I don't know if this is where I should ask this or not. But anyway, I bought a set of used Mickey Thompson wheels and tires from this guy. They are black wheels and I thought they came from the factory that way, but the Mickey Thompson guys were here during Jeep Week, and they told me that they didn't make black wheels back then, so these were just painted. Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the black paint without damaging the aluminum. Thanks

A toluene based paint remover should do the trick. Shouldn't hurt the aluminum finish at all

I wish I could remember the name of the stuff I used, but I used a stripper on my Trans Am wheels and it worked beautifully. I bought it at a local automotive paint shop

I wish you could remember too, but I will try Steves suggestion.

Heck if nothing else, shoot MT a message or give em a call, and tell em what you got, and that you'd like to strip em down, and ask what they'd suggest you use...

Well, I finally got around to stripping the black paint off the wheels, what a messy job. But I think they look much better now with my black xj.

The local hardware store only had one kind of paint remover, a sort of thick gel. But the can said it was safe for aluminum, so I used it, and an ice scraper to get most of it off. Then I went over it with a stiff brush. Finally cleaned it up with mineral spirits. And washed and dried the wheels. I will polish them when I get new tires in a few months.

Great result! Looks like the key paint remover was elbow grease!

Nicely done!
I agree with everyone else here....a definite improvement!
(why would anyone PAINT those wheels is beyond me)
So how much time did you have into the transformation?

You sure got that right, even with the paint remover, it took a lot of elbow grease.

Josh, You know when I bought that set of wheels and tires, I thought they were powder coated black. So, dummy that I am, I couldn't find a fifth one for a spare tire, so I ordered a new black powder coated wheel. So now I have a black powder coated spare. And I don't think I can remove the black from that wheel. If anyone knows how please let me know. I think I spent about 6 hours on that little job.

Do you think it would look better with the grill black? I am not sure, I thought it might be too much black again, but you are probably right.

The 6 hours was definitely worth it by the looks of it... there is no such thing as too much black lol, but that is just my humble opinion

Naw, just messing with you. Part of the chrome doesn't belong on a Jeep thing. ;)

My spare is a M/T and it is gloss black, I am not familiar with the ultra 164, I will try to find out what they look like.

Yeah I think it looks far better... I think someone probably painted them because they liked the Black rock krawler style rims and already had these or got a good deal on them so the painted them black.... or they just didn't feel like polishing them anymore.. so they painted them black!! I thought a few times of having mine powder coated black... But then again I'm not a huge fan of polished style rims either..

Seeing Bob's XJ up close, the wheels and subtle chrome grill give it a really unique look.

I like my XJ as a "full black" until its time for a full color change, but Bob's XJ stands out with that unique look, like the old "Tuxedo Park" CJ-5's...

"hmm, nice black XJ..."
And then you notice the long arm suspension and 8.8, and its not just simply for looks...

I just bought the wheels and tires because I got a pretty good deal on them, but I never cared for the black wheels. But I guess black wheels are in style now, which I could care less about.
