It's like the first time everytime, I have been watching baby calves being born most of my life, but it just never gets old, It always feels just like christmas morning when you see a brand new baby calf.

Of course it makes it even better, when it's your favorite cow, and she has the color of baby you have been waiting years for :cheerleader:

Meet little Mia, she was born late last night or early this morning. Of course her momma was supposed to have had her months ago, but Mia was well worth waiting for, I have been hoping for a red calf from this cow for 6 years and now I finally have her.

Typical woman. Mentions the mother and the baby but nothing about the father. You know there's a fair amount of effort from the fella getting that whole process started! :smiley-laughing021:

LOL figured you would get a kick out of that lol...

How are your cows tempers? I used to lend a hand for a friend that had Watusi's and while in the bed of the truck throwing feed out one of them stuck their horn through the bed.

Never went to feed them again after that lol

My cows all have very good temperments, they have to, my kids like to play out in the pasture, you can even get between them and their babies without risking death :rotfl2:

Most of them, including my bull will eat out of your hands and likes to get a good scratch between the eyes.

Looks like he dun good. He needs an extra helping of feed just to keep his strength up so he can continue to perform at such a high level of proficiency.

Hombre is the ruler of all out in the pasture, he is a very happy boy, all he has to do is eat, sleep and pick a girl when he choses to. Oh and he does get extra helpings of treats now that he helped produce the baby I have been waiting for :)

The pic I posted of him, was taken three years ago when he was still pretty much a baby himself, he is now 6 and I think he looks very content out with his ladies, don't you think?

Don't mean to hijack, but since we're on the topic of age... what is the typical life expectancy for a cow? And does it vary from the types of cows that you own versus other types of cows?

Hijack away, your on my favorite subject :shocker::D

I really don't know the life expectancy of other breeds of cows, because most normal people rotate out their cows after they reach 6-8 years of age and are considered "broken Mouth" or "Smooth Mouth" cows, and rotate in replacement cows that are 15 months ( breeding age ). It does all vary, like everything else cows are being geneticaly altered to be bigger, beefier, no horns, more horns, better milkers and so on. There is no telling just how long other breeds will live, if given the chance.

I'm doing the same thing in my breeding program, I am after more body, and better milk producers, rather than horn size. As far I know Longhorns will out live any other breed of cattle, and I do know that they are the hardiest breed of all cattle, with the Hereford comming in close behind.

Of course I am not normal and I keep my cows as long as possible, and hope they can continue to maintain their health and weight. Longhorns can live to about 30 years of age, but I have never had one live that long.

This is Flag at 28 years old, she died two years ago

This is Lady Belle at 26 years old, she died last year.

This is Connie, she is currently the oldest cow I have at 20 years old, her momma is Flag ( first picture )

This is why I lose money, I get so attached to my girls, that I just can't sell most of them. Both the first two cows stopped calving years before, but I still could not just dispose of them, their are like family. I make a really bad rancher when it comes to cows, I guess it's more like a darn expensive hobby :rotfl2:

I am ignorant when it comes to most other breeds of cattle, but I could go on and on about the Longhorn breed. :smiley-scared002:

How old is Hombre? He would seem to be your limiting factor, as far as herd size increase goes.

As for size, I'm not going for taller, only more bulk. Hombre is now 6 years old, and yes he is limiting, he has been with the cows for two years and thats the max you want to keep a bull. Hombre is being rotated out and headed for Idaho. I have not found a bull that I want to buy as a replacement, so I have decided to A.I. all the cows to one of these three bulls that I have straws of semen from and keep a bull calf as my replacement bull.

Are your three choices close to you? As for size above I was refering to numbers of cattle not size or even bulk.

Yup all three of them boys are frozen out in my Nitrogen tank along with 6 others. I even have seed from a bull thats been dead since 1996 :shocker:

I like the number of cows that I have now, I really don't think I'll let my herd grow to very many more head. Yea right, ask me next year, I'll probably be up to 50 and cussing myself :rotfl2:
