotive bulbs.

Well out of the five that I had none were are direct replacement for my dome light bulb.

In this picture you can see 4 of the 5 adapters. The bulb to the far right is the original incandescent bulb.
Looking closely in the red circles you can see there is a piece of wire on each end in a squared configuration.
This is used to "hook" the bulb onto the connectors in the dome light housing. The adapter I selected, same
size as this bulb does NOT have these pieces of wires. Only pointy ends that will fit between the two connectors
in the dome light housing.

You can see the original incandescent dome light here still installed. You can see how the bulb installed around the contacts.

It is a little blurry, but I think you can see how I have the adapter "wedged" in between the contacts.
This is installed in a lifted 32" tired 4x4. This isn't going to stay in place. I will be removing the adapter
and soldering wires to each end so I can duplicate the connection points of the original dome light.

Here are two shots, one before and one after. You just don't realize how yellow that light is until you see a white light. Remember the camera
automatically adjusts light levels, so you cannot tell the difference in brightness here.

This picture shows the dome light and driver's and passenger side spot, or map lights. Wow! yellow!

My wife's digital camera allows me to select shutter speed, exposure, etc... so tonight I'll take a few shots to give you a realistic view of what this LED light looks like.

I'll have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I first hooked it up. I guess I was expecting something really brighter. Also the white light just looked weird. I asked my wife to come to the garage and have a look. She loved it!

In fact she didn't like the way I had the LED light mounted in the housing so she ran in the house and gathered up some of her "craft" stuff and we were able to get the LED array closer to the plastic cover, which made the light in the cab brighter and spread it over a larger area than it did the way I had it mounted. Women!

I thought it was strange that after my wife said she liked it, the light started looking better, then it dawned on me. I was BLIND from installing it! My vision was slowing coming back so naturally the light I saw in the interior was looking better and better.

Would I buy another one? I have to. I have a dome light in the cargo area of the XJ that now just looks plane sad!

It would be nice to replace both dome lights, the map lights, and the two courtesy lights mounted under the dash, however it would cost approximately $210!!!

I'm doing the two dome lights and then I'm done for awhile. I still want to buy a few more red rock crawling lights. LEDs are really neat!

Really cool set Tony. I like it. Yes, LED's can be pretty costly. I suppose if one would do a couple here, then latter a couple more, it would take the sting out of the pocket book. That can be kind of tough, I have a tendency to want to do it all at one. Not always good.

Well it is cheaper in shipping. lol.

I have $180 of red LED rock crawling lights on it now!!! What a waste of money, but it does look cool. I want at least two more for the rear.

how do you change the lights in the dash to LED? if you do that, im assuming you can no longer dim them with the headlight knob?

I haven't done that yet. I know they make direct replacements. I think the LED will dim but the range of voltage that they change may be very narrow, effectively dimming probably wouldn't work.

I did an LED light in the dome light of my old car.. and loved it.. was thinking about doing it on XJ a few months back.. def. would rather have the white light over the faded yellow look!!

Faded yellow is only good on pirate's teeth and when panning for gold in a stream!

:D:D

Replacing worn out 12 & 13 yr old filament bulbs also helps brighten up the courtesy lights ... but I think the XJ wiring struggles with the number of bulbs that light up ... In fact, I think hicksville here - has less street lights, than my XJs interior lights ... :D

Thumbs up for the LEDs tho .... maybe they will get cheaper as the "novelty" of them wears off ??

I put some awesome LED's in my under dash lights.. So I think I will have to look into this mod, so that I can get the matching color, and brightness of my dome lights..

what bulbs are the side map lights?
I see the big bulb is the festoon style
are the other two(sides) 194 type bulbs?
just curious

It's been so long I don't remember. When I get time I'll have a look at the guide at superbrightleds.com and let you know.
